As lyrics in another song goes: My home lies deep within you And I've got my own place in your soul Now when I look out through your eyes I'm young again, even though I'm very old
I was today years old when I learned the drummer is also an actor who appeared on several sitcoms, notably Home Improvement (as one of the construction crew that appeared on Tool Time). I looked up this video after learning that and seeing the closeup of his face was a satisfying confirmation for me.
He was in a LOT of movies, as well. Mostly small parts. Also played drums for Bob Dylan, and for Trini Lopez. He was also in one of the most run TV commercials of all time: he was on a subway car with two old ladies beside him, one of them said something like: "I can't help but notice your breath." He looked down at her with a scowl and said "What about it?" she said something like "It is just so fresh!" then other old lady chimes in with "Yes! I have enjoyed your breath since 34th street!" Then Mickey gets all friendly and says "Why, Thank you!" It was a breath mints commercial.
Even for this early band that Kenny was in - the style of this song was unusual for them - most of their material was in the budding folk-country-rock style of the late 60's - but this one is a real psychedelic, summer of love gem - and fully dude-approved ..
Damb, just thought Kenny was Kenny Rodgers , The Gambler,,,, sang along with Dolly here and there. Didn’t realize that he sang many of my favourite 60 & 70’s iconic songs.
Sorry is was all that aspirin I was taking before I hit my 9th birthday. What can I say it was the 60's man.. they were far out man. What? Was that...really man...haha haha haaa ha...haaaa, You've got some aspirin man? Hey your not the dude, your the ludes dude, ya I know that guy...he's that guy with the thing.
@stardust_memories2260 They got the long hair with the guitar and the yeah yeah yeah and the big thick boots! Whatever happened to real music and automatic respect for our bosses?
Yes kids, before Kenny Rogers became clean and country-cool, he did his share of both acid and pot...and Terry Williams on guitar with that "I'm high AF" grin...priceless...from 1967!
The feeble attempts media back then trying to be be hip and relevant were hilarious. I'm 74. I loved Kenny Rogers early work. I loved the Smothers Bros. Silly video. BTW it was the First Edition credited with recording this song.
I like when they get close-ups of the face on these old videos. The first minute of this video actually sucked because the camera was so far away. But it did get better.
I love how this parody of psychedelic music created an absolute psych banger. A similar example that comes to mind is that of _Who Put The Bomp_ by Barry Mann, a doo wop parody that absolutely nailed it.
The audience laughed at the aspirin thing but it's actually real and is why you don't give aspirin to babies or toddlers anymore. It's called Reye's syndrome and yes, it can cause lasting brain damage. I'm pretty sure it had just recently been discovered when this show was on the air. I grew up taking baby aspirin!
@roseyc.5846 The last time I saw him- many years ago selling records on one of those long-playing commercials- I honestly had no idea who he was until he said his name. He looked nothing like Kenny Rogers. They might just as well have wall-papered him.
Shows back then didn’t allow the bands to actually set up and use their equipment. It was all pre recorded, except for vocals. If you watch many bands from that time, you’ll see the musicians making a mockery of this. Making it obvious that they’re not actually playing, by not having their instruments plugged in, or just not even strumming while music is playing.,etc
All of Mike's Vocal Songs had a little Texas Country Twang to them. "The Kind of Girl I Could Love", "Papa Gene's Blues", "Sweet Young Thing", "You Just May Be The One", "Door Into Summer", and "Sunny Girlfriend"
Not live. They weren't trying to look like it was live, any more than a music video on MTV. Lol. I was a little kid back then and even I knew they weren't really singing and playing their instruments
That rug really tied the room together.
Too bad it got stolen.
I was actually at this Smothers Bothers show.when I was 15.
Cool!
Awesome
Wow!!
Far out man!
Two best shows on TV was this and Laugh In. The political humor is something that we need today so much!
I am old enough to remember when this was on the radio. I’m 72 OK I’m old.
Charlenemack...Remember it well @ 74 . I still repeat those lyrics when goofing around with our admin asst at work . Part time of course .
No no the radio is old!
Me too.
... not everyone makes it to 72 😎🫵🏼
As lyrics in another song goes:
My home lies deep within you
And I've got my own place in your soul
Now when I look out through your eyes
I'm young again, even though I'm very old
The Dude will abide.
"That Rug really tied the room together!" 😎
Yeah but it’s a real pissor when you have to vacuum it😂
And this guy peed on it!

