- This seven-day trek marks the longest hiking trip Oda and I have done. Spending a week immersed in the mountains and dining on local food offers such a lovely peek into life in Switzerland. I've always felt that walking through a place is one of the best ways to get to know it. The Via Alpina proved me right.
This summer I start my great adventure across Switzerland: hiking the Via Alpina green trail. The middle section of the Swiss Alpine Pass Route stretches from Engelberg to Griesalp and is the most scenic section of this grand hike. Our path takes us 99km from Obwalden through the Bernese Alps to walk alongside rivers, glaciers, and Switzerland's tourist attractions.
As this year's Via Alpina Explorer, I will hike 260km across Switzerland from Sargans to Kandersteg, climbing 15 000m over 9 alpine passes. Over the next three months, I will hike every other weekend, building to an eight-day hike in August. It will be full of wild camping, Swiss culture, and physical challenges.

So I got super inspired by many videos of hiking and wild camping the Via Alpina, and the most inspiration and motivation I got to actually go do it, was from your videos 😇
I just did 4 days of hiking, starting from Meiringen and ending in Griesalp. It was the first time hiking alone. It was the first day hiking multiple days in a row. It was the first time wild camping. It was a hike of many firsts 😂
But with spirit and the dedication I got from your videos, I made the 4 days. And I am already ready to come back for more 🎉
I just rewatched this video as I arrived in Griesalp just two days ago and hearing the little post-auto horn blasting at 2:47 in your video already gave me the chills and the desire for more.
I’ll be back one day, to do the whole thing. But until then, I’ll keep coming back to do parts 🤗🤗

Ah, and now being further along in the video, I recognize exactly where you camped down from Kleine Scheidegg, because I had set up my tent around there too 🙈 After buying a block of cheese in that exact same fridge you filmed a little before. I ended up going down to the farm whose fridge it was and asked if I could pitch my tent in the empty meadow, which they allowed. Gotta love Switzerland 🤩

I'm glad to hear you will come back to do more. The first few sections of the Via Alpina are stunning and less populated since there are no roads/funiculars - making it more peaceful. Maybe something for your next visit back :) Where are you travelling from?
@@susannep9290 This was a funny one - a complete accident! The place we planned to camp was actually forbidden, so late in the evening, we were wandering around trying to find a flat enough place. And the cheese is such a treat! Glad to hear the fridge is still there.
My wife, our sons, and I had lunch in that little yellow cafe in Wengen years ago. A festival was taking place. Afterwards we took a tram up to Mannlichen and walked to Kleine Scheidegg. A delightful day.
What a beautiful memory! Do you remember what festival it was?
I don’t. But it was fun. There were people in traditional clothing playing alpenhorns, and others in a procession shaking large cowbells, which were surprisingly loud. There were games for children, and food booths, and various displays. The main street was closed to traffic, and a race was going on. Every 15 minutes or so the runners ran through the town on the main street. And the walkways and shops were crowded.
Several years later we went back to Wengen in late September, between Summer and ski season, and were quite surprised to find almost no one in the streets. Went on some really nice hikes during that trip too.
Thank you again for putting this together. Been on my bucket list for years (live in Switzerland, and do plenty of local hiking). I think this spring/summer I'll make this happen.
That sounds lovely :) better make it summer to late summer to avoid the snow on the mountain passes. Although, with the little snow we’ve had this year you can probably start in June :)
Brilliant! Very nice footage of the scenery. I did part of that trail, just going the other direction 😁...kandersteg - griessalp - lauterbrunnen - grindelwald - meiringen as a 4 days trip ...want to do the section to via Engelberg to Liechtenstein this year
Sounds great! I wonder what the Via Alpina looks like going the other way ☺️ it’s less touristy and full than the Bernese alps. There were times when there was almost no one else on the trail at Altdorf and Foo Pass. Have a wonderful time!
I am going in June and have only 3 days, but wanted to hike part of the same route. Which would you recommend?
@@rathmanb when in June are you going? The higher passes can still have snow in early June and are trickier to pass. So you will want the lower passes ⛰
@@rathmanb the most spectacular section of that trail is in my opinion between kandersteg and grindelwald, which is doable in 3 days and has some options to skip some steep ascents with ropeway or train in case the daily amount of altitude meters exceeds personal fitness. And, yes, since you get very close to 3000m on this section, it can be still snow up there. The Eastern part of the trail is stunning too though and as mentioned less frequented.

I did 9 days many years ago. Within the last 2 years 4 days so far is the longest.
Wow! Nine days seems long :) Did you have to carry all your food with you?
@@InWilderPlaces We resupplied halfway. It was 1988 and I was 13. It was a 50 mile Boy Scout trip, so we didn’t cover much mileage per day.

Great trip! How much were the overnight stays in the huts and do you recommend them over camping in a tent?
The mountain huts I stayed in varied from 40 CHF per night to 80 CHF. These can be expensive since they are located higher in the mountains where it’s more tricky to get resources.
I loved camping and spent more time sleeping in my tent than a hut. I saved the hut stays for rest days or if a bad storm was coming. But the huts did offer a good break.
If the mountain huts are a bit pricey, you can also explore backpackers in the valleys or towns.
