I recall when my father died on December 31, 1994, I was so grieved in my spirit, and as I sat in the parking lot of a major shopping mall waiting for my children to come out of the movie theater, I had the radio on, I began to cry, suddenly this song began to play. I know it was the Lord who had the radio DJ. to play this song in order to encourage me during this trial. Thank God Jesus Loves Us and He really Cares. What a Friend We Have in Jesus!! Very encouraging song.

Geraldine, I hope you see this. Believe me when I tell you, the SAME thing happened to me. I was the last person in the funeral home when my brother died. The funeral director knew that was my brother that died. It was closing time and he told me to take as long as I needed. While I stood over his body weeping, this song played over their sound system. He’s a very present help in trouble.

I have heard several versions of He's That Kind of Friend by Tremaine, but never heard it sang like she did for Bishop Hawkins homegoing. Her whole heart was felt and her spirit resounded into mine. So Memorable!
She has stated that though "Changed" and "Goin Up Yonder" were more popular, "He's That Kind of Friend" is her personal favorite.
Regardless to how you view Bishop Hawkins. He was definitely a vessel used for God's purpose. The songs he wrote were not of him but of God. Songs of Zion, songs of comfort, songs of encouragement, songs of praise, songs of worship. God will use whom he pleases to get the word to the unsaved and to remind the saved. I don't know what pact Bishop had with the Lord, that's between them, but I do know if it weren't for songs like Change, Full & Complete, He's That Kind of Friend, The Potter's House, Never Alone, there's no telling where I would be. Those songs along with learning how to trust God and accept Him in my life are the reason I'm alive spiritually. No one is perfect so, we need to quit putting man on pedestals instead of putting them at the feet of God, pray for them and if it helps, close your eyes so you won't see the messenger so you'll hear the word. I tell my children all the time, the best testimony is from someone who has gone through something.
He was truly a vessel for God and I am so grateful for his gift! His music walked me through my recovery from my addictions and still keeps me clean 15 years later!

I knew Mr. Hawkins and with to school with his half sister name Carol. Hawkins My wife(rip) knew Tramaine and Walter's sister who married my best friend. Bishop Hawkins was ahead of his time as writer of gospel music, what he did in the 1970's..gospel singers are JUST NOW doing. Bishop Hawkins is a legend in his our TIME..he's TIMELESS as is GOD IS TIMELESS. Bishop Hawkins presided over the Love Center Church which was questionable in other holy than thou folks as an legitimate church? Bishop Hawkins was about God's GRACE, God's forgiveness and promoting the love of GOD's LOVE for all people. He was and will be an astounding MAN OF GOD, and I was blessed and fortune to have known the Bishop and the Hawkins family.

The first time I heard this song, I was about seven years old. The young adult choir sang this at my church practically every other week when they sang. I NEVER got tired of hearing it. Some 40 years later, the song has even more meaning today.

I growed up in a little church in Redwood City EMS on Methodist Church in this big choir came to our church I guess who it was Bishop Hawkins I tell you I am 62 years old come 24th and November 1958 and this choir stayed on my mind as I am and my middle age going up yonder on my Lord as me being a little girl screaming oh yeah I want to see this Sunday that day was a beautiful day. Know that God was in the house and we was praising his name and it's beautiful Minister came in and says I'm going to give you youth choir something you will always remember A change is going to come going up yonder oh my God you know God is always on time when he brings back these beautiful memories I can only say I still will praise thee sonce in the name of God and the songs that this man has wrote the share with the whole world and me going to be 62 and remember it's beautiful words of wisdom and strength and faith and praise praising God thank you so much for sharing this with me

I used to get physically and verbally assaulted daily by everyone including my family. The song was single reason why did not end my own life. I used to listen to it alone in my bedroom every day and cry. It gave me so much hope.
