My parents had a white 1976 International Scout. I have found memories of my mom always grinding the gears trying to go from Reverse to 1st.
While I’m happy to see the Scout brand resurrected, I think it’s a huge missed opportunity to reintroduce this as an EV only. I really think they need to go ICE first to get the brand relaunched and compete with Ford and Stellantis with Bronco and Wrangler. Trying to bring this out as an EV when you can already buy a Rivian, Tesla, Ford, Hummer, Chevy EV Pickup/SUV. They’re already too late to the party IMO. The original buyers of the Scout are going to want an ICE option and buyers that do want an EV have no idea that Scout was an iconic American Truck brand back in the day. At the end of the day, I think bringing back the brand could have been good, but the execution I fear will be a missed opportunity by bringing this to market as an EV only option.
Did he really say it’s only going to be 4 doors? Boy I sure hope not. I’m very excited about this release and I really really want it in 2 doors! 🙏🏾 😅 Great coverage thanks!
Yeah, I prefer the 2 door versions
A very close friend has a 1975 Scout II her dad bought new. 345 automatic. I've seen pictures of her at a year old sitting in front of it while camping at the Grand Canyon. Her dad parked it years ago and was going to sell it. She flipped out and had it shipped to her garage in Texas from California where it still sits. Body and paint are original. A talented detailer could probably bring it back. Tailgate and the drip rails have some rust spots from cargo bars. Otherwise it's complete. Rebuild the engine and transmission, go through all the mechanicals, and it would be a great survivor. Or not much to restore it. Interior is immaculate.
What I loved when the new BRONCO was released, it brought back enthusiasm for the older models. Hopefully when this new Scout is released it will motivate her to restore her dad’s!
Another great interview. I love how you bring industry people to your channel to give us insight of the industry. That alone puts your channel above the rest. Thank you
Our pleasure!
When I saw that VW is going to do to International Harvester what BMW did to Cooper, I was hesitant. After 1:43 into the video and he says it's all EV, I'm completely done. If it was cool, I'd buy a VW Scout because I love the original and as an old guy, have a soft spot for retro vehicles. But not if it's EV. That's just ridiculous. I'd have to tow it anywhere I'd want to go just to make sure I had enough juice to play once I was there. Then I'd have to tow it home.
EV and "outdoor lifestyle" don't mix. Thanks but no thanks. Drop in an Inline-6 or a V-8 and I'd literally be a "happy camper".
The Scout is somewhat of an iconic vehicle that could sell well in the future. It definitely has potential.
George , I have been watching you for a long time, and you are the only one that really does solid interviews with car people in the industry. Really Always we’ll done, Back in high school or maybe a little after I went with a friend of my who is gone now to Porry’s International scout in West Haverstraw in Rockland County where I still live, 22 Miles north of NYC. He brought a Brand New Scout yellow with brown trim omg still one of my favorite vehicles ever , He almost drove it into a lake the first week of ownership, but it survived and he loved ever minute of it. Looking forward to more conversations with Nathan also at the cigar bar!
Thank you, Evan . . . of all the things I do, these interviews are by far the most fascinating for me personally. And of course, love sharing conversations and cigars with Nathan!
I'm so happy to hear a designer talk about the balance of cladding vs body sculpture. Lets hope they keep the use of black plastic to minimum.
Jeep Wrangler was redesigned in the 1990's and it too had square headlights. Jeep enthusiasts hated them so they brought back round headlights and it's been that way ever since. It was a design thing. Also, not sold on the electrification. Pricey as hell and inconvenient. Owners will be confined to staying close to home. Is this what the government is after by restricting our driving and adding road and Super Fund taxes to everyone's household electric bill? A hybrid is much more practical. Good luck.
Does not make any sense. I like the Jeep with the square headlights.. and in the Scout too..they are cool and simple.."i dont" mind if Volks Wagen would adopted International Harvester and Navistar.."
