Julia Martinez de Rodrigues was a guitar student of Agustin Barrios, and niece of Francisco Salazar, a guitar lover, artist and great friend of the composer from Costa Rica. The work was written in this country in 1938, while Barrios was recovering from an illness and living in a house that Salazar had given him. “Julia Florida” gets its name, due to the speed with which the young teenager “bloomed”, becoming a beautiful woman. I just found this one by Kyuhee Park and now is my number 1 favorite performance of "Julia Florida." My second best is by Berta Rojas. Ms Park has a very personal, heartfelt way of playing rubato with a piece's time. It dynamically sounds felt internally in a way that serves the piece of music in a very emotion filled and moving way. She plays other pieces in this composition/heart/guitar unity of expression as well. I think this rare gift is how Ms Park in her way becomes one with the music while performing. Thank you for this beautiful expression of Barros's "Julia Florida." - John B.
I agree when comparing this performance to Berta Rojas' rendition. Rojas departs slightly from the barcarole rhythm that this piece embraces and I prefer Park's rubato here rather than Rojas' because Park's does not disturb that characteristic rhythm. It's interesting to note how Park manages the stretches required in this work, with liberal rotation of the upper arm and elbow to compensate for her small hands. Her fretting is immaculate as this video clearly shows.
Yes, excellent point about Park's compensation for small hands. I have this problem as well, though she is above my league. Her version of "Tango en Skai" is fabulous, on CZcams her version called "Fake Tango." Amazing dynamics with it. The runs are incredibly articulate. I appreciate that Park breaks the "rules" that be for her small hands, and still performs so immaculately... I still do like Berta Rojas "Julia Florida" rhythms as an alternative too, kind of extra syncopates it in a way I like in Bossas and Choros. Though Park retains the intended barcarole rhythm beauty of it so well. @@Fernwald84
I read somewhere that "Skai" is French for fake leather so that may be why Park named her version that way. Also, I didn't want to suggest that Park is breaking any rule with her arm and elbow movements--they are precisely what you should do to compensate for small hands, otherwise the fingering hand may turn away from its proper position--perpendicular to the strings.@@JohnB.6251
Interesting about "Skai" meaning "Fake"in French. Roland Dyens in composing it must have been playing with words, perhaps his facility for improvising, not wanting to pin it down in style too much. I actually like Parks version better than Roland Dyen's (RIP). Though both are fabulous. No worries about any rules. I was just making fun of others with the idea that there is a predetermined perfect way to play regardless of hand size, human differences. The note sound expressed what counts, without pain or tension. I was inspired to see that Park plays the way she does to make such beautiful music. @@Fernwald84

Beautiful tone, and I liked the way that you played the B minor section with the pull-offs (lovely), and then the hemiola section as you captures the 3/4-ish dance feel. Also everything moving toward the ending was just esquisite. In addition, I say thank you for a fine video in which i could see your fingering and change of camera angle in repeated sections. I am working my way through this with my teacher, moving onto page 2! Best wishes!

情感溢れる美しい演奏をありがとう。何年か前、カーネギー・ホールの演奏会直前に現代ギターサロンで開かれたミニコンサートの時に撮らせてもらった2ショット写真を今でも大切にしています。あの時、階段で、「カーネギー・ホール、頑張って下さい！」と直接声をかけることが出来たのは、私にとっては良い想い出です。そんなことを思い出しながら、この癒しのメロディーを聴いています。
