  • My dog's spinal surgery:
    In 2019, when my working cocker spaniel (Winston) was 7 years old, he experienced some trouble walking. An MRI showed compression on his spinal cord, and he was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease. He underwent spinal surgery to have the pressure removed and implants inserted to stabilize his spine. This is his story.

    My Mum sent me this video as it was something we went through. This happened to my dog when he was 3. He’s a small dog. We were told he either needed a $10,000 operation or to be put to sleep. We couldn’t afford the op. Heartbroken, We were offered to take him home with medication and cage rest over the weekend to see how he goes and if he shows improvement we can continue rest and gradual physio. He was in cage rest for a month before he started to put weight on back legs. We had to hold him up to go potty. It was a slow progress. 4 years later he’s a happy dog who runs around like nothing happened. We do have a doggy pram for him to join us on really long walks but he can walk several kilometres without any issue. So glad Winston’s surgery was a success. It’s so hard to see our fur babies suffer.

    I am an animal lover. But dogs, they are our best friends, our forever buddies. The empathy, love and company they give us is the most anyone could ever ask for. All they want in return is a bed, food, attention and some of that love back. My dog is 19 years old. He will be 20 in December. Every day is a bonus. I know his time is finite. I try to ensure that every single moment I have with him is spent well and that I can show him how very much he means to me. He is my little boy, my best friend, he will listen to my moans, he will never ever tell me to shut up. He puts up with me. I'm sure that Winston knows how much his mum loves him, that he's in the best place. He's so loveable to watch in your videos.

    My son's Cheweenie just had IVDD surgery and the bills so far are just under $13K. Luckily, she has started regaining her back legs.. So we hope for a full recovery (she was a stage 5 with no pain reflex), and we hope it doesn't happen again.

    I have a show Cocker Spaniel. All KC registered, all the bells and whistles and I did my due diligence on the breeder and went to see the puppies at their home. .
    No concerns, Willow got to around a year old and one day she would not get out of bed. . Didn’t think much of it until she refused to go for a walk one day.
    I could see she was struggling to get up.
    She basically went lame over night. . Took her to the vets and she got referred to a specialist through my pet insurance. . Long story short. . Cruciate ligament disease.
    £15k worth of vets bills and surgery and she’s back running around.
    You just never know what you’re gonna get, it’s heart breaking.
    As much as it’s great to see your dog running around no matter what the breed but you have to make them rest.
    As much as I love dogs I also hate the breeders for pushing the dogs out to meet the demand, this is producing weaker dogs.

      My 17+ yr old mix was my constant travel companion. She had been having worsening spinal issues for a while, and last spring we were researching getting her a cart. (The vet said she was a good candidate for one.)
      But then, early last summer, cancer took her just before we purchased one.
      Solo traveling is not the same...

    My dog had an IVDD episode at age 7. Luckily, strict crate rest for 8 weeks and meds took care of the problem. She is 16 now and never had another incident. I did keep her from jumping off furniture and stairs since then. I was lucky. Scariest experience a dog owner can go through.

      Same here, dog owners have to be strick & stay consistent for the healing to work. My dog was on crate rest for 3mths and carried up & down stairs and never was allowed to be on furniture. My shih tzu is 15 and doing well. Occasionally, his IVDD will reoccur, but he puts himself on crate rest when he has his flare-ups. Lol 😆

    • @mamabear9389
      @mamabear9389 Před 9 dny

      @ericalovett4690 Glad your dog is doing well. I think being consistent with avoiding jumping and stairs makes a difference. I sometimes wonder if I had never allowed furniture jumping or stairs to begin with, would she have ever had an issue. If I get another small dog, I will prevent furniture jumping and stairs from the beginning.

    Hi Roseanna, I’ve had the human equivalent of Winston’s spinal issues for more than 5 years now. Complications mean I am still waiting for corrective surgery. My heart broke seeing Winston frozen on the path. That’s what happened to me, though as I am much heavier than a cocker Spaniel I had to be picked up by 2 burly paramedics! I can tell you that the pain is like nothing else, you are literally paralysed as no matter how hard you try, your body refuses to move your legs rather than experience the pain again. Seeing him trying so hard to walk and even eventually getting his toy, he must love you so much. I’m so glad his surgery was a success and it’s not a little bit down to the fact that you cared for him so well. My family had to rally around me for a while as I learned to walk again and it’s frustrating at the time, but I am forever grateful. At the moment I am still not well enough to have ‘holidays’ or travel far beyond my house, but my dream is to live a life like you do with Winston. Thank you for sharing all your adventures x

