  • Thanks to the hard work of glitch hunters like merrp and Sleipnir17, we now have FULL ACCESS to Arbitrary Code Execution in Pokemon Emerald. merrp originally discovered the use of Pokemon 0x0611 to do ACE in the game, and it completely turned the speedrun upside down. Since then, Sleipnir has developed an insane library of codes to do basically anything you can imagine. These glitches let you unlock mystery gift events, respawn legendaries, change your TID\SID, manipulate the RNG, teleport anywhere, and MUCH MUCH MORE.
You can find merrp's original documentation on their pastebin:
    pastebin.com/u...
You can find all Sleipnir's codes on his pastebin:
    pastebin.com/u...
Subscribe to Sleipnir's CZcams channel as well, this was an insane amount of effort and he deserves literally all the credit.

Thank you SO MUCH to everyone associated with Glitch City Labs for their work on this game over the years. I couldn't possibly thank everyone, but at the very least I can make more people aware of what's possible in this incredible game.

    **NEW UPDATED GUIDE** : czcams.com/video/45kwOEhKbUg/video.html
**IF HATCHING EGG DOES NOTHING OR CRASHES THE GAME**
Did you make sure your Boxes 11-14 are empty?
Also make sure to type all the spaces, and double check your lefty
ighty quotes, as well as zero vs Capital O, and 1s or lowercase Ls.
Sleipnir also mentioned something about Pokemon Box, or Transferring to Gen 4. Apparently Pal Park/Box leaves some ghost data in the boxes.
It appears you can clear the ghost data (which should only matter in boxes 11-14) by filling up the boxes with Pokemon, saving, moving the Pokemon out of the boxes, and saving again.
If that doesn't work, your EV spread on DOTS might have gotten messed up. Has happened to me before... I've done 16 HP / 7 Atk. instead of the correct 17 HP / 6 Atk
Also check your DOTS and make sure it didn't catch Pokerus during training. Pokerus doubles EV gains from battle, so that would lead to an incorrect egg. For safety, only battle with DOTS using Pokemon who DON'T have Pokerus, so it doesn't spread to him.

I usually never comment on YT vids, but I really felt that I had to share just how significant the discovery of this glitch is to me personally. Its a bit of a read, but the tl;dr is that this glitch allows me to get a Pokemon I was never able to as a child and I am beyond grateful for that...
Back when I was a child, I had collected every Pokemon in Emerald that could be obtained legitimately. I had literally every single Pokemon except event exclusives. I managed to get the Toys R Us Wishmaker CD for Jirachi as well as a Mew from Mall of America. Other than Celebi (Whom had never had an official US release at that point) I had all 385 Pokemon on my Emerald cartridge, all except for one: Deoxys. My parents were divorced growing up and I lived with my mother when the Deoxys event was announced. Despite my father not living with us he had promised to take me to get Deoxys event, which back then was the only possible way to get one. Long story short, my parents got into an argument and my dad cancelled the plan of taking me to get Deoxys. As dumb as it may sounds to admit, this was an incredibly traumatic event for me and one that completely devastated me at the time.
For years I hoped there might be some other way to get Deoxys. I tried everything I could find on any and all Pokemon forums on the internet. I even maxed out my in-game clock to 999:99 and beat the Elite 4 over 100 times because the was a rumor that if you did that you could go to the Mossdeep Space Center and get Deoxys. Again a ridiculous thing to share, but hopefully it shows just how desperate I was to get one and how badly I wanted there to be some other way. Fast forward to a couple of years ago when I watched a video of the Pomeg glitch and saw somebody use it to warp to Faraway island. I thought this glitch had potential, but that it was too specific and not documented well enough to truly get event items. Ever a purist, I still wished that I didn't have to just warp to Deoxys and could actually experience the event as intended, with no GameShark and with the actual event item in-tow.
I know there will be those that thumb their nose at the thought of glitches, those that see it all as cheating regardless, and honestly I had been that way for the longest time. However, now that I and these games are much older, I've come to the point where I've relaxed my personal belief as to what constitutes "cheating" and "legitimacy" as far as Pokemon and video games in general are concerned. Games are ultimely meant to be enjoyed, and as long you're enjoying yourself that's all that really matters. Also, the fact is that there really is zero difference between an event Pokemon generated in this way compared to getting one from a real event, other than one of these methods requiring a time machine lol.
I know this is really long comment and kudos if you've read it through to the end. This may just seem like a neat little arbitrary gIitch of a long outdated game to most, but it is so much more than that to me. I cannot fully put into words how much it means to me to be able to take that same cartridge from all those years ago and finally get that event Deoxys that, for so long, I had felt fate had cheated from me. Bless the absolute geniuses within the Pokemon community for their continued dedication in finding exploits like this one, and bless you for making this simple to understand video tutorial. Truly, thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

