I got Guardia once elk hunting in Colorado, it’s horrible and I didn’t get over it until returning to my doctor in California. He prescribed antibiotics and I was fine a few days later. I never want it again! Ugh!

As a Nurse, and am appalled that David, a man in his prime, had to die fof something that is treatable and curable Dehydration and electrolyte imbalance can quickly cause mental confusion and disorietation . i wonder why there could not be a “treatment kit” available to pack along in case one gets “BeaverFever” in spite of precautions. No one expects to get sick miles away from help. Aantibiotics are not controlled substances, just need to be prescribed i guess in that way they ARE controlled, but should not be withheld in an emergency. and
. Best bet is to ask theripersonal Dr. to provide an Rx for emergency only, of course.. I know people do cross the border to mexico and buy medications and also buy in Canada.. some meds are cheaper and some are just not approved by the FDA in the u s. one example is an aniti diarrhea liquid remedy : “Donnagel” used to be OTC in US until the standards of ppmillion impuriities in one of the ingredients in the formula were raised . Still avail in Canada I hear. Donnagel is extremely effective in stopping intractible diarrhea, and preventing dehydration and i always had it in my first aid kit when we went camping, (until it was no longer available in US. . And i recently read about a soup made from carrots, just carrots and pureed, it is used in third world countries to save lives from cholera. ..it coats the intestines and binds the cholera organism from attaching.. people die of dehydration from violent diarrhea from cholera. The story had information how to make it..precise proportions & method. I am not a Doctor, and everyone. should discuss these things with a Doctor before heading out on a planned trail adventure. Safety first and be prepared as well as possible. And as Bryan always advises , do not go alone. if David had not been alone on the trail..if only someone had been with him. My heart goes out to his family and friends. He’s been gone a long time, but you never. forget the loss of a loved one.❤💐🧸

I got it while on an Outward Bound course in Maine. That was the start of a year-long internship program pre-college after high-school. Visited a female friend at Pine Manor all girls College in Chestnut Hill, suburban Boston, for a weekend while needing a restroom about every 12 minutes.
Saw a doctor that Monday. Providing a specimen was a tough task…
That weekend, unsuccessfully trying to woo Betsy Campbell was one of the least enjoyable of my youth.

An autopsy on a body that has been dead for several months outside may not show a lot of symptoms of a fall or drowning. What a scary and unpleasant way to be lost, poor David :C Thank you so much for all the info about filtration. I used to work at a veterinary office and dogs that caught giardia were so miserable! Thankfully, medical care makes it a lot less likely to kill humans and animal companions if discovered in time.

Pis-ee-koe is how its pronounced if you are curious. Don't sweat it. There are quite a few areas here that are not easy to pronounce. It is a very rural area. Very peaceful. A lot of people take the trails and don't adequately prepare. Thank you for highlighting this man's unfortunate story. May he rest in peace.

Well first of all no one owns cases. I have been working on this case for a long time. Yes he also did a video but we have very different styles. He's covered many cases months or even years after I already have. But that's just how it is sometimes when you're covering the same genre. Whoever that person was that made that comment, if they watched my channel and others they would see my point..
And I have spoken with Kyle on numerous occasions. We're on good terms and he just recently started covering cases and I wished him well. I even invited him to get involved in SAR. Obviously there will be some overlap when covering missing hiker cases just like true crime channels will have overlap. Anyway, thank you for your feedback and thank you for subscribing! I really appreciate it🙏🙏

Humans.... encroaching on animals, pollution by humans, industry, widening highways, etc. I have seen it happen 1st hand where I live and I am horrified. I lived in the woods for a number of years and what I have seen happen is just dispicable and people with money 💰🤑 don't care and are the major cause of it! Hotels in the area were one of the absolute biggest contributing factors.

Yes like I said, it's one of those things that I didn't say drinking unfiltered water will always get you sick. In fact I know a few hikers that rarely ever filtered and they were ok. My point was your chances of getting sick are much higher when you don't. But I'm glad you never did. It's no fun! Thank you for watching and sharing your experiences!

My daughter recently went to the Keane NY area which us just East of Lake Placid.
We live north if Lake Placid about 40 miles.
She brought friends from Buffalo NY with her and they hiked on Sunday.
The young man who was in very good shape had knelt down and drank raw water from a running stream.
About 10 hrs later this young man was vomiting continuously and was very sick.
I told my daughter that you never know what is upstream from you. It could be a dead animal, decaying plant material, feces from numerous animals.
You just can't go off into the mountains with no idea what you're doing or how to handle situations that could arise unforseen.

My health never quite recovered from the combination of the Giardia AND the hit to my gut bacteria from 3 doses of antibiotics 😢 honestly, it was the start of a cascade of ill health that started back then with Giardia in my early 20's and continues to this day and I'm now 50. So we are in special forces training and we send two guys with everyone's canteens so about 15-50 or them in one and two quart sizes and these guys fill them up and bring them back. Then everyone puts their iodine tablets. We cannot expect them two guys to have tablet for all them canteens as everyone has their own. They also may forget and miss a few. We in our base camp and suddenly our cadre sergeant yells out, there's no iodine in this water? Seems he was not paying attention to our procedures and his fault for not treating his water. Not sure if he caught anything as we graduated a couple of weeks later. This is 1990 also and I walked the Northville trail solo in 2010. The story is also in a book "At The Mercy of The Mountains" - by Peter Bronski

I'm curious Bryan if you have ever been involved in one of these searches. I know you have training in these situations.

Why oh why can’t we give people the medicine they’re going to need in case something like that happens I mean how hard is it to say oh yeah, I had to drink water from a stream and I’m sick and I think I’ve got this but wait I’ve got pills in my backpack medical kit for this. Why can’t we just make medicine available otc like that it is is amazing that in the 20th centuries they don’t have that

Actually you make a good point. And for me since my Dr knows what I do, I carry an extensive first aide kit including the meds for giardia. Some people think I'm crazy for carrying such an extensive first aid kit but I rather be prepared than not.

unfortunately some people think bros before hoes means you can do your bros hoes cuz ya bros, but what it really means is that when your bro goes through a break up and that hoe comes calling on you to ruin your friendship with your bro, and she will, you say "nah kick rocks hoe that's my bro!"
Wait, did I just create a song?

Hey. I got giardia from river water in the mountains in N.Carolina when I was just-turned 18, and it was AWFUL. We were told it was from wild pigs in the area pooping in or near the water. We were very very sick. 🤢🫣
