You don't look at the decor , you look at what you could do with it, it's possibilities, taking into account such things as the size of the room.
Unfortunately, today, lack of imagination is the norm. I think the Internet is part of this problem.
Particularly young people can’t “look at the bones”. They want IKEA all finished.
Right. I've watched too many episodes of househunters where they will say I love the house but the color in the small bedroom is wrong. Seriously, ever heard of paint?
I worked in property doing viewings. Most people cannot see past decor AT ALL. You have to paint a picture for them.
Never seen such a lazy real estate agent letting 80 year old sell her own home. Betty deserved any commission. New estate agent would have been in order for me..
Estate agents don’t earn a penny until your keys are handed over to the buyer. The agent would have done the viewings IF the vendors actually allowed it. The fact that they took 16 months to bring the price down by only £13k shows how difficult the vendors were. The price should have been coming down 6 weeks after they went on the market not 16 months!
Viewings aren’t the only job of an estate agent either, there are million other things we do after you’ve found a buyer, and if it all falls through we could have spent days, weeks, months of working on your house and you get to walk away and not pay a penny.
And to add to that it’s not just your house in the chain we’re dealing with, we could have been dealing with 10 other families on that chain, messaging at all hours, telephone calls whilst we’re out with our families and the stress of hearing about your divorces, illnesses, and taking all of your problems on for months on end.
You seriously have no idea. This is why the rate of depression and burnout is so high in estate agency.
This was filmed in 2008, it wouldn't last 92 minutes on the market today!
I think your wrong there. People can't afford to buy at moment . .cos of the prices . I'm in London , all the roads and my road ,loads of houses up for sale , just not selling. One round corner just sold end of terrace
Bin on market before COVID. Sold for over £526.000
3 years ago, it would. Not now, interest rates are through the roof and because of that nobody is buying.
Yep! And sadly it would go straight to a multi-property owning landlord who would charge an obscene amount to rent it out!
She so rude there older couple is I. Need to be do hard own them she work own people skills very bad😊
@LyraDavis oi that's me you're talking about! Its not our fault you're all broke because you don't know how to manage your money or invest
The constant reference to the nonexistent shagpile carpets is so irritating. Plus if the presenter can’t tell the difference between orange and yellow, I wouldn’t want her to decorate my house.
Just a small note: that is not blue shag carpet; it is sculptured carpet which predates shag.
I just love Betty so much. Wish I had a grandmother like her.
I noticed that.Sometimes the ignorance is because they are young and so unfamiliar with older things and styles. I'm with you on Betty, wasn't she a sweetheart.
She’s obviously never seen a shag carpet. A few of her comments showed a lack of knowledge but she certainly doesn’t lack confidence!
That agent is a disgrace to her industry.
I tried to get rid of an estate agent due to them being useless. They tried to sting me for £1,000 in 'advertising fees'. They were definitely robbers and a disgrace to their industry! Their one 'sales tactic' seemed to knock another £5,000 off of the asking price of £105,000 every 3 months. It took nearly 3 years to sell.
@@geoffas poor you what an ordeal .... hope things are better these days for you
@@elizabethforsyth3054 It was more than 20 years ago and the estate agent's behaviour still annoys me when I, very, occasionally think about it. The estate agent went out of business during covid, bit I'm still around ;-)
The presenter is really up herself. So rude
This show need a new host. I wouldn’t want her looking through my house..
I just love this grandma. 💖 seems like a very nice couple. 😊
Betty is wonderful what a lovely lady. I do hope they managed to sell and move to nearer to their daughter.
Can only imagine what a nightmare the unseen rooms remain. Kitchen? Bathroom? No wonder it hasn't sold. They are the crucial rooms when it coes to selling the house. Anyone with a grain of sense can see past clutter and surface decor, but kitchens and bathrooms usually set the £££ signs rolling in people's minds.
Not necessarily. I have known people rip out new bathrooms because it wasn't to their taste. They would be better off adjusting the price.
Why are they still using that same estate agent?!...
Usually estate agents get sellers to sign a contract that lasts for months, and if they go with a different agent they'll still have to pay a fee to the first agent in addition to the fee to the second agent who actually sells it
I would hope that a TV show like this could find them a way out of the contract, but I assume as they stuck with that agent they couldn't or weren't willing to try!
