Throughout Season 2 Robb Stark is pillaging the Westerlands (seat of House Lannister) to bait Tywin out of Harrenhal (which is in the Riverlands, seat of House Tully). So they were basically side by side, both holding out in each others' lands trying to see who blinks first. But Tywin realizes Harrenhal in the middle of enemy territory is indefensible, saving the capital is more important. So he abandons the defensive garrison at Harrenhal and instead of going west towards Robb, he takes the Lannister forces to a night march straight down into King's Landing. He has Loras Tyrell with him who is wearing Renly's armor to the bewilderment of the Baratheon forces. With Stannis crushed and with House Tyrell, Lords of The Reach, now alligned with the crown, Robb not only let Tywin's army escape from the Riverlands, he's now pretty much cut off from King's Landing. Tywin has out maneuvered Robb and Stannis.

      @Scarecrow545 Před 7 měsíci

To add onto the part about Renly's armor, it was an intentional gambit to confuse Stannis' forces, and it worked. Several of Stannis' forces were formerly Renly's, and upon seeing Renly's apparent ghost, threw down their arms or rejoined him.

The song Bronn sings with the soldiers at the beginning of the episode is the Lannister song. It's the same tune to which Tywin enters the throne room at the very end. By the time you're done with the series you'll never forget that song. That's a guarantee.

  • @icewinddale2675

After Renly's death they said all of his bannerman flipped to Stannis, EXCEPT the Tyrells. You saw Maergery and Loras crying in front of his body and both Catelyn and Littlefinger separately telling them they can't avenge Renly from the ground. Then next episode we see Littlefinger in Tywin's camp during that "did he notice Arya" scene. But that whole "Arya's gonna get the assassin to kill Tywin" was a red herring. The real reason Littlefinger was at Harrenhal was to arrange the alliance b/w House Lannister and House Tyrell, the Lord Paramores of the Reach. It was subtle but they hinted it in the talk. "Maergery wants to be queen I take it" Tywin asks Littlefinger. All the pieces throughout the season, even the unassuming ones, build to Blackwater. The Lannisters now have their southern flank covered. With money and supplies coming in, the tide of the war has turned completely. But who will be the true power in the capital itself? Them or Tyrells?

The ending of Blackwater is chef's kiss. Cersei's convos with everyone all through this episode is great, but that final monologue with Tommen is what you call "aesopian". Side by side to that is the image of Loras Tyrell in Renly's armor and helm, cutting through the Baratheon lines under the moonlit night looking like an otherworldy entity. Then we have Tywin's grand entrance in the throne room to Rains of Castamere. Too good! Battles in period movies are all about the jazz of the combat, whereas Blackwater is just a backdrop, a vehicle to tell the story of the characters. It's not just some spectacular action p0rn. The realism of the moment and the psychology of the different characters in the process of reckoning with their own mortality is as important as the actual sword fighting. War isn't glorified or made to seem desirable. You're alternatively torn between rooting for either side and no one at all.

It's not like Cersei didn't know a thing or two about being sold into a marriage to someone who turned out to be different than your girlish notions of them. And yes, selfishly, having Sansa be on board accepting of her fate, and learning to find a way to be a good member of her family and court benefits her as well.

YESSSS FINALLY! Welcome back to THRONES!
In the halls right after Cersei gets the essence of nightshade, they are singing “Rains of Castamere”
The Reynes (pronounced “Rain”) were the second wealthiest family in Westeros right after the Lannisters. They built a castle as grande as Casterly Rock, called Castamere, and flaunted their wealth in the face of the Lannisters. They openly challenged the Lannisters because they thought that Tytos (Tywins father) ruling over the Westerlands was weak and that that the Lannisters would be easily overthrown. Young Tywin Lannisters army slew the Reynes and torched Castamere. The Lannisters then absorbed their people, lands and money becoming the most influential family in Westeros. Tywin had the bodies of the Reynes family hung at the gates of Casterly Rock for an entire Summer (their summers were known to last years and years, just like their winters) The destruction of house Reyne was immortalized in the Song. You hear it ALOT on the show.
Sansa knows how that game is played, she does everything to stay alive. Smart cookie. Sansa IS learning from Cersei. Just like Arya is learning from Tywin. It’s fuckin crazzzzyyyy
See the look on Hounds face at the wildfire? And now you’ve seen what it can do. 😉
Cersei can smell blood in the water; you’re right in saying that Cersei is a lot like Tywin. And Cersei is always telling her brothers how she should be the person who holds Tywins confidence. Cersei is regrettably one of my favorite characters on this show, Along with Littlefinger. They both bring so much to the story

