I’m very interested to hear your thoughts whatever they are on Aventus. It falls in and out of favour with me but I do like it, however I wouldn’t buy it anymore, haven’t for a very long time. I prefer Jeroboam Vespero
And I agree with you regarding the psychology. As for gender or when and where to wear a fragrance, or if I’m rich enough (I’m definitely not lol) I completely make my own rules as should everyone. Wear what makes you feel good in the moment. Sometimes that’s all we have.

I had samples of a 2021 batch of Aventus, and there wasn't much substance to it. However, I am almost ready to pull the trigger on Absolute Aventus-as good as that one is however, there are many other great ones from houses like Xerjoff, Parfums De Marley, etc., are exceptional and priced a bit more reasonably.
As far as I'm aware, anything with the scent of pineapple is going to be synthetic since, up until very recently, they have yet to figure out how to use natural pineapple oils in perfumes. I heard that a perfume company has figured out how to do it safely, but I am still waiting to hear how that experiment is going. So I am 99.9 percent sure that even the Chanel with the strong pineapple scent you mentioned early on is also synthetic. Synthetics in fragrances are good (I learned this late in my fragrance journey). Synthetics allow more creativity and safer fragrances that should not cause allergic reactions in most people, unlike, for example, natural oak moss, which can mess up a person big time. Oh by the way, pineapple oil would be hazardous, from what I've read, which is why it's not used.

I can’t believe there’s no oak moss in this. When I first tried this out I pictured a CEO wearing it. I NEVER got sexy from this. Actually I saw many fragrance reviews where women smelled this along with many other fragrances and they rarely preferred this fragrance over the others. Women don’t seem to like this fragrance. Personally I didn’t like it for me either but I recently tried it again and found it a bit more playful than what I remembered. I eventually got a dupe of this and realized that it works better for me at a deodorant spray than a perfume because of how simple the dna is. I understand why it’s popular though but I think i prefer a better iteration of this that’s sweeter and fruitier but I have yet to find it. Excellent review btw!

This is a masterful analysis of how gender is constructed by the market. Between this, Bleu de Chanel and Sauvage, I think there is something in ambroxan which smells vaguely like gasoline/axle grease/car repair workshops, and it plays into heteronormative nostalgia for a time when "real" men made a living with their hands and not at a desk in front of a screen.

I've bought and worn Aventus since 2010. Aventus was absolutely not the norm or mass appealing when it launched.
It only became this after IFRA banned the chemical for crude birch tar and the main smokey element was drastically reduced in the scent profile. From 2014 onward Aventus became much more fruit forward and fresh. 2010-2013 it could smell like an ashy campfire.
I still wear it because I love the scent. Old and current, it just smells great and more appealing than other "crowd pleasing" fragrences on the market.

  • @algebraist1997

Any perfumer will say it is a green chypre, not a fruity chypre. I tip my hat that you went by your nose and spotted it is far greener than fruity. On the topic of pineapple, the use of allyl amyl glycolate for this effect traces back to at least 1981 in the feminine oriental Vanderbilt by Sophia Grojsman. I don't know which year it was discovered but I think it was being used in detergents long before.

I agree with you that it's the orbiting issues that surround Aventus make it something it doesn't need to be. It's a fun, easy to wear, nice throwback-meets-modern scent. To your other point, I think there's an element of banal in everything and when its reputation outgrows its character the thing in question is ovah.

Dude, I like your content and of course share your passion and affinity for Chanel, the greatest fragrance house in the history of the world. I sort of agree with you that people can wear what they like(to each their own) but at the same time don't agree that fragrance is genderless. I mean as a collector and one that wears everything he owns, I will admit i have a few fragrances that lean slightly feminine, but I don't care, I love the smell and feel I can pull it off(usually with ones that have an element or two that are masculine which tend to dry down closer to unisex or on the masculine side of unisex given my body chemistry). A perfect example is Bois des Iles by Chanel(love your videos on it btw) which IMO opens tilting slightly feminine but still within the unisex range but in the dry down starts tilting slightly masculine owing to the woods. As far as I can tell and to my nose it was the greatest and classiest fragrance ever released from 1926 all the way to 1985 when Creed Green Irish Tweed came out. It probably still holds on to the title of classiest fragrance even though overall there have been a dozen or two fragrances that are better in terms of smell.
That aside there are fragrances that are clearly feminine in their vibe and feel and ones that are clearly masculine. Once again people can wear what they like but I know for damn sure I could not get away with wearing a very floral fragrance chiefly because it would not jive with my personality/persona. Furthermore the average man tends to wear moderately masculine to masculine fragrances while the average woman the opposite. There are outliers of course but this is the general trend and as such it is important to accept that broadly speaking it makes sense to have fragrances that are categorized as masculine and ones that are categorized as feminine(most fragrances fall into one of these two categories) with of course a good number that are clearly unisex.
On a side note, I was surprised to hear that you identify as a man. How you choose to present yourself is entirely your business, personally these superficial things don't matter to me, what is important is content of character and personality. You come off intelligent, very well researched and thorough in your reviews while your passion for fragrance is infectious...and once again your deference for Chanel definitely bodes well for you ;)
    Continue the great work!

Creed "Aventus" is far better quality than Bleu de Chanel and Dior Sauvage. There is a [reason] why Aventus is 3x the price. I can't believe how bad people's fragrance "palettes" are when comparing fragrances.. I think it's the price that scares them, so they pick the cheap ones instead of the good ones.

@patr70 We get it, you’re a fan of Creed and Aventus as you are all over the comments. But there is no need to put down other people’s preferences and taste as ‘bad’ simply because they are not aligned with yours or are not ‘expensive’.
As another commenter pointed out, this one is made of synthetics with no hint of even the allowable quantity (by IFRA) of oakmoss. I wonder then why they can’t keep the scent consistent across batches if they are using mostly synthetics; for the price, they could have patented the synthetics and use it exclusively for Creed. But 🤦‍♂️

I own bottle from 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021 and Aventus Absolute, i looove the older ones!!!
Honestly this was a milestone! It put niche on the map of a lot of people.
It was great, became trash, now its getting better again, still no comparison to older batches!
A good batch, wearing it in the spring morning is pure joy!
Btw, Bdc was released in 2015 i think, Aventus in 2012, or 2010.
Dior Sauvage is their take on this Dna, Chanels Blue is more blueish, Aventus/Sauvage more mineral, green, bitter.
There is a book out there, called creed scent of the century, i highly recomend it! Its about their real history and who really made their scents. They were a Great Company back in the day! 80s-mid10s! ❤