Anyways, I hope you enjoy your deoxys. It was an honor reading your comment , from one person who never comments to another . I always wanted to be just like you and have all the event pokemon. I never got a single one cause I was growing up in a poor household, I look back and am happy my parents managed to get me a gameboy and these pokemon games at all. Not too long before I had a gameboy my family and I were digging inside of dumpsters looking for nourishment. When I played any pokemon game I always did my best to be the ultimate trainer. @@l0lan00b3 To put it simply, yes. You can imagine the randomness of the games to be very big wheel of fortune, that starts spinning as soon as you boot up your game. When the battery runs dry, the game has no "sense of time" anymore and each start is perfectly identical, so we know where the wheel starts and how fast it spins every single time.
If we can trigger an encounter at a very specific time after resetting/booting the game at a very specific time, we can make the wheel stop exactly where we know a desired outcome will be.
As all starts are identical, the only variable we need to tweak is the reset time, which makes the game start the wheel at different positions - of course, we choose a position that makes the wheel stop at the position we want (i.e. shiny Mew) seconds later.

The fact that in Diamond and Pearl you can literally just ride your bike back and forth and glitch out the loading trigger for the next area, go out-of-bounds, and then just WALK to any of the event areas you want, is crazy to me. Granted, Arceus's event area gets glitched out with that method and you get stuck there permanently without even being able to catch Arceus, but all the other event areas work fine. And you can just do a different glitch to get the Arceus event item anyway.

@@Sleipnir17 Hey, I'm a student learning computer science and I wanted to ask you a question. I'm at the beginning of my degree and we just learned risc-v assembly. I was quite good at it. I noticed your code is assembly code. How does the assembly instructions translate to the box names you're generating, if you don't kind me asking. Sorry if it's too long an explanation.

    • @Sleipnir17
      @Sleipnir17 Před 2 lety +10

@@joshurlay Hi. First, it seems right to tell you that I have no computer science background so the following might be quite crude, nonetheless I should be able to answer to your question.
As you noticed all codes for ACE start an assembly code but to the right of each instruction you can see a 32 bit (or 16 bit for some Japanese codes) value, which is the hexadecimal for that assembly opcode. This is the machine language code used by the GBA, which is able to use two different machine languages: ARM (32 bit) and THUMB (16 bit).
Going from hexadecimal to box names is rather simple, you just replace each byte wjth the corresponding character, making sure to account for endianness.
The real challenge lies here: there are far less than 255 different characters on non-Japanese games so the pool of different bytes you can use is quite limited, thus the resulting assmebly opcodes pool is also limited and managing to write what you want can be tricky, expecially if you want to fit the whole code in one box names set. Writing THUMB codes is pretty much impossibile, that's why you always see ARM codes for non-Japanese. There's more.
In each code you see several filler codes. There's of course a reason for that: each box name is terminated with a 0xFF byte so you'll have multiple opcodes with a fixed FF which might be useless and thus is skipper with a filler code, something that is not executed because of conditions usually. It's not over
Every execution starts in one of the last slots of box 11, it then goes through all the empty slots and starts reading the actual code. If you don't somehow tell the processor to stop it will go past box names and keep executing, untill the inevitabile crash will stop it. To avoid that we use an exit code, which will perform a jump to a safe ROM area where the processor will be able to keep its regular flow. That's what the Pokédex diploma does (there also are other exit codes you can use). The exit code usually takes up to half of the useful space.
This are all the basics I think, feel free to ask for more if you want

Funny story; I had the national dex at 385 caught Pokémon, only missing Mew for the 100% completion diploma. I followed the whole process shown here (first time ever hearing about pomeg glitch or glitzer poppin) so I thought I’d try and replicate the steps demonstrated in the video and actually got 3 good nest ball eggs on my first try… HOWEVER I made a mistake on the first ‘ of the box code. So I hatched the egg and the diploma showed up, but when I talked to the guy in the PC he just tells me how many times I saved… I seriously thought it was all over almost threw my old game boy out the window until something subconsciously told me to simply double check the code I input. (also was mentioned in the video) Long story short there’s a moral somewhere here about following directions especially when you don’t know what you’re doing, but anyway here’s a special thanks to everyone involved in arbitrary code execution from the rest of us that have little to no idea what the heck is going on. Two questions, if I wanted to do a different glitch, like setting the navel rock or the birth Island mystery gift, do I do the exact same setup as this just with different box names?
Also, when you release that final glitch guy at the end, is that the last remnants of any data corruption on your copy?

