  • On May 1, 1986, Leonard announced on a Washington, D.C. talk show that he would return to the ring to fight Hagler. The announcement generated a lot of controversy because of Leonard's inactivity and eye injuries, yet it also excited many sports fans who had hoped to see them fight years earlier. Hagler took a few months to decide, then agreed to the match. The fight was promoted as "The Super Fight" and Leonard was guaranteed $11 million. Leonard was awarded a controversial split-decision.Jim Murray, long-time sports columnist for the Los Angeles Times, wrote, "It wasn't even close...He didn't just outpoint Hagler, he exposed him. He made him look like a guy chasing a bus. In snowshoes.... Leonard repeatedly beat Hagler to the punch. When he did, he hit harder. He hit more often.... He made Hagler into what he perceived him to be throughout his career-a brawler, a swarmer, a man who could club you to death only if you stood there and let him. If you moved, he was lost."
Often regarded as one of the greatest boxers of all time, he competed from 1977 to 1997, winning world titles in five weight divisions; the lineal championship in three weight divisions;] as well as the undisputed welterweight title. Leonard was part of "The Fabulous Four", a group of boxers who all fought each other throughout the 1980s, consisting of himself, Roberto Durán, Thomas Hearns and Marvin Hagler.
Leonard is also the godfather of Khloé Kardashian and has appeared on many episodes of Keeping Up With The Kardashians.
In his autobiography The Big Fight: My Life in and out of the Ring, published in June 2011, Leonard reveals that as a young boxer he was the victim of sexual abuse from an Olympic trainer as well as another man, a benefactor. He has since made public appearances to bring attention to the issue of child sex abuse, declaring himself a "poster child" for the cause and encouraging victims to report their abuse.

Ali was "one of the most" accessible athletes ever, if not "the most" accessible, he took the advice of trainer Angelo Dundee, to be accommodating to the press...they can be your friends or, enemies, it depends on you, he said to a young Cassius Clay in the early 60s, as he was beginning his rise in the rankings.

Were you watching the fight ?
Haggler won that fight. You can't win a fight punching someone's gloves and running away for 90% of the fight. The commentator at ringside and boxers on the commentary team, said exactly the same thing. Leonard creates more box office, Full Stop.

    • @richardweiler6931
      @richardweiler6931 Před 9 měsíci +3

@@CityBoy5705 when it was over, I had no doubt Leonard won. You're a guy who is apparently impressed by aggressiveness. You like the guy who comes forward. That's good enough for you. I like the fighter who lands the cleaner, more effective shots. I don't care if he's backing up or fighting off the ropes. Landing punches is all that matters. And that's what Leonard did. Telltale sign is at the final bell. Leonard immediately climbs the ropes and is joyous. He knows that he won. Hagler just turns and looks angry. Upset. Crestfallen. He knows that he lost. Leonard was the general in the ring. He dictated the pace of the bout. Hagler just ineffectively followed him around and played the part of Leonard's foil. No matter how many times I watch it, Leonard comes out the winner. Even Gil Clancy called Leonard "the miracle man." He knew who won that fight, just like I did. Try watching it again...this time with an open mind.

Leonard ran away from Hagler for most of that fight in Las Vegas in 1987, after requesting and being given a larger ring and 12 rounds instead of the usual 15 rounds. Leonard's manager, the criminal Don King bribed the fight judges and had a bet on Leonard to win. I watched the entire fight and when I heard the decision for Leonard, I knew Hagler had been robbed.
After that fight the "running chickenshit Leonard" had to check into the hospital for undisclosed reasons.
Hagler was an honest and unassuming man, who had no big connections in the boxing world, and had to do things the hard way, fighting more than 50 fights before he was given a shot at the championship title.
I knew Hagler from Boston, and he was "Boston's boxer", hailing from Brockton Mass., where the great Rocky Marciano was from.
We loved Marvelous Marvin in Boston. RIP, Mr. Marvin Hagler.
PS: The first rule of fighting and boxing is "you never win a fight by running away from your opponent", unless of course, Don King has a bet on you to win.

I would have had more respect for SRL as a fighter if he would have fought Hagler when they were both in their prime, when the fight was about to get signed up SRL retired due to a damaged eye retina - and stated he would never be able to fight again - yet as he watched Hagler getting slower some yrs later he all of a sudden could fight again, i think this is were boxing lost its way, someone could just come out of retirement and fight for a world title, while other fighters who have been slugging away in the rankings to earn the title shot get pushed to one side - Hagler won that fight BTW !

The smart idea of “Stolen rounds” just going all out in the last seconds of each round made SRL on the eyes of the judges a winner. Smart counts on all sport and it is an edge..it is not ilegal what he did. Marvin Hagler corner should have noticed that and should have instructed him to fight even more on the last seconds of each round.
I watched the five on live TV and right after the fight I was thinking that SRL won but I watched the reply the day after and I change my mind. I watched for a third time and I was thinking a draw was more right in my eyes and that would have made Marvin Hagler retaining the middle weight crown.
I also noticed that after the fight SRL was a fresher fighter and like Marvin their faces were unmarked. Meaning there were not power punches were landed.
I considered Marvin Hagler one of the best Middle weight champions of the world that should have been a champion much younger but nobody want to giving him an opportunity when he was younger.

After epic battles with Tommy Hearns and John Mugabi, Marvin was slowing down and you could see it. Leonard saw it in the Mugabi fight and knew this was his chance. He fought for a point victory and never intended to mix it up with Marvin....who would have ripped his head off.

