  • While the Viper's HOTAS is easier, the Hornet's HOTAS has some strong and often overlooked merits. Hopefully these tips make the Hornet feel better for you. :)
Something I forgot to talk about is the RECCE Switch. It's a small button on the stick that blanks your HMD when you press it. It has a secondary function of toggling EXP on the SA page when you TUC (target under cursor) a contact. This is useful as the SA TUC is shown at unlimited range on the HMD, so you can TUC a target on the SA, press RECCE to EXP on them, and they'll show from unlimited range on your HMD for as long as that track remains on your SA page. Apparently the cursor is supposed to magnet to contacts on the SA, so EXP shouldn't be necessary to keep the cursor on there someday if they fix that.
    Thanks for watching.

Even C.W. Lemoine (real ex F-16 and F/A-18C pilot) says that he prefers the F-16 because the HOTAS set up seemed better and that there's more you can do. I learned DCS A-10C HOTAS first, and learned it well and think it's amazing. The F-16C, at least for air to ground, feels like a considerable step back in that department and I don't care for it. When it comes to air to air, the F/A-18 and F-16 seem similarly capable and the HOTAS functions are nowhere near as complex. For AA, it's more about the range, sensitivity, and fancy automation that radar + computer can do when it comes to targetting that might make one jet better than the next. I'm pretty sure those who knock on the F/A-18's capability simply don't know it.

This is fantastic information. For some reason my TDC up/down axis wont' change the range/scale on any of the pages, but everything else is a huge help for me.

For changing the scale, what is important is that the cursor leaves the radar box and re-enters the box. You don't need to hit the top of the screen (and doing that actually makes it harder to do it fast enough).
Slow is smooth and smooth is fast :p

You have incredible cursor control. Would you mind saying which throttle you are using and can you mention how you have your x/y cursor settings configured in DCS (curves, saturation, etc)? This was so informative.

No curves, no adjustments, just a steady hand and the Xbox joystick like slew on the Virpil CM3 throttle

Awesome! Back after 2,5 years of not playing this refreshed my mind, and agree, love the hornet and guess im somewhat damaged by the release of the 16, it was trash and havent touched it since😂

Meanwhile haters keep trying to have radar on the left and complain.