Sometimes elderly don't know different if told to show their home they will...un I would change agents..
I went to see a flat with gdn walking towards door saw wheelie bins so I'm thinking gdn round corner.. I said let's see gdn ..😂😂😂the bins were the gdn 😂upto flat the whole lounge floor had caved in 😮be careful he said so as not to fall down 😂😂😂
The agent probably wanted them off their books. They wouldn’t allow accompanied viewings, wouldn’t lower their price and were taking up valuable time and resources.
The Best thing about this episode is.. How Betty and Ron hold hands when they go outside Awe precious, the secret to a happy loving relationship. regarding the show.. people need vision. a makeover is great, it's uplifting and refreshing but the shades used in this episode are boring and bland. variety is the spice of life and makes a house a home.
I think this presenter is really rude! People are buying the building NOT the contents!!!!!! Buying put their own mark on the house when they buy regardless of the inside. I think the problem is the lazy agents.
I have toured a home where the homeowner was present with her family ready for enjoy their coffee. She was also a realtor. Felt so awkward after a few minutes with our realtor we wanted to step outside to discuss the pros and cons. Our realtor said that it usually doesn't work well when the homeowner is present.
It's the property for sale not the contents , look past the contents use your imagination they are elderly.
No sign of the kitchen or bathroom, which if they are in keeping with the rest of the house will take some serious money and time to sort out. Just showing three rooms where the entire strategy amounts to “clear the crap, change the carpet and paint it cream”. How do they get a tv program out of this 😂
Surface wiring and heating pipework, old kitchen, questionable brickwork above the window at the back, messy neighbours.
Do people really reject a house due to a bit of carpet or spotty wallpaper??
You can fix up a house but are stuck with difficult neighbors. Next door is the reason this house is unsaleable
We all know it’s the s,,t hole next door lol so just make a reasonable offer
I suspect the problem isn't that people can't see past the interior. I think it's that potential buyers don't like the interior and it would take too much time and money to make it more to their liking. There is just too much to fix.
Also when you're viewing a place you don't want to have to do with the owner. All the personal clutter is bad enough and Betty doing her hospitable teas etc is seriously preventing future buyers from imagining the home as their own.
Honestly, despite what these shows tell you, when it came to property hunting I could care less about the current decor and entirely ignored the furnishings that would be leaving. I was very driven by price, location and the things about the place that aren't going to change - like room size, amount and size of windows, etc. We were also very clear we'd be buying a brick or stone built house, not one of the new builds with flimsy construction. Don't let a bit of carpet or wallpaper put you off the right house, in the big picture it's very minor issues.
And guy next door with the mess garden is totally blagging it. It's the way he keeps saying yeah, he's used to placating people when he doesn't do stuff. Then he says in a week, then says two... something like that, then trails off vaguely. I bet that never happened. They didn't mention it in the four week later update.
I have bought and sold many houses over the years and got some great bargains because so many people can't see beyond the terrible furnishings, clutter etc. They have no imagination and so you and I get the bargains. x
I don't know why people hire real estate agents. I sold my home my self. I met with the buyer. She went to the bank to apply for a loan, etc. These real estate agents talk a big talk just like car dealers. They make you feel like you can never do anything yourself, that you need their "expert assistance". BS!
You're not wrong. Experimented with an EA who took pics etc. Had two viewings that I'd actually found MYSELF, did the viewings myself and realised that I could have saved a heap of money just using Strike (or similar), letting them stick it on right move etc and just doing the viewings and calls myself. Didn't make that mistake again!
Generally sellers don’t need a real estate agent but it’s a good idea for a buyer to
@@dittohead7044 It depends on your house. If it's a fairly standard property in good condition all round then it could be easy to do the work yourself. If it's complex in any way, or would appeal to a smaller number of buyers, a good estate agent is worth their weight ion gold!
The presenter (Lady) has such an arrogant and disrespectful attitude towards the homeowners. Trying to ridicule their taste. Her jokes about the carpets etc are out of place. Rude presenter.
The presenter is from the “aristocracy” don’t you know…so most of us ARE beneath her.
