Introduction is by my Mom, Uncle Joe 92 years old and Aunty Peggy 89 years. The video was produced in 1987 and shows New Brighton before some of the major changes. I hope you enjoy.
Probably one of the most important historical clips of the later part of the 20th Century. The clip has been shared on our Wallasey Memories Facebook Group and is being enjoyed by many. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much for uploading this! 2021 now... I was 9 years old in 1987 and moved away from the Wirral at 18 years old. Family still in Trammere, but this is how I remember New Brighton! the new place just does not hold the memories, but this video brought it all back. Sunday drives up to New Brighton from Trammere. The old baths.... the arcades and the sounds coming from them. If we were lucky we may get some candyfloss. The little boating pond with people with their model boats... the wind basting in and the waves hitting the path to the fort. Adventure land in which we would go there for the afternoon. Parents sat reading papers while us kids ran around and played on the slides and what was left of the old fun house with the crazy mirrors and the moving floor and ball-pond. Roy thanks for sharing this and letting us experience those memories once again.
Going to be there in a few weeks time still a beautiful place to visit, just standing watching the shipping go in and out of the Mersey is so relaxing, bit of useless information my grandfather played in goal for new brighton roughly 100 years ago
Wow. Thank you for this. I was up there yesterday and my 10 year old asked me what new Brighton used to be like. He was made up with this. So much better than just looking at photos.
Brilliant I was in my 20s then I went to the night clubs there I remember it all I tell my kids what it was like especially when I park up for our dinner from Morrisons.
I remember the Golden Goose, full of 1d one arm bandits when we were kids visiting family in Wallasey. Took my kids up in 02 and the place seemed to have become a go kart plaza. Hard to think that way back, when the golden sands were in place before breakwaters were put in and washed them all away there was a tower taller than Blackpools in place!
Love at the end when the video goes to another day out but had been recorded over. Second time I watched this video... Watched it years ago. It's mad how things change. There was f all there back then. A simple day out. Run down though. Is it better now... I would say yes but it they get rid of the arcade it will be a pointless place.
I found this really interesting. I was a baby when this was filmed and grew up newbo in the 90s .it was a pretty grim place back then if I'm honest. Glad to see how the area have improved over the last few years.
I remember that! Wasn't it called New Brighton Rock? I remember watching the concert on the tv! I think they done a similar one the following year in Liverpool, that was called Rock around the Dock!
Seemour Butts : Not in Lpool but across the river, ⛴ used to call there ! Used to have golden sands until some fool put in breakwaters and the sands washed away within weeks. Also had a tower like that at Blackpool but even taller !
The Grand Hotel @ 0:40 seconds ;) Still cannot believe they pulled the Old girl down ;( And @ 2:22 the Old Chelsea Reach Night Club ;) And finally the 3 sisters Power Station @ 3:48 All bygone times sadly ;(
Hi I think I recognise your Aunt Peggy. Did she ever live in Woolton? I think your family might have been my neighbours in the 60's and 70's. I remember Peggy, you Roy and Paul? Or is it a case of mistaken identity
Amazing video I mean New Brighton has changed....eeerr a bit since then..i mean the hotel Vic has gone....fantastic carvery...Erm theres a morrisons..no decent fair...if you look at the fact that they brought Trams back to Birkenhead...why not use the wasteland from Moreton Shore to New Brighton for a Tram ride...They've tidied it up Great but its Ghost Town What a joke...shame...Lovely Video
+SuperBlueboy61 I agree, and now it's a shite shopping complex like everything else these days. Lot of good memories of NB back in the 80's, I don't have any now lol
So little has changed until you arrive in New Brighton. On the route there is now no Twenty Row Inn (now Lidl supermarket). Mobiles have of course eliminated red telephone boxes. The cars have moved on. Other than that it is more or less as it was.
vix pix - I think you need to read what I have actually said. "ON THE ROUTE" to New Brighton the Twenty Row Inn has become Lidl. Wallasey Village is on the route to New Brighton (not New Brighton itself). Additionally, I said so little has changed "UNTIL" you arrive in New Brighton. Meaning - on arrival in New Brighton people will find a lot has changed.