Mickey Jones, who before joining Kenny Rogers toured with Bob Dylan as a replacement drummer for Levon Helm during Dylan’s 1966 World Tour 👍🏼🎶
Today years old you say !!.
The First Edition Drummer immediately caught my eye too

WOW, what a song. What a
Movie. Can I say...GROOVE 🎉🎉❤ !!!!!!
I watched The Big Lebowski for the first time today, and this has become my new favourite tune!
RIP Mr. Smothers

I saw them do this live in Johnson City TN in1970.. I came down from Detroit for a funeral
Fantastic, no disrespect intended towards the passing👍
Damb, just thought Kenny was Kenny Rodgers , The Gambler,,,, sang along with Dolly here and there.
Didn’t realize that he sang many of my favourite 60 & 70’s iconic songs.
Wow... they sound just like the studio recording! 😉
And with no bass guitar, no microphones…etc. Technology was more advanced back then.
They're lip synching to the record.
@@dirtylemon3379 DUH!!!
Thankfully there's several live versions of them doing this.
@@dirtylemon3379 No! Say it ain’t so. What gave it away?
Should have let them perform it LIVE!
You kids and your loud rock and roll music!
What did ya say?

This song gets heavy rotation on the oldies station I listen to,and till this viewing I had no idea it was Kenny Rogers’s singing.Great tune.
Groovy song Man
You were rockin that turtleneck Kenny!
Glen Campbell played the guitar intro.
did not know that.
The psychadelic rug tied the Video together
This is a great song. It was weird to learn it was Kenny Rodgers. (I knew that before but it was still weird.)
It was sung first by Jerry Lee Lewis, FYi
Yes kids, before Kenny Rogers became clean and country-cool, he did his share of both acid and pot...and Terry Williams on guitar with that "I'm high AF" grin...priceless...from 1967!
mickey newbury"s brilliant song!!
Josh Brolin playing Kenny Rogers in a biopic.
Cool song . I was around then
This aggression will not stand man
The drummer was Pete in Home Improvement
Mick Jones
@@ThomasCampbell-gt5wq He played in Sling Blade as well.
Saw them live in Calgary and they were fantastic.
The feeble attempts media back then trying to be be hip and relevant were hilarious.

The psychedelic days!! 😵💫
drummer played with dylan in 66
Fabulous lyrics by them what a great song love it!
It was written by a singer/songwriter named Mickey Newbury.
I like when they get close-ups of the face on these old videos. The first minute of this video actually sucked because the camera was so far away. But it did get better.

Kenny would have been a star if only he had stuck w RnR.
The Coen brothers must've seen this.
Kenny always looked to cash in on the latest trend.
@southpaw8687 He went country for the career longevity. Once you're in with that crowd, they never forget you.
The audience laughed at the aspirin thing but it's actually real and is why you don't give aspirin to babies or toddlers anymore. Kenny was so hot, IMHO..until the facelift. He didn't look like himself anymore after that. 🙄 Well, RIP; your voice is missed. 🙏🏻
Regarding Kenny Rogers face lift, the same with Dolly, she used to be so pretty, until she went under the knife.
More $ than brains

Wow man! That is groovy bordering on far out! Where did I put my striped pants?

I wish I had that drum skin
I like their live version better than the studio recording played here.
far out man!
Mickey Newbury wrote that song. It's a classic.
the dude abides
It seems odd seeing Kenny young.
Not live. They weren't trying to look like it was live, any more than a music video on MTV. Lol. I was a little kid back then and even I knew they weren't really singing and playing their instruments
And we thought it was messed up then....
hey kiddies ,look up mickey newbury .....Boom!
If only KR would've dumped the fuddy duddy clothes and kept on the rock path, he woulda been a real star. Instead, he's Grandma's favorite singer.
That’s worst fake live session ever lol. Badass song though
This version goes hard:

Oh the Shroomanity!
It is when they played it this well czcams.com/video/AULOC--qUOI/video.htmlsi=K8EZxBl6gs8p6TE1

The song was written by Sammy Davis Jr.
@mikebell8012 I heard it was written by Andy Williams and Steve Lawrence.
Mickey Newbury wrote this song.
@@jaykaysr9225 ok, then the video I saw where they said Sammy Davis Jr. wrote must have got it wrong. Thanks.
Sammy has the first option to record this song but must have turned it down.
Micky Newbury.
So how’d he get into country?
I think your right but the gambler seems OK,
He’s not playing his slab bodied Fender P Bass.
Who is actually playing the music?
Drums maybe. One of the guitarists looks like enjoying his time on Saturn.
Probably The Wrecking Crew.
Catchy song but, certainly not what I would call wholesome 🥴
Great song as always but the lip sync is hilarious.
i take it your not a golfer
The dude abides
Kenny Rodgers drops acid
“Weird, messed up song” Yeah? Well, y’know, that’s just, like, uh… your opinion, man.
Hilarious
This video was horribly directed. They even missed the guitar solo. And it was completely lip synced. I do love the song.
He just dropped in to lip sync a song
lip sinking for live tv lol
Yeah, well that was a giant video catastrophe, lip-sync fail, wasn't it?
Oh the Shroomanity!
