  • Phase I Preliminary Engineering for the Old Galena Road Corridor from IL Route 29 to Cedar Hills Drive began in 2008. The entire corridor was expected to be split into 6 separate construction projects with a total estimated cost of $17.3 million.
In 2013, Peoria County applied for and received federal funding to construct the roundabout at the intersection of Old Galena Road and State Street. A roundabout was chosen for this location because it was the best configuration to account for any transportation changes in the future. The Illinois Department of Transportation has discussed extending IL Route 6 for many years. The IL Route 6 extension would include the construction of an interchange with Cedar Hills Drive, which would significantly reduce the amount of traffic on State Street and Old Galena Road. Additionally, State Street suffers from frequent flooding that requires frequent closure of the road. The roundabout gives much more flexibility to future changing traffic patterns in the area versus a signalized T-Intersection. The roundabout was constructed in 2015 for $1.8 million.
In 2017, Peoria County again applied for and received federal funding for Old Galena Road. In addition to the awarded federal funding amount of $2.5 million, the County used $1.64 million from an accumulation of the County’s annual federal funding appropriation of $600,000 per year for the intersection of Old Galena Road and Cedar Hills Drive. The project also included the construction of Old Galena Road from Cedar Hills Drive to Boy Scout Road. The project was completed in 2018 for $3.7 million.
In 2020, Peoria County and other local agencies in Illinois received funding from the REBUILD Illinois bond program. Peoria County was able to utilize REBUILD funds and an accumulation of the County’s annual federal funding appropriation to combine the final three sections of the Old Galena Road corridor into one construction project. This combination of the final three sections allowed the County to complete the entire corridor much quicker with significant cost savings. The project encompassed Old Galena Road from Boy Scout Road to the roundabout, and from the roundabout to IL Route 29. The project was completed in 2023 for $5.0 million.
The total cost for the Old Galena Road corridor, including construction, design engineering, and construction engineering was $12.2 million. This was $5 million less than anticipated.