Well, you’re right. And Tyrion even if he knew would no doubt keep his mouth shut to make his men desperate to defend the city. But the fact of the matter is that portraying Stannis, of all people, as a leader of a marauding band of rapists is a misrepresentation on Tyrion’s part. A deception. Stannis gelds all rapists that he finds, and burns cannibals alive besides. His army is kept in line in a way of ruthless brutality and discipline that most armies aren’t. That is a fact. If nothing else Stannis is disciplined - disciplined in a way that is frankly superhuman. And he holds his vassals, servants and fighting men to a high standard as well.

In the tourney scene where the hound fights the Mountain in the books it seems to be that the hound could have possibly killed the mountain if he really wanted to. “The Mountain pivoted in wordless fury, swinging his longsword in a killing arc with all his massive strength behind it, but the Hound caught the blow and turned it, and for what seemed an eternity the two brothers stood hammering at each other as a dazed Loras Tyrell was helped to safety. Thrice Ned saw Ser Gregor aim savage blows at the hound's-head helmet, yet not once did Sandor send a cut at his brother's unprotected face.”

Bronn is quick and overconfident, he gives the air of someone who is very good and he is but I think against the Hound he’d struggle. It would be close but I think the Hound would edge out especially if they were using swords. Close quarters would be a harder match though. Honestly though they haven’t had many fights yet so I’m trying to use book knowledge aswell, the age of the actors also sort of limit their skills while the characters are a quite a bit younger so in the books they are on another level

(Warning: This is TL:DR. But since you seem interested in the lores, talking about this is worth it. Don't worry no spoilers.)
There's a thing that happens during Blackwater which is the source of a much speculated theory in the ASOIAF verse. It's called "The Unkiss". This subplot is not in the show at all, so talking about it isn't a spoiler. What happens is that when Sansa looks back at the night of Blackwater, she fondly remembers how she'd shared a kiss with the Hound. Except for this, that night during her actual interaction with the Hound the kiss never happens! But later on, she keeps misremembering a kiss. This spun a ton of theories and deep dives. From simple things like it being a case of the "unreliable narrator" plot device, or the expression of a teenager's infatuation, to darker things like it being the repressed memory of a victim who's been repeatedly abused, maybe even by the Hound, etc etc. Anytime GRRM's been asked about The Unkiss he's downplayed it like he does with every theory, but also kinda egged it on by hinting that The Unkiss does have an important purpose. One thing's for sure, he's masterfully used a "Rashomon Effect" type plot device. On the surface this is such an inconsequential thing that if you squint you'd miss it, and yet it's too peculiar to be put in there for nothing. Truly a first-rate explorer of the complexities of human nature!

Also, Cersei was great in this episode, I love watching drunk Cersei, lol. I know she's set up as a villain, but I do like watching her and wondering what she'll do next. And like you say, she loves her children, and everything she does is for them. I know it doesn't stop her being a terrible person sometimes, and her spoiling that little turd Joffrey is part of the reason he is the way he is, but I don't find her to be completely villainous, you can understand the motives behind some of the things she does. And as horrible as she seems to be to Sansa, you're right, she is tutoring her, and this should help Sansa in the long run. But back to the battle, I was really torn - Stannis technically is the rightful king, and I'd love to see Joffrey's head removed from his body. But I like the rest of the Lannisters, so I was kind of rooting for them too. This show really gets you confused as to who to support, that's what makes it such compelling watching.

As to books when it comes to Tywin's sort of personality, he's effectively a combination of the principles in Machievelli's "The Prince" and King Edward "Longshanks" of England, otherwise known as "The Hammer of the Scots."