Yup! You just use a different box code, and hatch the egg. Sometimes codes have specific instructions, like where to do it. So make sure to check.
And yeah, if you de-clone the Bad Eggs and release the Glitch Mon that hatches, you're clean. Surprisingly, if you DO still have Glitch Mons\Bad Eggs, the game won't let you use Pokemon Box... not that many people have or use Pokemon Box, but I do... and so I have a clean Emerald on my legit cart, and then a dirty Emerald on a bootleg cart 🤣
I didn't include it in this video, because its much more advanced. But you can avoid hatching eggs altogether by executing a series of codes and getting your hands on a special stable Glitch mon called 0x40E9 that can activate the ACE just by looking at the summary. Super OP, but then you have to live with a few permanent glitch mons in your box.

The stuff you can do with Emerald alone just keeps getting crazier and crazier. I remember being mind blown just because of the cloning glitch many years ago. Being able to run arbitrary code via Box names feels nothing short of but a fever dream, but here we are in 2022. I'm pretty confident to say Pokemon Emerald is the most fun Pokemon game to exploit to this day (right next to Diamond / Pearl).
Anyways, thanks for this guide. I managed to do it first run, but it took a few attempts to get DOTS in a Nest ball and not a Premiere ball. Also had to make sure the glitched mon egg was in the first slot when it hatched, so I could release it through 'deposit pokemon' without the game freezing whenever I had the egg in another slot (using the d-pad to hover over the egg's slot would make the game freeze completely.)
Now at this point, I finally have a Shiny Mew using a bit of RNG manipulation as well. Usually I do genuine soft resets and I hunt my shinies the good ol' fashioned way (with a huge bit of patience), but being able to abuse Emerald has been quite a fun learning experience. Between your's and blisy's guides, I've learned a lot. I'm about to start heading to the other event islands to RNG manipulate the legendaries there as well.
I'm interested in the future for this game. Now that we have code we can basically run on the game itself, there's an unlimited amount of possibilities waiting to be discovered. Thanks again for this guide.

This is hilarious how much of a coincidence I'm experiencing right now. About a week ago, I was looking up how to max Beauty on a Sapphire cartridge without the battery (and the ability to grow berries), and ended up on the Ribbonmasters subreddit, where I sorted by top of all time and found the shiny Mew that mentioned the Emerald event glitch. Following that, I watched a CZcams video that explained this exact glitch and how to abuse it, and now I'm here a week later!
    Small world, innit?

Your save file will be mostly OK, as long as you don’t put any mon in the last few boxes. I’ve done this on at least 8 saves and never broke anything important.
Some unimportant data will probably get corrupted (like having “number of trades” registered as 65535), and you might end up with over 999999 money (but not always). If you want to save time and don’t mind these little inconveniences than you can just go for it~

Wow I can’t believe that worked! Out of all the videos I’ve watched this one is the easiest to follow. So I did everything right and was able to get three good eggs with a nest ball. With the first egg I did the steps and got the old sea map. I was left with two more and was wondering what I could do with them. I went to the link with all the codes and found the one for birth island and navel rock. I went back to my PC took one of the good eggs and placed it in my party. Then I changed the box names for navel rock. I left the pc and saved the game. After I ran around inside the poke center until the egg hatched and wouldn’t you know I get another diploma! I went to talk to the dude in the upper right corner and he gifted me the ticket to navel rock! I went back and input the birth island code and repeated the steps. I was able to get Mew, deoxys, ho oh and Lugia. No glitch moves and they all obey!! Worked great thank you

This is pretty crazy. I remember years ago seeing a video of this same premise, but it was like 50 minutes long and had so many steps and setup. A lot of advanced terminology that I was unfamiliar with, the whole thing just seemed so complex and strange that I doubted if it was even feasible to execute for … a noob I guess, lol.
This is a very comprehensive guide though, I feel like I might have to try this. I had used PHkex to manually set event flags within my save a while back to achieve this same end result, to get that “authentic” feeling of getting the event item and traveling there via ferry. But the fact this can all be done in game, on a legitimate copy, with no third party hex editors or anything is fascinating. In theory this was even possible when I was a child in elementary school with my friends, we could have gotten anything we wanted that was otherwise unobtainable, had anybody known this was possible back then. How people figured this out is beyond me. Major props to the pokemon community, you madlads

I've heard of methods that have you transfer a Pokémon from Emerald over to some of the newer gen games to identify secret ID with certain software.

    •  Před 2 lety +3

@@lantern_XIII Yeah so other than finding a raw shiny, or starting a fresh game, you can actually use the ACE codes to Check your Secret ID, or even change your Secret ID.
Its in the 1st list of codes in Sleipnir's pastebin:
Read SID from Pokémon in box 9 slot 27:
Note: put a Pokémon with the SID you want to read in slot 27 of box 9. After executing this code the SID of said Pokémon will overwrite your Trainer ID: read it in your trainer card. If you want to keep your old TID simply softreset without savinf after reading the SID to undo the code. This can be used to read the SID of other gen 3 games, as long as you're able to trade a Pokémon from them
