Amazing crew, amazing boat, and a terrific skipper. Books and manuals cannot substitute being in the wind, fog, and chop and having to juggle multiple responsibilities at once and learning on the job. Sailing is art as much as science. The Captain's dissertation on holding short overnight was a great lesson in seamanship and reading all the available data while balancing it with priceless experience. Books and manuals can't teach that. That comes from doing.
You can absolutely learn seam'nship through books and internalize all that stuff, but at some point you also have to earn it :) // Andy
I'm learning so much with these videos, especially the weather routing.
So many whales, so beautiful to see such numbers. They looked like they were racing you :)
Brilliant filming James, thank you so much.
Welcome to the Kingdom of Denmark, James. You finally made it.
I'm taking the Las Palmas to Cape Verde passage (with very little experience). This was a great way to start orienting myself. Thanks, James!
Man your all over! Love it man, saving up for my own boat to follow in your foot steps
James you was born to sail. And you doing well sailing on your own and with a crew safe sailing James and the crew.
This may be the single best practical sailing series on CZcams. Thanks for all your work. Can you talk at some point about boat insurance as you travel? Or if you have, which video is that in? Seems like lots of cruisers are uninsured.
The pilot whales are not slow. I loved being followed by them near the Faroes.
Thanks, James. This is going to be a very enjoyable collaboration!
So excited to see this James 🙌⛵️
Very impressive captain and crew! This captain sure knows his nav system, that's for damn sure.
Thank you for a great trip!
Can't wait to see this!
Crazy cool ! Nice werk helpin with reefing that sale James, and the very enjoyable video and journey. 👍
Helmsman needed to luff the main more while in reefing procedure. Good teamwork in recovery. Fast boat. Miss those sounds. Very very good interviews of crew, hit the feels. Connected. Raw 👍🏻. Truly pleasing movie making.
The segment on heaving to was easy to follow as that has been great to conquer after much practice.
I’m commenting as I watch and I’m compelled to say again that the movie making quality is truly top notch with the footage but also the audio quality and chosen music. At the end, my wife said, “aw, we should do that!” 😳😳
👏👍🏻
Hi Dave, that's a common misconception about luffing the main offshore. You NEVER want to flog sails offshore, it destroys them. We were deep downwind, and a mainsail reefing system needs to work on this point of sail, as even in nice weather its too rough to head up. The lazyjacks were new, and I had installed them incorrectly. This was since fixed, and now we're able to reef on all points as we should be able to. You just need to careful as the sail gets against the rig not to have it hang up on spreaders and fittings. Incidentally, this is much harder to do on modern rigs with swept-back spreaders. // Andy
@@59NorthSailing truly, is the goal to keep a slight wind tension? I agree flogging is damaging but I assumed it being fully loose was needed so it will slide easier. I thought that is why yours caught the jacks.
@@DAVEEMAN1 It got hung-up because the lazy jacks were crossed over the sail track with the boom eased. I re-led them once we got to Greenland to create more of a gap between the down-line on the lazy jacks and the sail track and that solved the issue. In this specific case, it was down to how the lazy jacks were rigged (incorrectly), not how the sail was set. So it got caught on the cars here, not the sail. // Andy
@@59NorthSailing I appreciate that you took time to explain further. It was difficult to see on the film. My batons tips often catch my jacks on sail raising.
Anyways, great channel and good sailing. 👍🏻 cheers 🍻
Awesome experience. ❤
You seem in such a better place than some videos I've seen you in.. Glad your doing OK brother.. Love from England
Very entertaining, thank you for sharing
Great work crew, I really enjoyed this adventure documentary ❤
Here for this! So rad!
Enjoying this series and learning so much!
It was good to see you guys, "Heave to." It amazes me how many sailors, with many many more sea miles than me, at my marina and other places that I have talked to that understand the concept but have not actually done it. For myself as a solo coastal sailor heaving too is the easiest way to put on the breaks, reassess the moment or just make lunch. As always, thanks James for going where many of us dream.
