It wouldn't do anything since hoppers can't suck through full-height blocks such as dirt. Either hopper minecarts would have to be used or partial-height blocks such as slabs, soul sand, or mud.

Lui nailed the jump despite jumping from the sign, if I recall correctly. Mumei also made the jump, but I think that was before Botan put the sign up.