The thing is,when you get older it doesn’t seem important to spend money changing things. When you’re not so nimble and have health conditions changing decor is the last thing on your mind. Go into most older peoples homes and you’ll see things from a span of years, that have a special meaning. This collection is the same as keeping things from your childhood or memories of your children. I call it life memories. It’s not a collection of mismatched items. These people are living in their “home”, not a sterile environment.
She used to have a programme similar to this in USA or Canada which was dressing up properties so they would sell.
She should not judge the decor but see the potencial of the house
I don't know who the presenter is, ( was!) but she's very annoying, doesn't even know that tigers have stripes apparently ( re the carpet).
It's Sophie Allsop, sister of Kirsty. She did a similar series in Canada. Still snobby and descending.
I think we can gather she doesn't like their carpets😮 agree she's very annoying😠
This is how is was back in the early 2000's. I was selling my house in 2000, and insisted the agent show the house. They were not too impressed, but I was paying their commission.
I would be very Very upset with that estate agent nice refit loved the people who lived there
That agent need sacking or re-training. She could have mentioned the fact that it looks a bit dated and could do with a bit of updating and de-cluttering. I think that the fact the agent is going to get thousands for selling the house, the very least would be to do the viewings. If I lived localy to this estate agents, I would be going elsewhere to sell my house. What a sad human being Lisa the agent must be.
I sold my house few months back, went to agents office for final signing. Not one single thankyou from them, it all just seemed an effort that we even there. Easiest 7k they made. Customer service non existent
It doesn't matter that this is from 16 years ago - something that hasn't changed is that sellers and buyers have no imagination. The seller can't see the house the way the buyers will. The buyers cannot imagine what the house will look with a paint and carpet change. So much wrong here, especially the estate agent letting all this business go on without caring - completely useless. The estate agent has too much business. No sale board, trash piled up next door - no thanks!
Totally agree. Bought my house this year and I so had to see pass the red bedroom walls and carpets. Lime green banister and cupboards and bedroom doors upstairs. With a lot of white paint, so happy I looked passed the colour scheme
@@sylsuthss Hopefully it was good for you that the seller or their agent left it in those polarizing colors. Bad for the seller who likely could have sold for thousands more by first doing the painting in white or another neutral color. Most people have poor visualization skills and no imagination - they cannot unsee a house once they have seen it as a mess, poorly decorated, or with questionable colors or weird/clunky layouts of furniture. The average house has too much furniture and clutter. When I've been touring houses for sale I have been amazed how many people keep shabby, broken, and just plain worn out furniture - or like in your case leaving paint colors too personalized.
It really is mad how sellers can't seem to put themselves in the position of buyers. Wood chip wallpaper, garish colours, stained kitchens etc etc....why not just decorate your home in a neutral colour, look after the appliances and surrounds and there's a good chance you'll sell it for what it's worth. Took me 6 days from advertising my house to get it sold, with three offers on the table. Did the viewings myself, made a little pack of questions and answers about my home and gave each person my contact information.
I thought the elderly couple didn't have an agent that's why they did showings themselves. Turns out they actually have an agent, amazingly lazy one. That agent should pay them the commission. Unbelievable.
It's normal in the UK for the owners to do the viewings. Usually, only when a house is empty does the agent have the keys to show buyers around.
If the husband is at home, retired, then why is Betty doing the ‘showings’ herself. One could do the downstairs while the other did the upstairs. Never mind the carpets - that mess next door would put me off before I even got out of the car.
I’m surprised that viewers of the house could not look beyond the superficial
On one level yes indeedy…but on the other hand…people aren’t always that insightful! :-0
Once when selling a house we had a 3rd recpetion room which had no furniture in it at that point, and one buyer just stood there going "But what could you USE this room for?" She could not imagine how it could possibly be utilized.
Wow the agent is not the sort of agent I would use. Change the agent would be my suggestion. What is the current agent doing to ensure a sale up until now? Nothing at all !
If I saw that hoard at the neighbors, I would leave without looking at the house.
When my grandparents were wanting to downsize, their neighbours basically had a rubbish tip in their backyard. This was putting off buyers when they saw it through the upstairs window. My grandparents paid to remove their rubbish. It did the trick. This was the early 90s.