Ray Leonard was the Golden Goose who laid the golden egg when comes to the dollar bill. When it comes the great welterweights, Aaron Pryor was the greatest welterweight of them all and that is why Ray and Thomas Hearns ducked him. Sugar Ray Leonard you have come a long way baby. The real story that Ray does not tell relating to his Rags to Riches story: He was born in NC lived in NW DC in his early years. He then moved to Palmer Park, Maryland. He is a great rags to riches story. He won the Gold Medal in the 1976 Olympic Games. He arrived home to Palmer Park expecting a ticker tape parade, instead he received a scalding from local media for having a baby out of wed lock with girlfriend Quanita. Ashamed he hid in his house and refuse to come out. He had lost his self esteen. One day I am hanging out in Anacostia Park playing tennis and I look out from the tennis courts and I see his trainer Janks Morton and my friend the late great Melvin Weasel Jackson looking in. I leave the courts to find out what was going on, because baseball was their game. It was then they explained to me that Ray refused to come out of the house. I was then asked to go and talk to him and try to convince him to check his ego and self esteen at the door and ignore the media. Those were tuff times financially and Ray didn't have two pennies to rub together. He was confused and had no one to turn to--enter Harold Bell. The following morning I went to Palmer Park and knocked on his door. He answered with tears in his eyes looking all pitifull. I use some choice words and convinced him to put his clothes on and suggested that he put his Gold Meldal around his neck. We were off to Harrison Elementary School in NW DC. I alerted my friend the Principal Mr. Cousins that I was on the way with Ray and to find him a class to speak to. The setting was perfect, elementary school children did not have the same player-hating and evious jealousy traits as we adults. All they could see was the Olympic Boxing champion that their Principal called a hero. The rest is boxing history--Sugar RayLeonard went on to become the first pro boxer to earn over 100 million dollars. Ray co-hosted my sports talk show "Inside Sports" before his 15 minutes of fame. This is a little known Black History fact.😎

+ manos3790 Hearns wasn't nowhere close to his mature self when he met Pryor as novice. Pro Hearns KO's small fries too easy. Hearns leverage was too long for shorties. Pryor fighting mature Hearns would of been liken to Duran/Hearns but the KO would of came much faster and easier.
Pryor kills Money Mayweather; yes a man of his same stature. Big, fast, and vicious super heavy welterweights like SRL and Hearns who shrink down to welterweight/147lbs for the fight scale...But by fight night they're back up to 157lbs or more, and you pit them with lightweights?... either you're new to boxing or you don't give care about the game to make such a statement.
Pryor or Money Mayweather would gotten mopped off the kitchen floor by SRL and especially Thomas Hearns. Not that Hearns was better than SRL but to the fact that super short guys that were technical fighters were made to order for Hearns.

He connected at a higher percentage and landed at a higher rate. No knock out? Gotta go to the score cards. Sugar Ray was clearly the winner because he was more active. @@zja1441 I know it hurts bruh, but Hagler was staggering several times later in that fight from being winded. Dont get me wrong... Marvelous Marvin had amazing endurance (probably the best at the time - behind Sugar Ray Leonard)... but I don't care who you are, if you spend most of a fight trying to land power knockout shots, you goin 'get tired. Once again, if Hagler tried to go punch for punch using power shots to Ray's flurries, Hagler would've tired out in about the six or seventh round. He would have either got knocked out (don't down play Leonard's knockout power) or he would have put enough pressure on Leonard to knock Sugar Ray out (before the seventh). Once Sugar Ray showed he could weather or escape Haglers onslaught after the 7th, that was it. Leonard was just too busy. Hagler's only avenue to victory was a knockout because of his style, which he couldn't secure against Leonard. He never had Leonard hurt enough where Sugar Ray didn't look like he wasn't still challenging Hagler for dominance of the ring. Judges don't score fights on how painful a punch is (unless it causes potential fight ending injury or a knock out). No knockouts, both fighters still fighting, gotta go to punch count.

Anyone who watches that fight can clearly see that Ray was the better man that night and he did everything that he said he would do and that was out box Marvin. Marvin’s game plan was to bust Ray up and knock him out and he didn’t. He even said that the fight didn’t have to or it wouldn’t go 12 rounds and it did. He also let Ray have the bigger ring because he thought that he could cut the ring off with no problem. As well as it would be very dangerous for Ray to allow Marvin to pin him on the ropes because that’s where Marvin would do the his best work and the most damage. But when it happened Marvin couldn’t keep him there and Ray most times got the better of the exchanges whether on the ropes or in the middle of the ring. That’s why when it was all said and done you the announcer say, “ and new middle weight champion of the world !” Sugar Ray Leonard ! 🤷🏾‍♂️🥊✌🏾

Sugar OUTHOUGHT Marvin.....using angles, pacing, and overall ring generalship....Marvin was a great fighter, no doubt, but on this night, Sugar was greater.....

My brother and I both watched this bout with scored cards but never revealed our numbers until after the final bell.
I had Hagler winning by one round, and my brother had Ray winning by 3 rounds. We argued!
The next day, I saw the boxing media were split 50-50 as to who really deserved the decision.
People still debate this bout. I wonder if anybody even still remembers any Floyd Mayweather bouts.

Guys saying ray running from hagler, why dont you try counting the points each round and see who out pointed who ,hagler even knew he lost with that lame dance at end of fight ,say what you want but ray is only one I seen where hagler wasnt hagler

Watch the fight without the bias commentary. Ray made Marvin miss, but Marvin also deflected or ray punched his gloves a lot of the time. Ray's speed makes it look clean, but he didn't hit him as clean or at all a lot of the time. Hagler was the aggressor and hurt and shook Leonard, Ray never really did that. I think it was closer to a draw because to beat a champ you have to be decisive. I actually think Hagler won it, Ray was just better playing to the crowd.

@@Sharkgiant445 Leonard landed more punches by official stats and made Hagler miss. Was close and i respect Hagler but the great Sugarman win
