24 Hours Later: Can My Tiny Forest Survive?

- In today's video, I follow up on the urgent task of getting irrigation water to my tiny forest that I started yesterday. For the past 24 hours, the irrigation water has been flowing, but the big question remains: did it reach my 150 newly planted trees in time to save them from the scorching heat? Join me as I assess the situation and find out if my efforts were enough to protect my tiny forest from the relentless sun.
While monitoring the progress of my tiny forest, I also noticed a giant smoke column rising to the east. This could potentially be a wildland fire. I'll be keeping a close eye on this situation and providing updates to ensure the safety of the homestead.
In addition to these critical updates, I'll also be sharing some valuable homesteading tips. Today, I'll show you how to properly care for your fire shovel. This includes:
Cleaning it thoroughly with a rag
Sharpening the edges chisel-style using a mill file
Coating the wood handle with boiled linseed oil to preserve and protect it
Applying Ballistol to the metal parts to prevent rust and damage
Don't miss this action-packed episode full of crucial updates, unexpected challenges, and practical homestead advice. Your support, comments, and likes mean the world to me. Thank you for joining me on this journey and for being part of the Wranglerstar community! - Zábava
I have a small shovel in the back of my truck, and since watching your videos I’ve sharpened it.
Hope the fire stays away. Prayers for you, family, and homestead.
It brings me such joy to hear your voice repeating the advice I’ve listened to for years. Bless you brother. Thank you. 🙏
I worry all the time, even now, about literally everything. That closing line really set my mind at ease, thanks Cody. God bless!
Eastcoast man is learning a lot, Thanks!
I feel like I've been spoiled all my life, I never knew it took so much to take care of a shovel...I feel like I've been lazy all these years...
@@infidelsinc3482 most people don't but it's a pain and feels unkempt to use their tools
Thanks Cody for making videos. Your Channel has been my favorite for over 10 years. A moment of gratitude from me for what is work for you.
Love how you take such good care of your tools Cody!
The best channel on youtube. I've been watching for 6 years and never missed a video. God bless you Cody!
Appreciate your latest videos and getting a little more back to the basics. Very enjoyable to watch and I always learn something. Thanks for the truth you bring with your encouraging words.
Thank for the prayer. God bless us all we are in need of his love more than ever.
Praying for your situation, and a uneventful outcome, always enjoying your content, for a long time now
Good word at the end. I appreciate your boldness.
Your video yesterday was so satisfying to watch as you carefully and successfully brought the water to your new mini forest. A++
I agree. It was so satisfying
I'm really enjoying the early morning release of your videos lately. I know that it all depends on your production schedule and what you have planned for the day, but I just thought I would mention that I'm enjoying it. Your content continues to be interesting, thank you for bringing us along for the proverbial ride.
Awesome, thank you!
@@wranglerstar would you mind telling me what brand your pants are? they look perfect for the kind of work we do
You Sir bring me Joy. Thank you!!
That flood irrigation works great; no pumps, no electricity, just men's ingenuity and gravity. I would have thought that those little trees were goners, but the way snapped back is amazing. Cheers.
We do that in Missouri too for crops…nature provides 😎🇺🇸✝️
Gotta love how resilient nature is. It has gone through every extreme imaginable on each end of the scale. All of it being created by a divine God who knew we needed it. I love that Cody sees the need for additional trees as well, when most people slowly but surely remove them as they expand on their property with buildings and ag fields.
So glad to see the freshly-planted trees spring back like that! Looking good, Cody.
As I told Jeriah via chat, if you need extra hands in case of immediate fire threat to the property, reach out... it's a bit of a drive, but with some heads-up, I can get down there to assist.
Cody, ive always loved your forestry vids, from the very begining. Thank you.
Amen.
Good word Cody.
"Seek first the kingdom of right.."
Amazing. Every time you show this feature of your property I’m in awe of the ingenuity and wisdom of some men to use nature to their advantage.
I love the smell of linseed oil, if only there was a cologne of that smell. Ballistol is not too bad as well.
Stay safe from the fires! Thinking of you guys
Appropriate words of wisdom at the end there
Absolutely brilliant. You and your family are in my prayers!
Cody, thanks for the words at the end...
For the shovel, if it’s like a carpenters hammer or pry bar, you may like to sharpen it from the back so you get a sharp edge as you pry rather than a rounded edge. Thanks for another nice video.
I have been saying for years buy quality buy once. By the way you are a good steward of what god has blessed you with. 👍
I can remember back in the early 60s while in Jr High school metal shop being prompted to clean my file with a card file brush and I still do today even 14 years after I retired as an industrial electrician. My tools stay clean and sharp and the new fellas that I trained in the Navy and on the job would be told " A clean tool is a happy tool "
The watering system is amazing! I thought it was too early for fires but careless people are year round…
As a ditch rider, it is really pretty cool to see these videos
Your field and forest is loving the water. Deep soak was the key. Thanks for the update.
You asked for us to let you know how we like the recordings done on the Iphone, I prefer the camera tbh.
I think the environment your in is far too beautiful to not do it full justice with a nice camera, Some of us live in rather smoggy areas or places without so much wildlife, It's good to come and see the pretty colors and mountains that I could soon plant my feet on one day. So for the phone recordings id prefer it be at a minimum, but of course do what you see fit, I'm grateful for the content either way!
I've learned plenty from ProHo, but maintaining my wooden handles with boiled linseed oil, is up there, for best knowledge transfer. I buy that stuff by the 5 gallon bucket.
