  • Although Mochitsuki rice cake pounding is often a New Year’s Tradition, in fall my family and I visited a famous tea café and mochi restaurant in the countryside of Fukui where you can try your hand at pounding the rice to make mochi.
Set in an old Kominka, or large traditional house, the restaurant is called Kine to Usu, which literally means Mallet and mortar, the tools used to pound the rice cake.

So interesting! Though, Omg, that looks dangerous! But the staff has obviously embodied the pound-n-turn choreography so that it's second nature. It's heartening to know some of the ancient traditions are alive and well. Thank you for this glimpse into Japanese new year preparations.

Unfortunately many of the traditions and craftsmen are fading away little by little, but some people are continuing the tradition. It's great to support it when you find it.
