    I totally agree with the “exact phrase” thing with Echos. That’s a big reason we’ve been slow to really incorporate as much smart home stuff as we’d like. It’s like we have to learn their language instead of them learning our language, like ChatGPT has done.

    Something to keep in mind with Chat GPT is that it's working from a dataset in 2021, so specifically, when you are talking about software and changes to UI, menus and features it can be outdated. Google's Bard AI has internet search capabilities and can be more up-to-date, however, I have noticed it's not nearly as detailed as Chat GPT's responses are when providing step-by-step instructions.

    • @LymphNode125
      @LymphNode125 Pƙed rokem

      Bard has no internet search, it gives you a button to "Google it" instead. There's a difference...

    • @CrankyCoder
      @CrankyCoder Pƙed rokem

      I was going to suggest the same thing. As good as chatgpt is, asking it for "the best" and what not doesn't work quite as well as you would hope because since it's dataset time frame, way better options could have come out. Where chatgpt DOES excel is conceptual and guided responses. The step by steps are fantastic, and even if not spot on, get you real close. Writing code it's pretty good at to. Yaml is childs play for it. I have had chatgpt write full python programs for me, then bundle it into docker containers with the docker build commands, and then generate a generic kubernetes deployment for me.

  • @nzhook
    @nzhook Pƙed rokem +1

    I was amazed when I asked for a custom python script and it didn't just provide the script it also explained how to write the YAML to use it. But then I tried it and it didn't work as it was missing a module not available in Home Assistant :( But I do agree having an automation engine such as home assistant understand and/or reply with more natural language will be really cool. (I dont consider Ahexa or Giggle Home anything more than an assistant)
    Also I like the extra touch with the comments, excellent job.

  • @Aurleis
    @Aurleis Pƙed rokem

    2:41 - Great video, I took advantage of this as soon as I saw this video come up on my alerts. One Tip: since the YAML coding seems geared to copying the YAML in your automations.yaml file, if you'd prefer to have it done in your GUI, paste the code as it tells you (if you forgot to specify that you want it in the GUI), modify it so that the indents are good and the first "-" by the alias is taken out since this is more in line with writing directly to the automations.yaml document in your config directory. Anyway, then you can copy the coding you used and tell GPT-4 that you want future automations written in a specific format and tell it to include a lot of detail in the description, whatever you want. But def recommend using GPT-4 and not the "free" GPT-3.5 as it is prone to errors. Testing is also necessary for the more complex automations, as I had to have GPT-4 make a few modifications.
    I would recommend sticking with GPT-4 in that single conversation and make it specific to HA Automations (for example). You'll be limited as to how much you can get it to do, but if you change it to GPT-3.5, you're stuck with that level, in that chat for all time, and you will have to create a "new conversation" to get GPT-4 and also start over by explaining things as the AI doesn't read across your chats. Better to stick with v4 and just take a few hours break when it tells you.
    I also love that you can build on the conversation of the individual chats (without having to repeat). I know nothing about writing firewall rules and when I got my Ubiquiti network equipment, I specified the equipment, topography, VLANs, which devices on those VLANs, the VLAN IDs, the Gateway IP/Subnet, IP range, etc, told it what kind of security concerns I was looking at and that I wanted it to tell me the list of firewall rules in which order and what category and boom, it spit it out. Heck, I even described layout and asked it what I needed to cool my server closet, CFM fans, positioning, types, etc. Sorry, but this AI thing is pretty sweet.
    8:14 - LOL, I actually had GPT write an appeal letter to my health insurance company in anticipation of a denial letter.

I feel like parents are all too eager to plaster their kids over the internet.

    AI is pretty amazing, but when you think about it, it's pretty well doing what a human would do, but doing it a lot quicker. It's scraping information from the internet, putting it together and then formatting it based on the information available.
    It's amazing, and for some a little scary, how "human" the responses can be, but you are right that you have to be very careful to make sure it is right. If you tell the AI it got it wrong, it usually will then retry the whole thing, but often if it gets it wrong the first time, it will struggle even the second or third time. I think it's great for getting ideas and starting points for things.

    What you seem to think is complex is for many programmers amateur. I never thought there would be a level below script kiddie, but here we are. Not saying I’m a programmer fyi just saying this is like the sort of programming you learn as a kid, no offence.

    All the name brand smart home speakers now are stupid. You would figure with internet access they could do a decent job with information and task manipulation without us having to dive deep into the how to information on the internet, yet they don't. Whatever company incorporates AI (when it gets better) to do these things with their smart speaker should be able to rule the smart home world.

      It gave the instructions but it didn't tell you how to implement it
      The shortcuts and home assistant is a human interface to the human that operates it
      Now let AI fix that