    Awww years ago I had a German shepherd she was amazing, well when she was 10 her back legs went, she didn't cry at all she just required me to lift her outside for the toilet and to lift her back in again when she had finished. If she had once cried in pain I would have not hesitated and took her to the vets. But honestly she never cried. When she was 12 I had taken my kids to school and I came back to my front door being wide open I thought I had been burgled. I went inside my dog wasn't there so then I thought someone had stolen her. Then my husband appeared I told him what had happened and he said he had probably forgotten to close the door as he was carrying the dog, I asked him where she was and he said he had, had her put to sleep. I never even got to say goodbye to her. We divorced soon after. I think he didn't like her because she wouldn't do anything he said but everything I said. Xx

    Can totally relate, my best pal Charlie had a multitude of issues which all stemmed from a heart murmur then lung disease to failing kidneys. We went to a heart specialist and they weren’t able to operate so he was prescribed multiple medications which included steroids and even an inhaler. 2 years of alarms set to make sure we didn’t miss his medications. Unfortunately we knew there was no cure but his last 2 years was very special and he had a pretty normal life. He died in my arms but I managed to revive him and get him to the vet unfortunately she confirmed what we already knew and so we had to let him go. We never regretted any of it and we miss him every day. Lovely story thank you for sharing.

    As always it is exceptional in content and it was nice to see it edited that way too.
    My last dog was initially my mothers, I always tried to ensure the dog had a good life. I inherited her from my mother when she passed and two years later the dog passed (when she lost her quality of life) caused by leukhemia.
    It was extremely traumatic to see her deteriorate and very difficult to let her go. I would give up all my privileges for one more day with either. I urge people to be the best they can and embrace those they love every day. We have no idea if they will be hear tomorrow.

    Can not believe how much winstons story mirrors Maggie's story our two year old Jackrusele Terrorist even down to the same Liverpool University small animal hospital, at 6 months old Maggie had a cyst removed from inside her spinal column massive surgery and yes that's only half the story the recovery time and emotional effort that we put in to it worrying about meeting other dogs on her walks hopefully we don't meet a playful dog thst would jump on Maggie, even the cost the same and insurance cover £3000 was the same for Maggie, she is now fully recovered but I will always worry for her back so I fully empathise with every thing you have said here,
    Winston is part of your family and that is right he's a Beautiful Dog And Freind, so happy for you both really good outcome, Liked and Subscribed and loving the Go Pod,

    Last year my dog Ivy had a biopsy for a lump on her foot, it turned out to be cancer, unfortunately the vet didn’t remove all the cells in the biopsy process so she had to go in for another surgery to remove it all.. that all amounted to $3270.
    Three weeks after her second surgery she did her knee and required a plate to stabilise her knee. Three weeks into her recovery she developed an infection and her body was rejecting the implants so had to have it removed.. all of that was a total of $11,165.
    Two weeks into her recovery my other dog Leo did his knee.. $4450 for that one.
    Just when I thought it was all over .. two weeks before Christmas Ivy did her other knee (left side) $5085.
    A grand total of $23,970.
    No insurance, I’ve always just put whatever their insurance cost into another account over the years.
    I fully understand the alarms and the round the clock care and then therapy and rehab sessions.
    I’m lucky I’m self employed and work from home.
    This year I told my animals they all have to be good and stay healthy!!

Totally get all the difficult decisions you had to make and respect how you put Winston’s best interests before your own. I continue to cherish every day (when we have long walks) and night with her (when she sleeps on my bed) She continues to be fed at 06:00, 11:00, 16:00 and 22:00 she also needs to go to the toilet during the night, so a busy but full life.

    Reminded me of my Golden Retriever- She had a sarcoma that was surgically removed and the surgery damaged a nerve which prevented her from walking properly. If a dog can't walk, the quality of life just isn't there, so we had to make the hard decision to have her put to sleep a few months after the surgery. It was still worth it, just on the chance that the surgery would work and she did not have a problem. Our friends are not all human and that doesn't make them less of a friend. You are a good pet owner- "logic" is not needed- a friend is not a refrigerator, ready to be replaced.

    I’ve had two dachshunds who have both had very similar ops~ their discs explode and can cause paralysis. My first dachshund was in for 10 day and the same disc exploded again within 24 hours of him being home so he went in for a second op and stayed in another 8 days. £8000 and he was only insured or £1000. He never fully recovered and couldn’t walk far. The dachshund I have now was a rescue and her back went on the 13th day of her insurance policy starting so they wouldn’t pay because discs are classed as an illness and not an accident. Illness cover started on the 14th day of the policy starting. £6000. She has times when it plays up but I would do it again for her, even if she needed wheels because she is such a spunky little thing, nothing would stop her and she would absolutely make the best of it. You have been so lucky with Winston : he is just so full of beans you would never guess that he was paralysed at one point. You never see a spaniel with a sill tail!,

      I am so sorry to hear of what you and your dogs have had to go through. I think it's harder because we can't explain to them what's going on. But I'm glad to hear that your second dog is living life to the fullest. I have been so lucky with Winston's operation; you wouldn't even know that he had one and it doesn't stop him from doing anything. Spaniels are known for having waggy tails, and I actually think this is why a lot of working cockers have this op because their always shaking their bottom and almost bending themselves in half. Winston spinal operation is right at the point where his body bends. I could be wrong, but that's my theory.

