And Eric Sykes. He only had small part (Frank Byrce - killed early in Goblet of Fire). He died the year the film came out aged 89. He was nearly completely deaf and blind by then. He was the funniest man I have ever seen on stage, once having the entire audience in stiches and the rest of the cast having to hide their faces for nearly 2 minutes just putting on a coat.

The books were unfinished at the time, but Snape’s ark of the story is so important that Alan needed to know in order to truly understand his character, and with a book series that huge you definitely don’t want to be given people tidbits of story that are not out yet, so that most likely the reason why he was the only one that knew his part of the story

This special gave me an even deeper appreciation of Chris Columbus' work on 1&2. He appreciatied and respected the material and If he hadnt have nailed it on every level, including how he works with kids, I'm not sure we would have had the rest of the films. He really did something magical.

I'm sure someone already wrote this, but this was filmed at the Leavesden Studios where the movies were filmed, yes. But the studios have been turned into a tour for the public! I went there about a year after it opened, and it was INCREDIBLE. I cried twice during the tour. I HIGHLY recommend it, but you MUST get the headphones to enhance the experience. It was SO cool to see the sets and hear all about how the films were made! I think they've even added to it since I've been there. If you can get yourself to England, it's a MUST!

Chris Columbus gained recognition as the writer for Gremlins, The Goonies & The Young Sherlock Holmes.
But the directorial role that really propelled him into people’s consciousness was the highly successful Christmas comedy Home Alone (1990) and its sequel Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992).
The comedy Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), starring Robin Williams, was another box office success for Columbus. He went on to direct several other films throughout the 1990s, which were mostly met with lukewarm reception. However, he found commercial success again for directing the film adaptations of J. K. Rowling's novels, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001) and its sequel, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), which are his highest-grossing films to date. In addition to directing, Columbus was a producer for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), and the drama The Help (2011). He also directed the fantasy Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2010) and the 3D action comedy Pixels (2015).
I live not far from several filming locations that were used in the series. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is home to Goathland Station, which doubled as Hogsmeade. Also, Malham Cove & Grassington Moor appeared in The Deathly Hallows Pt1; being where Harry & Hermione pitch there tent & the location of the Lovegood house respectively.
NYMR will also be seen in the next Mission Impossible film, as well as Indiana Jones & The Dial of Destiny (I visited on one of the filming days….& from a distance saw Harrison Ford).
I also lived in London for 10yrs & went to the premiere of The Order of the Phoenix. But, honestly, the hype when the final film premiered was absolutely insane. Seeing Trafalgar Sq & Leicester Sq packed with fans was something that’s hard to put into words.
It’s worth noting that Robbie Coltrane had previously given us a version of Hagrid in the excellent Blackadders Christmas Carol. Coltrane played the Ghost of Christmas & his performance isn’t a million miles away from what we got in Harry Potter.

I started crying the moment the opening scene came on. It doesn't feel like 20 years has passed at all, and yet it does. I remember going to the first movie with my mom and sister, I was a little over Hogwarts year 1 age, and I really didn't want to watch a kids movie about wizardry, it sounded so childish to me... and I tried my very best to dislike it. Then my mom brought my sister and I to the second movie as well... after which I was sold. I saw the third movie three times. Once on my own the day it came out, I went secretly after school... once with my mom and sister, and once with a guy I liked at the time. It all just spiraled from there. I've read all the books, I've seen all the movies, I haven't really played any of the games although I own Hogwarts Legacy... my pc doesn't really want to run it too smoothly, sadly. I'm a proud Ravenclaw and always will be.
Even after all this time the fanbase is still going strong. Yeah, a lot of controversy is making it less enjoyable at times, but it doesn't change my feelings about the books or movies, just about the behind the scenes and ehh- I've always been more into the product than the writer anyway so I can just wave her off and still enjoy the universe she created.
Hogwarts will always be our home, no matter what.

Yeah… Evanna Lynch became the first like, “legit fan” to be cast in the movies. She basically won a contest, and BAM!!! She’s Luna Lovegood. But yeah, she was a hardcore super Harry nerd. Like with an encyclopedic level of knowledge.