Another great video. Thanks for sharing
Awesome video!
You should try a #2 rice shovel. Works great for irrigation work
There are a few prescribed fires near “Mt Fuji”. Your fuel moistures are still pretty high to support a major wildland fire.
A gentleman and a scholar.
This is really cool to watch. Going to take a long time to watch these trees grow. :-)
I learn so much from your channel, thank you.
no idea why, but i love watching the flood irrigation videos
Impressive change.
God bless you brother! your videos are very encouraging and I pray for the fires to cease 🙏❤️
Great content again back to your old style you did many years ago at the old p.ace thanks
It's not good to sprinkle water on the leaves/needles when the sun is in full swing, it causes burning. Love what your doing.
Is that Mount Rainier in the background? Scenery is stunning there.
Wrangler star lore is incredible “ some philistine”. What a phrase for 2024😂
That's some beautiful sod on your property.
Also' nice Alluvial field you have created.
We’ve already got quite a few going in Alberta and Manitoba.
That's a nice Irish shovel!
Love the update! Looking at the size of those trenches you dug...I can't help but think that it would be a great excuse for you and Jack to do some burnouts on the dirtbikes. Drag-launch practice for the sake of irrigation!
Thats great the seedling are starting to green up . I was going to ask if you are going to get you wildland fire gear ready for another year Here in BC we are dealing with large fires already .
Mmmm that chisel ASMR. 🤗
I hope you are putting a metal roof on your cabin to help prevent your roof from catching fire from flying embers. Forget about any cedar shingle roof which is great for roof fires. Unless of course you will install a stand pipe system on your wooden roof for fire suppression. Then you can use your little fire pump trailer and hook it up to your stand pipe system.
I think I could spend days diverting water around. Felt very nice to me.
Glenwood prescribed burn
You take care of yourself and your family too.
I’ll be praying for yall and those fires
You're suppose to file the other direction on left handed shovels.
( You do take care of your equipment🎯😎
Florida man loves Cody's vids
All Proho's word of caution with the boiled linseed oil if you apply with rags, they will combust on their own, so take proper care when discarding. This is pretty common knowledge in the woodworking community, but I was not aware of it as everyday knowledge growing up. Bourbon Moth on YT has a great video where he did a test on it.
You should be careful with any rag with polyurethane, BLO, or many other chemicals / solvents. Friend of mine was refinishing his floors and his pile of rags spontaneously combusted and burnt down his house.
This guy is the Bob Ross of the outdoors
Microphone is performing quite well in the gusty conditions, your audio is great Cody! What do you use?
I use Sennheiser AVX lav,
Looks great, man. Love your channel. I hope my channel will be as inspirational as your channel one day.
day 34 of asking Cody to bring back the amazon videos
best of luck with the fire
Very cool
I’ll take iPhone videos over no video any day, but if you’ve got the time use the dslr for us it definitely make a difference.
God bless
The basic & practical advice for fire tool use & maintenance learned from a few years of government work is much appreciated, but where did that fire shovel come from? The USFS fire warehouse courtesy of the US tax payer? Nearly every forest firefighter usually has his/her personal stash of government fire tools.
Looked like your firewood got irrigated too 😂
Still love giving Cody a hard time about him having every man tool ever made - in double and sometimes triplicate 🤣
That kind of tool acquisition is next level, something every man should strive for, even though most will fail.
Love God and love your nabor
We have been below 30% rh by noon every day for the last 2 weeks. Exception today. Central bc. You gotta be prepared, sir.
Always a pleasure.
Still a little early in the season for fire starts to be much concerned, in your territory. My guess its the Conboy Hq Prescribed Fire
🙂
Did you consider adding another full irrigation trench and dam along that area?
Great job! Now get that wood piles to dry land Wranglerstar Sir.
The shovel sharpening inspired me.
Amein to that. The father knows what we need before we do.
Bro working that shovel shaft like it was a night alone
There doing a lot of prescribed burns in Oregon for the past couple weeks
I truly enjoy your videos. Thank you so much for sharing with us all.
Which camera was used for that walking talking shot at the end? If it was your iPhone, I might just have to go buy one cause it was buttery smooth and great colour
All we have is rain on the east coast Australia
Its a controlled burn near Bend
How resilient are they to being flooded?
Do you recommend sharpening your shovel in rocky country?
genuine question here, would constant water on the roots not be bad for the trees? like cause them to rot?
What brand of shovel (fire tool) is that? I’m ready to buy once cry once.
Genuine Question - when you divert the irrigation at the front of your property to your fields, do you not also divert water away from your neighbours who are downstream?
What if your neighbour upstream diverted to his fields and you had no water?
PROhO are you still using your phone to record or did you switch back to your camera because the quality is good.
odd ball question but what's your option of Wera ratch compared to snap-on? in England there a 1/10 of the price?
People of my generation may look at maintenance of hand tools as "fanaticism", but that's because they do not have any conception of "lifetime tools". They are so used to buying a cheap shovel, using it for a year or so, and discarding it when it inevitably breaks that they have never learned that proper tools can last generations if correctly maintained.
That wood needed a lot of oil!
I love me some Dougy Firs
I don’t know much about trees, is there any worry for too much water?
You could start a rice field lol😊
You made your shovel too sharp. . . Did you find the water line?
amazing the difference that diverted water made
Luckily, that is a controlled burn.
Who makes a good shovel?
Crazy
You can spot a west coast boy a mile away
Wait did you just sharpen a shovel