    Glad all is fine and let’s hope Winston stays that way into his old age. At 72 (dam it) I’ve had and still do have dogs in fact we’ve got two 3 yr old (daft) labradoodles but in my 72 years I’ve always had dogs and fortunately my wife loves dogs so we carried on the tradition but unfortunately with dogs comes eventual sadness. We lost a dog at 7 with brain cancer, another at 8 with bone cancer and Bernes at also 8 because of the breed their joints don’t last but whilst you’ve got them like you are doing you get the most out of them and cherish every moment. I agree with you that you have to really think before aggressive treatment for your dog we’ve had to several times and it’s only you who can make that decision (with input from the vet). Happy caravanning to you and Winston.

    Pets are family having had big dogs up until my mid twenties I have heard of hip issues around the back legs so really sympathise with you because of the worry of this reoccurring.
    Sadly after my last dog a Great Pyrenees I decided enough is enough mainly because where I live the local idiots think smashing glass across footpaths is a fun thing to do cannot exactly pick a dog that size up and carry it a great distance so now a cat person untill last year had twin sisters (both house cats) until one passed away through a heart attack at 13yrs old (happened day I changed vets (old one didn't pick up on a heart issue) so to hear about Winston is upsetting he's a good age.
    People have told me it is cruel to keep a cat indoors all the time my reply we have had someone leaving poisoned meat around regularly find posters up looking for lost cats.
    I used to help the local RSPCA and neighbours told me about some sick cats sadly to late so my one is safe.
    Hope Winston goes on for years to come

      Even at 15kg, Winston is too heavy for me to carry any meaningful distance, so I can imagine the struggle with a big dog! A friend of mine had a cat who one day went out and never came back again; I think the not knowing what has happened is the worst, so I can understand your reasons for keeping your at home.
      Thank you so much for watching our video and for commenting. All the best to you and your feline.

    £7,000 is a lot, but would happily pay double for five years and more with your best mate👍

    Yes, sounds cold but I get what you mean. From the outside looking in, it's easy to judge. Until you're in that exact situation (which I hope I won't be), I guess in all honesty my decision ....well I really don't know.
    Glad he's going strong 🙂

      My worst fear was putting him through all the stress and pain of the operation and then still having to put him to sleep, when in hindsight it would have been kinder to put him to sleep in the beginning and avoid the pain and stress. But I guess you never know how it’s going to turn out. Fortunately for us, it was worth it and Winston has had an extra five happy years. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    I was re-re-gifted a 6 yr. old Australian Cattle Dog Heeler. In March I put her down (18 yrs old) after spending 12 wonderful tough learning humbling loyal empathetic bonding years. I became a better human. Hearing you speak about Winston's troubles, do you think you became a better human?

    • @Roz.S
      @Roz.S  Před 4 dny

      Yes, I would say so. Winston has taught me how to be more patient and understanding, two qualities I severely lacked before getting him.

    🥰🥰 Furry friends are much more than just ordinary animals ... 😊 around 1980 my parents got a similar coloured cocker spaniel girl "Stella" , with the same enrgy ... just like Sir Winston !

    Mines a working cocker i also had her at a young age of 2.5 ,Winston certainly has lots more energy than mine , mines more a explorer than jogger lol so to speak I often wonder if her previous life as a house dog has made her this way .

      Winston is a lot less energetic than he was in his younger days, although he's still full of beans 😅 Does your have any show cocker lines mixed in? They tend to be a bit more laid back.

      @Roz.S  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Yes, he’s all good. He’s had five years of no spinal problems and he’s had lots of adventures and happy memories. He’s still in good shape, so hopefully he’s got a few more years left. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Have I missed something, what about his poorly leg ?

    • @Roz.S
      @Roz.S  Před 4 měsíci +1

      This is a story about the spinal operation he had at 7 years old (5 years ago).
      Winston sprained his front leg 3-weeks ago in Wales and had to spend a few weeks at home resting (hence no adventure vlogs). But he's much better now, and he's back out on walks and a new adventure vlog will be (hopefully) coming next week 👍

      @@Roz.S thank you for the update, when you bought up the past operation I was concerned it was related, I know what and when the video was about.

    Wow. What a beautiful, uplifting and truly heartwarming story. Thank you so much for sharing and for articulating so brilliantly the difficult journey you both travelled. Have to admit, for a moment I was in absolute bits before I realised the timeline of events! Winston is, as we his loyal fans all know, an absolute legend. Your channel is an absolute breath of fresh air and after this latest episode will I'm sure gain many more loyal followers in the future. 🫡

      Thank you so much. Yes, this is a story from 5 years ago; Winston is currently asleep in the Pod whilst I work (we're currently out on an adventure 😀) and it's all a distant memory to him.
      Glad to hear you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching and commenting.
