I spent a whole afternoon researching budget guitars, I carefully whittled my short list down to two: the Taylor Academy 10E and the Martin DJr-10E. I was listening to the shootouts and I was leaning toward the Martin, until I read an article in Guitar World saying it "ticks all the boxes", calling it "the perfect guitar for just about anyone". I decided on the Martin DJr-10E at that point. What's funny is my friend's main guitar is a Martin D10E, so naturally I had to compare the two. But the D10E is $250 more than the Jr, so I had to make sure it was worth it. But he's never played the Jr so how could he know? That's when I stumbled upon this video. Now it's decided. The guitar that is meant for me at this point in my life is the Martin D10E. I've never been more certain about anything in my entire life. But I could have saved a lot of time if I had just imitated my friend. lol

Are you still certain? I am in the same position; I just picked up a Djr-10e a couple of weeks ago as a Christmas present to myself, now I am contemplating exchanging it for the D10e for the obvious lower tone and louder volume due to the larger body. The extra cost doesn't concern me as its negligible and I originally budgeted much more for a new guitar.

@@IRequireMedication I want to get my first guitar should I get the Djr since its lighter and easier or should I just go with the D10

That junior sounded better to me. For a second I thought the guitars were opposite when I did my blind hearing test on this vid. Need to get my hands on both still before I pull the trigger on a $500-1000 guitar.

I just ordered one yesterday, should come in by Thursday.
I'm excited to own a Martin, but will have to get used to a Dread body since my Primary acoustic is an Ibanez AC340 shaped like a Martin 000-10e, and also in a dark wood Mahogany and Rosewood bosy/bridge.
My D10E is the Sapele wood version, and a Lefty version (All my guitars are left handed oriented).
I hope this martin will sound and play as beautiful as my Ibanez.
    Nice playing!

After all this time how do you like the Martin? I'm going to be ordering later this week and I'm leaning toward the Martin D-10E Sapale but the other finalist is a Taylor 110E. I've played both and like both but they do have different tones. Does anything bug you about the Martin?

Hey Ian, I really appreciate written cues of what guitar you’re playing. Tasteful presentation man. Do you have any preference between those two?

I was wondering if you are playing with the stock strings (mediums on the 10e and lights on the Jr)? For these Road Series spruce tops, the sound is slightly brighter than the more expensive Martins, but still sound very good. What surprised me (at least to my ears) is that the Jr seemed to have a little more "punch" than the 10e.

Junior has more clarity but D10E has beefier tone and greater dynamic range. I got recently comfortable with Grand Auditorium shape pf my Cort A6 Gold. It has lower bout of the same width and slightly shallower or the same depth like Dreadnought. Maybe, I should get dread this time because I need a loud guitar that is easy to sing with. I should put Nashville tuning on my Sigma 000ME.

I'd love to learn the finger picking song you're playing on the Djr. Is there a tab or name of the song or is that original? Thanks!

The Dreadnought Jr was holding its own surprisingly well until Ian played it with a capo. Then... CRASH. Too bad, it seemed like a better sounding Taylor GT Urban Ash up to that point.

I didn’t hear a “crash”. Think the DJr held up very well in comparison to the full size D10. I have a DJr and a full size Martin DRS2 dread. Love them both and yes the DRS2 is fuller and louder, but each has its niche. I also own a Martin 00-16, which is awesome. Blends highs and lows with great overall tone.

@@IRequireMedication Hard to say. The Junior is more comfortable to play being smaller and sounds really good. I love the deeper bass sound of the DRS2 though. However my right arm gets tired after awhile reaching over the deeper body.

@@debbiewheeler4066 I appreciate your feedback. Being relatively new to the guitar, I picked up a Djr10 as my 'one year' reward to myself for sticking with it as an upgrade from the FS800 I purchased originally. It's probably the better option at this point, and reward myself with a D15 at the two or three year mark depending on my progress. Thank you