I have lived in Wallasey for nearly 46 years since 1972 when my family moved here from Irby when I was a kid. My reply to you was not questioning your knowledge of the area - but to point out to you that your interpretation of my original comment was wrong. Eg. "ON ROUTE" to New Brighton is NOT New Brighton itself. And I am fully aware New Brighton has changed a lot. But you don't notice that UNTIL you actually get there !
I hate the huge boulders that have spoiled the New Brighton and Morecambe beaches... The whole atmosphere of the seaside town seems to have been lost to modern 'landscaping', which seems to have appeared around the same time as ugly ghetto blasters and ugly trainers.
All by design and deliberate IMO. The excuse I think for the boulders is for sea defences from flooding, or so they tell us. Another thing I hate, which I don't New Brighton has (not yet anyway) is all those weird looking metal structures, I think Southport and Blackpool have a few dotted about (metal balls). Very ugly and souless looking.
are yes the sweet smell of candy floss mixed in with chappy dog food infused dog shit and Saturday night clubin piss a treat to the nostrils those were the days
watching this old footage you could almost smell the the mersey oh thats the dog shit if you look not that hard you can see and make out patterns of shoe shit skids and buggie wheel shit tracking on pavements made of bubblegum as then is now
Are you kidding? New Brighton was better than it is now from around 1890 - 1960. After that it went into decline, just like every other British seaside resort. I remember New Brighton in 1987, when this video was filmed, and it was not better than it is now. In the summer it'd be moderately busy. In the winter it was a windswept ghost town. The New Brighton Baths, once so proud and grand, were a flaking, crumbling tragedy. If they'd been maintained and remained popular they would have been great, and I was as sad as anyone when a storm conveniently inflicted "irreparable damage" on them, finally giving the Council the excuse to bring the bulldozers in, but they weren't. They were almost always empty. The arcades on Victoria Road, which somebody else is reminiscing about in these comments, were sleazy and dim. There was a grimy Lo-Cost supermarket in the sad husk of a former cinema. Boarded-up cafes. A betting shop. It was a depressing place. New Brighton is clearly not what it was in its heyday, but please let's not allow our memories of the recent past to be so rose-tinted that we don't appreciate what we have now!
Phil Stratford a bit late in the day I live in new Brighton and in the 80s it was a right shit tip especially Vicky road everywhere was boarded up I wish these morons would take their rose coloured specs off
Growing up in New Brighton in the 80’s, the only nostalgia I have is for depressing run down tacky seaside towns, but I don’t know if that is a good thing....
Its Much better now than it was then. I think newbo in 80s and 90s probably close to it's lowest the area has ever been .its good that they in recent years have finally started to invest in the area.

that was absolutely fabulous. I remember the Ceasars palace arcade and the Golden Goose at the bottom of the famous Victoria Road. Sadly all gone now.
iwmoz : The GG, yes, full of 1d one armed bandits (60's).
Sorry about that lost the music, when I converted the file to WMV.
RIP NewBrighton
It was a disgrace, when the baths got demolished.Art deco building, that was!
SuperBlueboy61 I thought a storm caused to much damage and the pool cracked?
despotmurgatroid No,it was a listed building and should of been repaired but the council sold it off,the wooden seats inside were solid oak!
SuperBlueboy61
Thats awefull, I loved it there as a kid and we used to catch the Royal Iris for the river cruise disco - happy memories.
despotmurgatroid The good old days,i lived in liscard and we would go to harrison drive as a kid,we had a chalet there!

Liverpool looks so flat with no sky scrappers!
That's because the only sky scrappers back then were on Netherfield Road , Everton on the hill , where i lived ;)
Now there's a Morrisons and other crap shops and pubs. Could be anywhere. Southport went the same way...
Too many of the copy and paste retail complexes with Costa's for those who have too much money to burn.
I jumped in to The Marine Lake fully dressed in my leather jacket and army boots and i couldn`t swim
Not “improvements”?
old guy looks like mr herbert from family guy