I like the Jeep Wrangler with the Square lights on them..looks good
Great interview Chris he’s such a wonderful and genuine guy
I grew up in a Travelall, so I hope it will have the torque that the originals did, with more reliability, along with 3/4 ton towing capability. My Father used to say, that the Travelall had more miles vertically, than horizontally... Love the concept.
Great story!
I always laugh when they try to attach a lifestyle tag to a product.
If it was gas or a hybrid I'd be all over this.
It should be boxy like the original. Most of the new stuff has a melted jellybean protocol. We don't need another melted jellybean.
I like boxy style body on Modern SUVs. Because they are simple and easy to rebuilt.."
Scout Motors pickup(Terra) and SUV(Traveler) should have an ice generator along with an electric driveline like the new RAM's RamCharger.
I can’t wait to see this new Scout!
Make my day by making a Scout BEV 2 door mini-truck that is the same dimensions as the Bronco 2 door. That's a 174 inch long vehicle with an awesome turning radius. Everyone I know who has a 2 door Bronco loves it. I have a fear that VW will do the corporate thing and only release a bloated four door monster for the USA (like they're doing with the new bus). VW to me equals "Fear of Daring". Ignore the marketers for a change and build something with true soul. Except I fear VW long ago forgot how to do that. And yes, I owned a Bug and a Karmann Ghia and a Bus back in the day when VW still had soul.
Great info Motoman! Can’t wait for this one to go into production.
Great interview
My pleasure!
Coming to Columbia SC soon!
6' box for a camper shell no need for a roof top tent and no 3rd row in the wagon/suv
Very interesting conversation. and yes, at the end it all boils down to what 911 one can afford :D
Physical mechanical lockers are absent from production EV’s. Include those that can disconnect on the fly if you want to ignite a following of new enthusiasm. Electronic lockers of multiple motors are not only more expensive but have proven lacking in their ability to mimic a true mechanical locker. If it can smoothly cruise to the crawling course and offer serious range with 2 North America Inlets it’ll will be the base for any icing of a fully baked cake. 15:05
Regardless of what the goals are- I’m not giving up on the internal
Combustion engine.
Would LOVE to see the new Scout but not an EV.
He reminds me of Anthony Hale (Buster) from Arrested Development.
I’d buy a car from Buster
Love the comment about Porsche!
It's great you show a Scout II.....But the 800 was way cooler. Give it Bronco II suspension, pack it full of batteries, make it as powerful as a Rivian. Don't screw this up!
I own a 1965 Scout 80.
I hear through this interview that you are making an URBAN Scout to compete with the Rivian/Ford. Good luck with that.
Here's my POV
1. You need 2 different platforms. EV and a Hybrid. Even Ford realized the need for combustion power... Min tire size 37"
2. The Scout will need to be able to tackle MOAB's trails, Lake Tahoe's Rubicon Trail, Forsdyke Trail or those kind. Class 8 rock crawling Rivian's are not surviving MOAB
3. You will need to develop a racing team that can tackle KOH and Baja 1000
4. The Scout was the progression out of farm equipment and took us hunters and fishermen into the wilderness
5. Deliver on the above, your sales might make 100 thousand a year. Fords got a sheeeeit load of Lightings not selling. They've pulled back production.
This 400 thou crap is pie in the sky with brownouts happening in CA, plus, the battery replacement program needs to be addressed..
I won't hold my breath..
If I wasn't an ol' fart.. I'd be looking to building retro Scout 800's hybrid diesel powered with all the modern amenities based on the Audi platform long range suspension, City, FWY, OFF ROAD-CRAWLING
I would almost bet you that you'd sell more of them than an EV..
No EV, ever.
Great, so it's only going to be electric, which means very few can afford it.😢
The Scout is meant to be a body on frame, V-8 gasser, 2 solid axle, high clearance beast. Very disappointed they are going EV route...you know, so we can fool ourselves even more about the carbon footprint. Going out on a limb here, I'm guessing this will be FIS. It will suck for real Scout enthusiasts.
Hope the top comes off or it will be just like the Toyota FJ fail. Also round lights are a must. Very much disagree with that opinion.
