  • Tom Robinson interviewed by William Brougham about his song Glad to be Gay in 2017.
Originally written for London Gay Pride in 1976, it was released in 1978 with the Tom Robinson Band on the group's EP Rising Free. Although the song was banned by radio stations, it still got into the top 20 charts.
Expertly interviewed by Brougham, Tom discusses in detail the social and political background to the song, the power of protest songs, and the enduring popularity of this anthem.
He has updated the lyrics many times over the years so that the protest stays current and relevant. The different versions are documented on the Glad To Be Gay website, with the references in each version explained.
