  • People keep asking me to film a catch and cook fishing video. I have made a few on this channel but not often. Anyhow, last nights video was the catch, and this one is the cook.
In this video I will teach you exactly how to fillet redfin, or perch, and how to prepare and cook redfin perch.

Hey Chris thanks so much mate. I learnt from my father as well. He usually carves around the ribcage, even on smaller fish, but I prefer to cut straight through them.

    Absolutely brilliant
There are tons of clips on how to catch fish but not enough about how to enjoy them on the plate. After all isn’t it why we fish . Simple and to the point.

I agree with the last comment about the butter , much heathier , they told us lies when we were kids. Also you can cut the fins off near the head when you cut the head off, but you probably knew that. Also I cut the other fins near the back, off buy tearing them off backwards with a knife , try it it's easier.

Word of advice for ‘manky’ cutting boards. Buy a pack of those Milton tablets for baby bottle sterilisation. Soak them for a few hours and the smell will go away. And yes I agree that a good filleting technique will still get a fish finger from a small Redfin. My filleting differs from yours in that I don’t gut them or cut the head off, but rather take the fillets off the whole fish. (I was taught by an ex pro fisherman). Just a whole lot of less steps when you become competent with a knife, and that helps with an Adam Gilchrist cricket score of Redfin to clean. Also if you struggle to make a clean incision on the second fillet ( because the fish is missing one side), you can actually start the filleting cuts on both sides of the fish before removing the first fillet. This will help prevent the ‘the first fillet came off well but I destroyed the other side’ dilemma.

Totally enjoy your channel Robbie. But, margarine? Use butter. If you think it'll burn then add a little olive oil first. Never, never, never use margarine.

Spot on mate, not necessary if you skin the fish anyway as the scales come off with the skin.