The three knights that would have had the chance to kill Jaime were:
    Gregor Clegane (Mountain)
    Barristan Selmy (The Bold)
Arthur Dayne (Sword of the Morning).
But I vaguely remember seeing a post saying that GRRM said that Jaime was better than any knight except for Arthur Dayne. Arthur Dayne was the level where Jaime could never reach. Barristan Selmy was one of the best swordsmen even when he grew old. The Mountain was a beastly figure, kinda like Kaido, he mostly uses his big physique to his advantage rather than sword skills. So if I were to put this in order of skill it would be:
    Arthur Dayne>Jaime Lannister>Barristan Selmy>Gregor Clegane
Oh yeah, and in the books, that 1v1 between Jaime and Ned never happened. So we really have no clue if Ned is a skilled warrior. GRRM said Ned was better as a commander than a warrior too, better to leave the fighting to Brandon and Robert.

A Clash of Kings - Sansa VII - Blackwater :
( The Little Bird and the Hound )
Her bedchamber was black as pitch. Sansa barred the door and fumbled through the dark to the window. When she ripped back the drapes, her breath caught in her throat.
The southern sky was aswirl with glowing, shifting colors, the reflections of the great fires that burned below. Baleful green tides moved against the bellies of the clouds, and pools of orange light spread out across the heavens. The reds and yellows of common flame warred against the emeralds and jades of wildfire, each color flaring and then fading, birthing armies of short-lived shadows to die again an instant later. Green dawns gave way to orange dusks in half a heartbeat. The air itself smelled burnt, the way a soup kettle sometimes smelled if it was left on the fire too long and all the soup boiled away. Embers drifted through the night air like swarms of fireflies.
Sansa backed away from the window, retreating toward the safety of her bed. I'll go to sleep, she told herself, and when I wake it will be a new day, and the sky will be blue again. The fighting will be done and someone will tell me whether I'm to live or die. "Lady," she whimpered softly, wondering if she would meet her wolf again when she was dead.
Then something stirred behind her, and a hand reached out of the dark and grabbed her wrist.
His fingers were rough and calloused, and sticky with blood. "Little bird. I knew you'd come." The voice was a drunken rasp.
Sansa opened her mouth to scream, but another hand clamped down over her face, smothering her. "If you scream I'll kill you. Believe that."
He took his hand from her mouth. Her breath was coming ragged. The Hound had a flagon of wine on her bedside table. He took a long pull. "Don't you want to ask who's winning the battle, little bird?"
Outside, a swirling lance of jade light spit at the stars, filling the room with green glare. She saw him for a moment, all black and green, the blood on his face dark as tar, his eyes glowing like a dog's in the sudden glare. Then the light faded and he was only a hulking darkness in a stained white cloak.
"Who?" she said, too frightened to defy him.
The Hound laughed. "I only know who's lost. Me."
He is drunker than I've ever seen him. He was sleeping in my bed. What does he want here? "What have you lost?"
"All." The burnt half of his face was a mask of dried blood. "Bloody dwarf. Should have killed him. Years ago."
    "He's dead, they say."
"Dead? No. Bugger that. I don't want him dead." He cast the empty flagon aside. "I want him burned. If the gods are good, they'll burn him, but I won't be here to see. I'm going."
"Going?" She tried to wriggle free, but his grasp was iron.
"The little bird repeats whatever she hears. Going, yes."
    "Where will you go?"
"Away from here. Away from the fires. Go out the Iron Gate, I suppose. North somewhere, anywhere."
"You won't get out," Sansa said. "The queen's closed up Maegor's, and the city gates are shut as well."
"Not to me. I have the white cloak. And I have this." He patted the pommel of his sword. "The man who tries to stop me is a dead man. Unless he's on fire." He laughed bitterly.
    "Why did you come here?"
"You promised me a song, little bird. Have you forgotten?"
She didn't know what he meant. She couldn't sing for him now, here, with the sky aswirl with fire and men dying in their hundreds and their thousands. "I can't," she said. "Let me go, you're scaring me."
"Everything scares you. Look at me. Look at me."
The blood masked the worst of his scars, but his eyes were white and wide and terrifying. The burnt corner of his mouth twitched and twitched again. Sansa could smell him; a stink of sweat and sour wine and stale vomit, and over it all the reek of blood, blood, blood.
I could keep you safe," he rasped. "They're all afraid of me. No one would hurt you again, or I'd kill them." He yanked her closer, and for a moment she thought he meant to kiss her.
He was too strong to fight. She closed her eyes, wanting it to be over, but nothing happened. "Still can't bear to look, can you?" she heard him say.
He gave her arm a hard wrench, pulling her around and shoving her down onto the bed. "I'll have that song. Florian and Jonquil, you said."
His dagger was out, poised at her throat. "Sing, little bird. Sing for your little life."
Her throat was dry and tight with fear, and every song she had ever known had fled from her mind. Please don't kill me, she wanted to scream, please don't. She could feel him twisting the point, pushing it into her throat, and she almost closed her eyes again, but then she remembered. It was not the song of Florian and Jonquil, but it was a song. Her voice sounded small and thin and tremulous in her ears.
    Gentle Mother, font of mercy,
save our sons from war, we pray,
stay the swords and stay the arrows,
let them know a better day.
    Gentle Mother, strength of women,
help our daughters through this fray,
soothe the wrath and tame the fury,
teach us all a kinder way.
She had forgotten the other verses. When her voice trailed off, she feared he might kill her, but after a moment the Hound took the blade from her throat, never speaking.
Some instinct made her lift her hand and cup his cheek with her fingers. The room was too dark for her to see him, but she could feel the stickiness of the blood, and a wetness that was not blood. "Little bird," he said once more, his voice raw and harsh as steel on stone. Then he rose from the bed. Sansa heard cloth ripping, followed by the softer sound of retreating footsteps.
When she crawled out of bed, long moments later, she was alone. She found his cloak on the floor, twisted up tight, the white wool stained by blood and fire. The sky outside was darker by then, with only a few pale green ghosts dancing against the stars. A chill wind was blowing, banging the shutters. Sansa was cold. She shook out the torn cloak and huddled beneath it on the floor, shivering.