WOW! What an adventure! Icebergs! Holy smokes! That must've been a huge WoW factor! Safe travels James and crew! This is epic!
'what an adventure
thanks for sharing this
God bless the trip/boat/crew
Always enjoy your videos James - many thanks to you for sharing your adventures with us
Incredible adventure and documentary
Fantastic journey and great job filming James!
Most enjoyable series, capt James!
It's like this, I'm never getting anywhere near these places in a wheelchair. So I really appreciate you taking the time to film and edit these video adventures so people like me at least get to see parts of the world that are literally out of bounds. Good man James.
wheelchair hs nothing to do with whether you can do this or not but money. If you have money everything is possible.
Thankyou all. Great outreach to those of us who can never get enough!
OMG ! James I feel so stupid that I posted a comment meant for someone else. I am so sorry !!! Just to let you know I watch your videos religiously and always look forward to new ones. I’m hoping to do what you do in a near future . Amazing job inspiring people, keep up the great work .
Brilliant sailors! Awesome video!
Brilliant. Well done James. You and Andy seem to share a vibe that shines in this video. Can’t tell whether the pilot whales or the icebergs were more exciting to see. And then the landfall in Greenland. kudos!
Awesome. This was hugely educational for our future trip to Iceland.
Iceland is one of my favorite places. Every time I'm there, I dream of arriving on my own boat. Those are some fierce waters to get there.
You really had some great weather for your passage so far to Greenland. Time to go find the rest of your trip and watch it.
Sailing to Greenland and to Iceland is not difficult if you go at the correct times of year
Great trip and great video James, thanks.
Sailing Vessel Mig channel mentioned you in their episode 40, talking about refitting cooktops. You should give them a shout.
Always cool stuff man!
Such a grounded and well rounded crew! Never a dull moment. great film work and editing as well James! haven't been this entertained and stoked in a while! thanks much
Absolutely loved watching this one James, you are truly one of the best sailing youtube channels out! The way that Andy explains the difference weather routings and how it all works is next level! Your filming skills are also next levels mate ! 👍 Thank you so much for bringing us along with you all on this adventure ❤️ stay safe and fair winds my friend.
Thans Danny! Talking about weather and routing is my favorite thing to teach, and I think THE single most important thing for offshore cruisers to understand. Being able to anticipate the weather allows you the confidence to be prepared for the next 24-48 hours and set the boat up properly. It's good fun :) // Andy
Excellent sailing, looked so much fun !
This was SO FUN! I know nothing about sailing..but am grateful you took my along!
Thank you James for sharing this awesome experience! High winds till next time LOVE 😘
As yourself being a captain of your own, I applaud his you give this captain to make all the decisions. Great work James !!!
A lot of people asked me before I left how I would be able to sail under another Captain. The main thing to know is I would never go to sea with a captain I didn’t trust. And leaving one’s ego at the dock opens up the possibility to learn stuff you didn’t know before.
Ooh aren’t you fancy and hitting the big time. As a geologist it will be a dream come true to sail there. Just gotta get experience first…like a lot
Very very nice Episode! Thx
Pretty cool. Really makes me want to sail there.
That first iceberg was breathtaking. Me? I'm replacing my kitchen sink today and tomorrow... Puts things in perspective. My advantage is I know what's out there and how to get there. Fair winds @@SailorJames
A rest for that little feathered soul, all grippy and sunny 😊. Inspiring video as always
I bought a 30ft Albin Ballad last year and plan to sail around this beautiful planet. I just stumbled across your channel, ive seen many. Delos, Bora Bora and many others . They all had bigger boats, but now I have seen your vids I have no more excuses...Thanks man, I like your vibe and settled energy. I wish you all the best. If your ever in Brittany France. hit me up
You should also check out @windhippiesailing and @samholmessailing all of us are doing this on small boats
I have seen Sam Holmes, but not wind hippie. i will check them out.@@SailorJames
Fantastic ! you are getting really good at filming theese adventures and narrating them into amazing adventure films ! great job James
YT did not notify me of this upload I had to come here and find it, just so you know. Good job on your video James.
