  • A step-by-step tutorial on how to paint a sunset in oils by Dutch painter Janhendrik Dolsma. From the colors he uses to his brushes, from the substrate he works on to the steps to follow in the painting process.
    The video contains 4 chapters:
    1. The colors. Dolsma not only shows every color he uses in this painting, but also demonstrates where and how he uses them.
    2. The brushes. The use of each brush is explained and demonstrated.
    3. The substrate. Detailed information about the brand and weight of the paper used.
    4. The steps. A chronological overview of each step in the painting process.
    Dolsma (1950) is an expert painter of clouds, beaches, dunes and of course the ocean. On his CZcams channel he shares a lifetime of painting experience in short tutorial videos with an emphasis on painting clouds. His full length tutorials (over 60 minutes) have found their way to buyers all over the world. Full tutorials can be found here: www.paintingskies.com/video/

    Thank you so much for again generously sharing your expertise. You also give encouragement to those of us who like to paint in layers and glazes. Nowadays there’s so much encouragement to do alla prima work, finish the full painting in an hour or two with lots of heavy paint texture that it’s good to see beauty created this way, too. Thank you!

    • @PaintingSkies1
      @PaintingSkies1  Před 2 lety +1

      Thank you, Patricia! I'm really pleased to hear my videos are an encouragement. And yes, you're right, alla prima work is sometimes considered as intrinsically better than glazing, probably because of the modern emphasis on spontaneity and visible brushwork. I'll just keep layering.

Your sharing of the step-by-step process of selecting, mixing and applying the paint has been in other videos, but not presented all together like this one. Many, many thanks my friend. Hope you are in good health and that you and the cats are enjoying good weather in Holland. We are experiencing our wettest spring ever here in Oregon. All the best,

    Even though your paintings is a mess up close, they most certainly is amazing from a distans. I wish i could paint seascapes like that, but when i try, i think my paintings look to comic book and not realistic. The sky is not a problem, it´s the rest.

    • @PaintingSkies1

      I know what you mean. Clouds give a painter lots of freedom, while landscape elements need a more exact rendering. I did a tutorial on painting waves that may be of interest to you: czcams.com/video/WjJmIixBH1g/video.html (CZcams trailer). For landscape elements like grasses and bushes I often use my most ragged brushes: czcams.com/video/NQHiavWH41g/video.html. Hope this helps!

    A warm hello from Southeast Michigan, USA! We are finally having a warm trend and it feels great! Thank you for describing in such detail the steps you are taking and your thoughts on your reasoning for these. One of those details that I was grateful for was the placement of the reflections in the water. I love seeing your kitties, they are so precious. I am very glad to see that you are safe and look well. Did you know that here in the States they are beginning to offer cadmium free paints? I haven't purchased any as of yet, I wonder if they will perform the same as their counterparts. I still have to stay in except for the occasional ride or doctors appointment. I am at high risk for the virus, I have all my shots. So good to see you, stay safe, and healthy. I can hardly wait for the next video already. :)

      When I'm doing smaller paintings, I like to sit by the window, but for the large panels I use a wall-mounted easel and then I rely on artificial light. It gets pretty close to daylight actually.