Well, it's pretty sad really. Everyone that was excited to hear about a scout revival......... isnt excited anymore. I just keep having flashbacks of 5 year old me with my powerwheels dieing every time things were starting to get fun😂.
Love your show Motoman, was excited by the title of this video..... but must admit clicked off video...😢..... two minutes in , when the Guy mentioned it would be completely EV and marching to carbon net zero 😂.... there is no way currently under the battery technology and infrastructure... that it would be taken seriously by outdoor enthusiast and off-road, overlanding crowd .... Hybrid yes, but total EV.... NO ..... if brought to market, it would be a overpriced " nostalgic nameplate w/ retro styling" that only would appeal to soccer mom's, that live a gated community or a handful of rich people that have more money than sense. This overpriced EV scout will sit on dealer's lot's.... just like the Hummer, lightning and the new EV Silverado.
Imagine what rain forests would look like, if activists got the low CO2 numbers they wanted... Carbon via CO2 is actual plant food, accounting for 99% of the mass not taken by water.
Green house farmers (note the designation) pump CO2 gas into their enclosed farms, to get greater crop yield. So we can eat, and have money left for rent. Rich dad activists may not relate well with that reality. Wht acivists ignore is that when we were to deplete the atmosphere of CO2, it would just rise from soil and ocans where way more is stored than in the air.
current level is 400ppm, min. 300ppm to sustain life, and optimal is about 1000-1200ppm for food production [acc. to scientist reports for United Nations]
Yes a car is combination of a whole bunch of systems. But at the end of the day the chassis is designed separately from the body. 😂😂😂. Any body can be draped over any chassis. Saying you need the body to suffer cause of the chassis design honestly sounds stupid. Love how moto man pushes and pokes at these suits. The part I’m talking about is at 9:50
Electric only will limit the demographics. Why not use a diesel engine and promote the use of carbonless diesel.
Duh the jeep tried that and fans dispisesed the square head lights, they wisly went to the round head lights. And a EV scout will flop
Lol as a Canadian I literally laugh anytime people suggest a full ev off-road vehicle. Anyone who has actually done any sort of driving on forestry roads in this country knows that your not going to find a level 3 charger in areas that are worth exploring. Often there is zero electrical infrastructure for a hundreds of KM. I don’t know why they feel they have to go full EV, why can’t we have Plug in hybrids which have the benefits of both. Plus the batteries are like 1/10th the size… 90% of people’s driving will be electric with 1/10th the battery.
That’s why I love my Ram Rebel with a 33 gallon tank.
I bet you won’t use real chrome bumpers.
To trust VW to make a reliable vehicle...?
Can Volks Wagen make the new Scout a reliable vehicle?
Would have been cool but all electric?
The new Ford Bronco looks like a first generation Ford Bronco. The new Chevrolet Blazer could have been named anything because it in no way, shape or form looks like any Chevrolet Blazer that has ever been built. It does not even look like it could have arrived there in the few decades since the last one was built. The new Bronco is a hit and the new Blazer is a dude. In Europe you can get away with fooling the people into the belief that if you put an iconic name on something, then that is what it is, but most of us U.S. citizens will tell you not to pee on our shoes and tell us that it is raining.
you had me until EV
What bollinger could have been before they sold their soul.
This has potential to ignite in a runaway fire and also leave anyone who "Scouts" stranded with no electricity left. I like it. Maybe he can make it non-racist as well. Namaste.
100 percent EV.... Aaaand DIRECTLY into the trash with it.
Made by Volkswagen ? 😂 wiring problems ,reliability problems , but then scout had a lot of problems but I do like the idea by someone else
Who cares about Porsche, wonder if he has any real offroad experience. There's enough mallcrawlers.
This has zero chance.
Buncha bull ...aint goin to happen
Nope. I can’t stand EVs.
No.
Hipster telling outdoorsmen what they want. LOL. Electric 👎
Y’all should go hydrogen is you want to be Green!
