  • In this short video I share a few examples from my sketchbooks in which I've used old book pages along with my watercolours. I then show how I prepare a page from an old dictionary using a watercolour ground to make an interesting base for watercolour sketches and paintings.

    This is exactly what I was looking for - not necessarily for watercolor painting, but to use an old book as a journal. (It kind of negates the point of it for me to attach paper to write on to every page, though I do like doing the layering in some places!) I'd never heard of watercolor ground; I think it'll be perfect for my project. Thank you - and I'm so glad I found your channel. I love your work!

      That sounds such an interesting idea! I'd love to hear if the watercolour ground works for your journal. (It does create a slight textured surface but if carefully applied it can be smoother. Some apply it with a roller but I've always used a brush because I like a bit of texture for my painting)
      Glad you've found it interesting and thanks for your kind comment 😊

    Brilliant! I'm so glad CZcams showed your channel, for I simply love your art style. CZcams needs more artists and far less swatching.

    Makes me think about taking a large piece of canson xl and adding several different pages to it, treating it with the watercolor ground (a pot came with my DS split primary set and I’ve never used it) and cutting the page down after I’ve done the whole thing.

    • @IngridHillArt
      @IngridHillArt  Před 2 lety +2

      Thanks Tricia I'm so pleased you found it interesting. I'll have to film myself painting on these surfaces at some point! I find painting on the ground does feel a little different to on watercolour paper but wet into wet seems to work fine.

    Thank you so much for sharing this idea. Could you explain the difference between using the watercolour ground and a clear gesso? Would clear gesso work the same way?

    • @IngridHillArt
      @IngridHillArt  Před rokem +1

      Hi, Although Gesso does work, I tend to prefer using the watercolour ground for this sort of painting. The ground has a slightly rough surface, which I find helps washes key to. Whereas I find Gesso smoother, so the paint slips more on the surface.
      I use Gesso or watercolour moulding paste with a palette knife when I want to create a textured surface.🎨

    Very interesting, impressive. May I ask why you needed to do the translucent layer before the white covering layer. Could you not have started with the white. Thanks very much

    • @IngridHillArt
      @IngridHillArt  Před rokem +1

      Thanks Chris, yes the white could have been done first. I often like to use a transparent layer first to make sure everything has had a thin layer but without hiding the book page. I then can add as much or little of the white to cover areas as I'd like to, without leaving any sections unprepared. 🎨😊