That’s what will stop me selling as well. My neighbours have the place like a slum and I desperately need to move for health reasons
Painting wallpaper creates a real future problem. It is quick.
time to change agents
I live in Canada and viewings are rarely done by the homeowner. It is felt people express their views more freely to a Realtor and most Realtors leave feedback to the Sellers.
Why did they make it a 2 bed? If buyers couldn't use their imagination before, they sure not going to imagine a single bed in the box room.
Thank you for sharing your video at 12:02 those ceiling tile's are a no no they needed taken down instead of painting over them they are are a fire hazard the estate agent should have gone over with other things that should be best to change for the house to be sold. God bless and stay safe ❤
In Scotland it has been the norm for the owner to show the property for sale.
But did the couple actually move in the end & who purchased the house??
Any decent estate agent could sell that house very quickly.. any buyer that can not look beyond the decor should to look for a brand new shoe box of a house and pay double the money 🤔
❤ thIs couple!
Why no kitchen or bathroom pictures?
they only spent 500 on the total revamp so no funds for those rooms I imagine...
I can’t understand why a perfectly good house is classed as unsellable just because of the dated decor. People want show homes these days, and are too lazy to pick up a paint brush. Ridiculous
Would also like to add that perhaps a lot of people don't have the money to update.
The only comment that I have is that when you were showing the property is that you showed a little bit of the kitchen which was horrible and we all know that kitchen and bathrooms are the most expensive! Bedrooms and living rooms you spend very little money there in comparison. why not put the most of the money where people Don’t think in their mind “Oh my god I have to remodel the kitchen and the bathroom” not saying that you have to remodel those but you would have to do a serious facelift on both which can be done fairly inexpensively, but that’s where a lot of people who are buying, including myself, are looking to see how much expense is it going to be to fix the kitchen and the bathrooms
That is true. For me, they are the selling points of any home. I would have been willing to buy the house as it is and declutter and paint for 500 pounds but if the kitchen and bathroom aren't great and needs extensive updating, it will be a put-off.
This apparently was for sale in the 2008s, in a VERY difficult market for selling houses. Easy for averyone trashing the agent seen from 2024 where houses are sold like hot cookies..
Surely the decor is immaterial. It's the potential that counts.
That's not a blue shag carpet, the presenter is as bad as the estate agent. She's very judgemental and patronising. That is a much-loved house filled with happy memories and any problems are suoergucial. It just needs a new owner who wants to make more happy memories and who is willing to update it to their taste.
There is nothing wrong in that home, I would buy it in a heart beat purely for the fact they had spent 30 happy years there. Plus the fact I don’t need a hole load of money spent on the place when I’m going to come in and decorate to my own taste, people sadly lack vision these days you have to move in with your mind, look around see your furniture there, it’s only going to go up in prise if the home owner has to spend a ton a redecoration! As you have pointed out the only thing that would put me off is the next doors rubbish dump, as it says we don’t care about our place or how much it devalues your home. I have lived over from a family like that for 33 years and when we have tried to sell people just drive off. If they asked social services to to step in they would give them an O.T and get them a stair lift. I think there home is lovely and a person that’s looking for a home that’s vintage would be well chuffed but the I’m 52 and grew up with values and a strong work ethic, these days people want a police for free!
Depends how you look at it. I've viewed many a pensioners home, and common downsides are electrics, poor furnishing (polystyrene tiles are the bane of my life) and general neglect. Sometimes neglect that will end up costing you dearly.
@@RebornBabyCrazy You must think like me. I haven’t moved house very often but there are atmospheres in houses. Some are warm and feel happy, some a bit creepy and one I viewed had absolutely no atmosphere at all. I later found out no one had found happiness living in it. The neighbours were toxic.
By the way, I have two reborn and reborn twins lol. I love my sleeping breathing premature baby.
defo case of lazy agent not doing the job solid house supprised not snapped up.
When I lived in England it was normal for the owner to show prospective buyers around the house. Estate agents only listed the property then took their commission when the house sold. Moving to America we were amazed that the realtor came and showed the house. Not only that they wrote up the contract when an offer was made, did all the paperwork and showed up at the closing.
Did it sell or not?
So if you live in the property you do the viewings yourself and then you pay the estate agent their fee....why the heck would you bother you can put your house on the market and use the exact same listing apps as they do! I would put a fence up between my house and my neighbours house if their front garden looked that bad!
