  • Growing figs in Ohio is a challenge, but enjoyable crop to grow and can make them a great choice for beginners. These hardy plants can adapt well to the state's climate if you take a few precautions. We explain certain tools, tips and tricks to do so.
Tips for Growing Figs in Ohio:
Select the Right Variety: Choose cold-hardy fig varieties like ‘Chicago Hardy’ or ‘Celeste’ that can withstand Ohio’s winters.
Planting Location: Pick a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Figs need plenty of sunlight to thrive and produce fruit.
Winter Protection: While some varieties are cold-hardy, insulating the base of the plant with mulch or wrapping it with burlap can help protect it from severe winter temperatures.
Watering and Feeding: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Fertilize in early spring to boost growth.
Pruning: Regular pruning helps manage the plant’s size and encourages better fruit production.
Pest Management: Watch out for common pests like aphids and spider mites. Regular inspections and natural pest control methods can keep your plant healthy.
Propagation: Figs are also excellent for learning propagation techniques. You can start new plants from cuttings, which is a simple and effective way to expand your fig garden. Just take a cutting in late winter or early spring, and with proper care, it will grow into a healthy new plant.
Overall, figs are a rewarding choice for Ohio gardeners, and mastering their care and propagation can be a great introduction to plant growing.
Do Not Forget to Protect them from Winter Cold Damage!!!
