  • The YM Success had a stability problem when it entered Port Phillip heads on the 14th of September 2022. The ship rolled severally and it was in the main shipping channel. The pilots skill was on display as the ship could have veered of course and struck the rocky shores at the entrance to Port Phillip, Victoria, Australia.

Glad this never happened when RMS Britanis of Chandris Line entered the heads at around 17:00 hours on 25/06/1973 during my youngest daughter's 2nd birthday party!

I was often told that offshore winds are often the worst when it come to navigation, even though the day look great for boating or shipping but the swells are still serious, not to mention the “rogue wave”.

Amazing video. All credit to the pilot and the crew for guiding her through safely.

The pilot has a simple line to guide her through, as set up by the Queenscliff light houses.
      A mug could do it.
They can only steer her through and hope for the best.
That ship looks prone to roll when fully loaded

More likely the skill of the helmsman who is attempting to maintain the heading given by the pilot.

this video is clear evidence of poor weather related risks planning with limited stability both by captain and pilot office. actual gm, rolling period and limits, resonanse zones, safe speed, course, swell height, period and direction etc MUST be considered before to avoid needs of extra pilot sklls application. in this situation real danger was not only loss of steering but lashing gear failure and cargo loss or even capsizing. yes there is always swell in this area but parameters differ and probably it was quite reasonable to wait for suitable ones. or even skip this call at all.
