  • Let's talk about calipers. They are devices used to measure the dimensions of an object with typical accuracy of 0.02-0.05 mm. In first part of this video I will talk about main parts and how to use calipers, and this part is independent of the type. In second part I will explain how to read values on calipers, and this is different on dial, digital and vernier caliper. Most devices I have are metric, but from images I will explain how to read imperial calipers too.

Excellent video ! The Vernier reminds me of the log sliding rules.

I have the Parkside one, it's great and cheap, from Lidl supermarket . But, sometimes, when we open it very fast, there is an error.

Yes, that's the disadvantage of those cheap relative reading calipers. They works great, until you are not "too fast".

Another advantage of the digital calipers is that they can do simple math very easily since you can zero in on any value and get positive and negative readings from it

My biggest frustration with digital imperial calipers is the fractional display can't be tounded to reasonable fractions.
If you want to quickly measure a bolt head for example to see what socket you need...instead of being able to display the closest 1/16" for example on a 9/16" head...the display will show 143/256" or something similar and you have to do the math to see that 9/16" is the correct socket.

I know how to use them, but watched your video anyway - and I know somethning new. Imperial units are way dumber than I thought they are, and I drive US cars on daily basis so can relate. :P

The division of the inch into fractions of is actually the one smart part of the system. For certain applications but mostly in carpentry. Like dividing a part into equal sections of 2/4/6 etc.

dial caliper with 0.01mm precision is easier to read then 0.02mm