A Clash of Kings - Sansa VI - Blackwater:
( The Princess and the Queen- )
..........Sansa was horrified. "These are women, unarmed, and gently born."
"Their birth protects them," Cersei admitted, "though not as much as you'd think. Each one's worth a good ransom, but after the madness of battle, soldiers often seem to want flesh more than coin. Even so, a golden shield is better than none. Out in the streets, the women won't be treated near as tenderly. Nor will our servants. Pretty things like that serving wench of Lady Tanda's could be in for a lively night, but don't imagine the old and the infirm and the ugly will be spared. Enough drink will make blind washerwomen and reeking pig girls seem as comely as you, sweetling."
    "Me?"
"Try not to sound so like a mouse, Sansa. You're a woman now, remember? And betrothed to my firstborn." The queen sipped at her wine. "Were it anyone else outside the gates, I might hope to beguile him. But this is Stannis Baratheon. I'd have a better chance of seducing his horse." She noticed the look on Sansa's face, and laughed. "Have I shocked you, my lady?" She leaned close.
"You little fool. Tears are not a woman's only weapon. You've got another one between your legs, and you'd best learn to use it.
You'll find men use their swords freely enough. Both kinds of swords."
Osney was all smiles as he knelt beside the queen. "The hulks have gone up, Y'Grace. The whole Blackwater's awash with wildfire. A hundred ships burning, maybe more."
    "And my son?"
"He's at the Mud Gate with the Hand and the Kingsguard, ................."Y'Grace," he said quietly, "the boys caught a groom and two maidservants trying to sneak out a postern with three of the king's horses."
"The night's first traitors," the queen said, "but not the last, I fear. Have Ser Ilyn see to them, and put their heads on pikes outside the stables as a warning." As they left, she turned to Sansa. "Another lesson you should learn, if you hope to sit beside my son. Be gentle on a night like this and you'll have treasons popping up all about you like mushrooms after a hard rain. The only way to keep your people loyal is to make certain they fear you more than they do the enemy."
"I will remember, Your Grace," said Sansa, though she had always heard that love was a surer route to the people's loyalty than fear. If I am ever a queen, I'll make them love me......

There are reasons why Sansa didn't leave shown and not shown, but from Sansa's POV: She hears The war is lost, Stannis is inside, Stannis won't harm her as her father backed him.She is told to lock herself in her room, she encounters a drunk hound, and this scene is DARKER in the books read Sansa VII- down there vvvvvv somewhere.
If your child called you today and told you there's snipers around her school, she's held up in a locked secure room, and the cops just entered the building, would you tell her to go with a drunk, a drunk that also threatens her with bullets flying ??? I don't think so, that's what Sansa is facing, based on what she knew at the time her reason is a sound one; sadly the cops came from Casterly rock, Highgarden and not Stormsend or Dragonstone.