It is interesting how time changes views. In initial interviews right after HP wrapped, none of the 3, especially Harry, we’re interested in revisiting it or being in another HP movie. That is entirely understandable, as they wanted to separate themselves from the characters and try to not be typecast or only be scene as those characters if they were going to continue to do acting. But now that they have all gone on to successful careers they are able to look back at that time a little differently. Daniel especially. He admits to having had a drinking problem in the last movie(s), and can tell when he looks at it when he was drunk or hungover and I think he is disappointed in himself. But it was fear of ‘what’s next’. But who really was the best of all the ‘child’ actors was Rupert Grint. And of the 3, I think he is the only one who got nominated & won acting awards while still filming HP. But it really is a remarkable series of books and films. I know they are talking about a remake but I am not a fan of that personally. Nothing wrong with originals.

Ames, I'm so sorry! A few weeks back, I had been watching some random HP behind the scene clips, not realizing that they were taken from the reunion, then shared the part about Harris' and Faux with you. When I finally watched the whole thing, I felt bad that I may have spoiled that part for you.

If you want more behind the scenes Harry Potter stuff I'd defiantly recomend the "Creating the World of Harry Potter" series, an 8 part series of about 1 hour long episodes where they really take you through everything that went into the movies, actors, characters, sets, practical effects, digital effects, music and sound effects and stunts and really everything you could wish for.
I'd aslo say that Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy)'s autobiography that released recently is well worth a read (or listen, he reads the audiobook himself). He talks a lot about his personal experience on Harry Potter, but also about his upbringing and how he got ino acting in the first place and his eventual problems with alcohol and substance abuse.

Watching each of the movies and having your favourites from what's shown, is also a different experience than with the novels. Each novel / movie is a self contained story within the much larger saga. To tell it in movie form, you have to cut away most of the subplots and strip it right down to the main story. To tell it in novel form, it has LOTS of subplots that add even more charm to the world, or little insights into some new detail. What you experience in watching or reading it is different. Amy I know you're at the start of your novel journey, but you'll start to notice this.
I see the first two movies as pretty faithful to the novels, the third onwards is very different, mostly in the addition of the subplots. JK Rowling did an incredible job of making the subplots feel just as fascinating as the main plot, so you don't even notice you're being toyed with. The final novel split over two movies makes it a pretty faithful adaption of the novel. Novels 4 and 5 are excellent. Without spoiling anything, the first huge section of the Goblet Of Fire makes all the difference in the novel. Movie 5 is excellent, but could have been soooo much better.
Once you've read them all, it gives you extra awareness of the world, both in terms of what was changed and why. For me there's one single thing that's glaringly wrong. The Wizarding World is very old fashioned. ALL of their ways of measuring things, like recipes for potions, or currency they use, is built on a fictional Imperial system. It's the magic version of pounds, ounces, gallons etc. The one single glaring exception is the scoring in Quidditch. 10 points is DECIMAL. As an audience, we have the same conditioning, as JK Rowling has as a writer. Getting 10 points per goal, then a whopping 150 for catching the Golden Snitch? This is not only modern decimal scoring, but at 150 for any single act in a sporting event, is VIDEO GAME point scoring. It's ridiculous how that affects the flow of a sport. I can see how it happened. It is understandable.
She'd only be focussed on how the scenes played out, so she'd have given Quidditch a system that lets her do her part ie create the story scene. I'd imagine it was always intended to be changed at one of the drafts, but somehow never was. By the time the 3rd novel was being written, the 1st movie was released (I think) so the hype for each new novel and movie was double barrelled for most fans. I came to this whole franchise later on, so most of it was released when I started them, I only had to wait near the end.

Also after you finish all the HP books, you should read The Cursed Child, a follow up to HP. It picks up where DH2 ends. It's based on Harry and Ginny's son Albus. I have a complicated relationship with the movies. The actors are just world class ❤ Not just in front of the camera but in real life. You can really feel the chemistry between them and the love for what they are doing. Seeing the Reunion made me cry several times, especially the part where they remembered all the actors who sadly passed away.
As a huge fan of the book series my biggest problem with the movies is the overall script and the directing choices. Too many important moments were left out, too many unimportant things were added. And the usage of 4 different directors made the whole movie franchise feel rather inconsistent and messy.
That's why I have mixed feelings about the upcoming HBO Series. I can see myself having problems accepting the new actors because of the amazing job the old actors did. But I can also see the chance of correcting the many mistakes made by the movies 🙈