Love your regular videos James. This is a fantastic change. Riveting stuff.
What a wonderful video. Thank you James
Amazing films so far. Can't wait for next week.
those are some big winches on that boat! I learned on a 36 footer....
edit: that first gyb after 30 minutes....reminds me of our first day on the course. A lot of rusty parts in that crew machine, but the skip saved it!
Epic, as always James, thank you!
i love ur videos, amazing adventures!!
Aw damn! I knew I was forgetting something tonight. Hope it was a great premiere.
Good video James
That made me very happy.
Nice to hear you laugh bro.
Amazing video
Can’t wait to see
Hi James and fair winds! What is that dormant rigging always hanging leeward next to the jib clew? Thank you. Ps I watched half film so far. Very instructive! I'll save the second half for tonight. Have a brilliant 2024
Lazy running backstay. The windward runner is always tensioned, and the leeward runner pulled forward and slack. // Andy
James - let’s see how putting a reef in on a boat this big is like, Captain - Oh fuck
I think its also more fun and safer sailing together with like-minded people than doing long ocean passages solo and alone.
There's definitely a pull for solo sailing. One of the big challenges I've yet to attempt. I'm jealous of James in a lot of ways. The one thing I miss the most about the type of sailing we do now with big crews is being alone on watch at night. Sometimes on longer passages I'll even send everyone down an hour early and 'steal' an hour on deck alone at 2am. That's when the magic really happens, the wonderful mix of nature, isolation, mindfulness, sleep deprivation, etc. It creates a magical sense of space and time. // Andy
@@59NorthSailing Thank You for Your reply, much appreciated! I get what You are saying and I imagine it must be wonderful (for some time). But for weeks, with nobody to assist in case of emergency or medical issues?
@@SailorJames Yes, its what You mostly do and it is interesting and fascinating to watch. But: Are You not afraid of getting hurt in rough weather or of a medical problem when going solo for weeks and far away from land? Then there is noone to assist or to take-over the helm...
I love the video. I wish my health would allow me to do this. What is the book you are reading about the spice trade?
I can’t recall the name of the book, it was about the history of the spice islands and was amazing
Great job on the video! How are you able to hear the skipper? He never raised his voice. Having never had a sailing lesson from an experienced instructor myself, I really like the way calmly said stuff to do when dealing with the vang. My boat doesn't have one so I don't know what they do or how to operate one.
Excellent music choice by the way. Maybe more classical stuff fits well with northern sailing.
🍻
Lazy jacks... just like furlers: helpful until they're a nuisance 😅😅😅
100%! But in both cases, especially on a big boat, probably worth it. // Andy
@@59NorthSailing and it looks like an extraordinarily well-maintained boat at that!
I noticed that in the main sail it said "Hold Fast" that means "Hang on" in Norwegian :-)
Nice sail James!
Why didn't he point the boat into the wind to raise/lower the main to avoid tangling in the lazy jacks?
The main was paid out point into the wind. It was the placement of the lazy jacks that was the issue, once he rerigged them it was fine
You can't head to wind offshore, common misconception. You NEVER want to flog sails in the wind to keep them nice, and the waves are typically too rough to head up, so you're reefing needs to work on all points of sail. Once this lazy jacks issue was fixed we were able to do that. // Andy
What's the book on the spice trade you were reading? Would you recommend it?
Can’t recall the name (left it on Falken for future crew) it was an amazing book on the spice islands
Welcome to Viking Hell! 😀
Wasn’t bad at all and doesn’t have to be unless you intentionally sail into bad weather
@@SailorJames you picked a Great Thumbnail. Can't wait to see the video👍
How cool is this? Cheers
Amazing James. You just keep getting better and better. National Geographic, you’ve got competition!
