Yeah anytime you have to take the bat out and back in you want to make sure it's not so close to the playfield that is could rub against it. I often go by feel but there's a tool you can by and stick under the bat that is the right distance. I usually just push all the way in and then barely back it out so there's just the slightest up/down movement.