Absolutely! My EA used an old man (79 yrs old no less) who was miserable as sin, knew nothing about my home and was useless. Ditched my EA (as is my right under the 14 day rule), used Strike, did the viewings myself and got three offers 6 days later.
What about the kitchen and the master and the bathroom? You didn’t even mention those and they are major items.
The maximum amount of money to spend in the reno is $5,000 so it wouldn't have been enough for the kitchen and bathroom
I think the house looks good but people would not be able to buy beds ect to sell their house and most people dont have anywhere to pack their stuff away. Most people can imagine how they would have the property themselves.
Loved the owners, everyone would love a nan like her. The problem I have with this programme though is.. they spent £500 on some paint and decluttering but even after 4 weeks the house still hadn't sold which kind of tells me that the issues are probably more to do with the kitchen and bathroom which they failed to show us or address and are as everyone knows.. the money areas of a house. I also hate that they never say if the house eventually sold or not and if so, how much for. The estate agent was useless and just took their money for doing nothing at all, could have listed it themselves and saved the realtor fee.
@@thaismatsumoto You're right, they did and if you look, the kitchen is outdated, lacking wall units etc, the bathroom you couldn't see very well but from what could be seen.. looked outdated too, I understand that they might also be only cosmetic but those rooms are generally what sell your house and should be more of the focal areas when transforming to sell.
The female presenter is an absolute disgrace with the disparaging remakes she is making about the decor. I like to see the decor in her house when she is in her eighties. All she had to say was it’s out of date and would make a great renovation project but we need to declutter and brighten it up.
No offence, but blimey - magnolia from top to bottom? You could have made over the property without making it so completely bland. A feature wall here and there at least?
What a lovely lady Betty is. The estate agent is disgraceful, what was she actually doing to earn her fee? I wouldn't be paying her and doing the job myself.
This was posted 2 weeks ago, but then it says the home price is "as of Autumn 2008" so this is actually 16 years ago?? I would have said I hope this video cost that estate agent her job, but she might even be retired by now. I don't understand about the fireplace in the front room being completely closed off. Is that a cover? Does it work? They never mentioned a word about either fireplece (also the one in the second bedroom upstairs) either during the reno or while showing the house. I would have very much liked to see what they did with the kitchen. I think they should have waited to finish the video until the property sold so that they could report how long it took after the reno to sell and for what price.
Compromising security if they have a for sale board? Isn't that what's happening every time Betty is opening her front door and showing strangers around her house?
The estate agent is just plain lazy. I hope others that have houses with this company and haven't sold, look into it.
This company should not be paid for selling her house.
As for being rude about this ladys decor 😠
I dont know one person that keeps someone elses decor when they move in.... usually, it's the 1st thing to go.
Hilarious scene at the garden gate where our two intrepid 'property experts' are pretending to drink mugs of tea! RADA trained!
No way all that work was done for under £500, even if it was done 16 years ago. Carpet alone would have cost that much
'Just have a quiet word with your neighbour about the sh*t in their garden'.
Then dial 999 for an ambulance, to get your broken nose fixed at A&E.
She should remember that what is 'clutter' to her are 'memories' for this couple.
Personally, I wouldn't give this young woman house-room.
Buyers don't see memories. They smell must and see clutter. If you're planning to sell, you need to do what is best to shift the perspectives to your favour.
@@KaeMaiden If the prospective buyers can't empathise themselves, the estate agent, (if they happen to have any themselves,) could mention the sellers age, and how difficult it must be to let go of all the memories. The agent,if any good at the job at all, points out the spaciousness, etc to the client...Still wouldn't give her houseroom.
I love seeing the children helping. Something rare now days.
What always gets me is that the owners are not going to leave their furniture and ornaments. Yes the carpet would stay and of course you the wall paper. But I bet new owners would change that. When I went to see the house I live in now, it had pink carpet, anaglypta wallpaper painted bay blue. A worn out main bedroom carpet the list goes on. But I look past that, knew I wasn’t keeping any of it and factored that all in when I purchased the house. When you view a property it is not your home until you buy it and then you make changes that then make it your home.
Weird I would see through the decor so easy. If I was looking. I have had eight homes, I have improved each one and made a profit.
You can always look past the clutter, but the owners should remove personal items to help sell the property
I'd love to know how they managed to pack up, paint and put down brand new carpet for under £500! Admittedly 8 years ago, but it's still low. Add a zero maybe?
It depends where you are in the country...where I live properties sell within DAYS of hitting the market..all be it to people who just want second homes which forces local people out of the equation 😢..casting all of that aside..prospective buyers should be able to see beyond Betty's decor..It suited her at the end of the day..anyone who can't see beyond that isn't worth bothering about.
Why did you not tell the couple to change Estate agents!!
thought they were going to say that they wanted to stay there after looking round .🤣
I had a shock when I sold my house, it took an hour...I thought at least 6 months...Panic time 😮
That is not a shag pile carpet
the bedroom looks actually very cute, the office is okay, the livingroom still looks terible...but on the other side, for only investing 500 pounds it all looks much better...what I absolutelly don´t like, is the outsidewall at the front, of the house ...its a bubble wall in gray...and it looks terrible.the backyard is beautifull and I like cornerhouses, because they give more privacy.
Could never Imagine kirsty and phil being so rude or blunt to the seller, they would give positive advise in a lovely manner. So what if the house needs updated a buyer with a vision could look past it its just the wrong people selling it for Betty
And this is why most, but not all, estate agents generally have a bad name. You’re being paid to sell a house, not an interior design concept. Paint and paper is superficial and you should already have plenty of photos that show off the good points and the drawbacks so that you’re not wasting everybody’s time when people book a viewing.
That presenter is too sniffy as well. If she can’t sell a house without totally redecorating and refurnishing it she’s in the wrong business and no use to man nor beast either. I feel really cross about the way these elderly vendors are being treated.
The carpet on stairs was not worn! Maybe old but not worn!
The GFC was around this time. Prices plummeted in the UK and people couldn't get Mortgages easily. The Agent was an utter disgrace and should have been replaced. I bet the Neighbours rubbish didn't get moved!
Do you really think that either the estate agent or the next door neighbours would have been so eager to change without the t.v. crews being there
Very nice transition! Too bad they had a lazy realtor. They needed a motivated agent!
Old mismatched furniture replaced with new, cheaper mismatched furniture.
I dont suppose the neighbour has got rid of the rubbish yet
Where was the bathroom? Kitchen?
What passes for sellable in the UK is astounding to the rest of the world! It’s small, outdated even with the renos. Cheap carpet and a terrible paint job do not a home make. I do hope they sold it because they seem a lovely couple.
Not really 😂 what an idiotic comment. Have you been all over the world looking at property for sale? You only have to watch every single renovation video on youtube to realise sellable is open to interpretation.
Yeah I think that estate agency should be shut down what a bone idol business this needs to be investigated bet they quick to take commission
It doesn't matter what color blankets are on the bed, that lady is crazy
She thinks shes Kirsty Allsop 😂
What is with the LOUD background noise???? You can even hear the talking.
I thought the lounge room carpet would have been the sitting room carpet would have been ripped out and published the boards or
New estate agent and presenters a little fewer put downs from preening Madame.
Would have changed the blue carpet out as well and not covered with a rug. Much improved though 👍👀
Whilst I can see that a more uncluttered house is easier on the eye for viewers, dont they have their own ideas of how they want the house to look, have they no imagination to see beyond.
Next door ! Well say no more
That has 3 bedrooms? What are they? Shoeboxes? That isn't shag carpet. Needs to be more neutral. Some of their stuff, should be boxed up, so people can envision their own stuff in it.
when was this made? it must be 15 years old at least.
The poor darlings. It should sold even as is, because one can always see beyond the decor. Seldom can one buy a home where something should be fixed or changed to suit their own taste
She’s an embarrassment to her profession!! to say that if they ask us to show it, we would do that. NO!,, her job, and the money that she gets for listing that house requires HER to do that not the householder who’s 80 years old . The agent needs to go back to school and come to realize what her responsibility is. It is Unbelievable the lack of real concern for people and yet they want their money!
Yes lazy realtor.saves all car trips to showing homes
She shouldn’t have gotten paid
SHAME on that lazy agent. I would have told her to kick rocks!
I thought it was her job
Not mention the show is awful.
