SRAM Replaced My 30 Year Old Recalled RockShox Mag 20 Forks

- I was working on an old Bianchi mountain bike that had RockShox Mag 20 forks. The forks would bottom out without a lot of weight. They are air/oil forks, and I thought they would just need some more air, maybe oil. I started looking online for service docs, but found a recall notice for these forks from 1995. These forks were made in 1992. Apparently the fork crown was prone to cracking. I tried calling the number on the recall notice, but it wasn't any good. I found a recall number of SRAM's site. Keep in mind, RockShox wasn't even a part of SRAM until 2002. So I called SRAM to ask about the recall on these 30 year forks, not expecting much. They took my name and address, and said they were going to send me some new forks. And they did. I was amazed.
FYI, I called them as a regular customer. I did not tell them I was RJ The Bike Guy, or mention anything about having a CZcams channel.
Here is the recall notice for these forks:

A few years ago, I bought an early 1980's Bianchi touring bike. In researching it, I found a potential recall on the forks from about 1990. I contacted Bianchi trying to confirm whether my forks were actually dangerous to use or not - not expecting much. Once I started talking to the right person, they apologized that they didn't have a replacement 1" threaded fork for me, but if I shipped my frame and fork to them they would send me a brand new frame and fork - a 2019 Bianchi Volpe that I love!
Wow !
Not sure what happened. Don’t really cycle anymore, but this guy helped me with a lot of random obscure problems. Always straight to the point!
RJ, are you okay? 😢
That is what customer service used to be, but that is truly unheard of in this day and age. Thanks SRAM for being a trusted supplier!💯👍
Shimano and Microshift dont that kind of service.
Boy you got that right .

Looks like it's been a while since your last video... Hope all is well over yonder, RJ. 👍🚴
I had a Trek 520 frame break after 58000 miles. I didn't have the original receipt, the shop I bought it from at was long gone, the dealer didn't think they would replace it under warranty as I couldn't prove I was the original owner. I called Trek tech support and the guy said "Send me some pictures of where you've been on the bike". So I did:: all over the US, England, France etc. Trek gave me a new frame and fork under warranty. which I thought was cool.
Wow !
RJ, we are wondering about you! Hope that you are alive and well brother! Hope we hear from you soon!!!
I used to be a big Fox fan, but they've just gotten beyond the realm of what I can afford for a fork. RockShox became my next favorite for continuing to offer good quality at affordable prices. I'm not talking about the OEM stuff that comes on cheap bikes, but their aftermarket forks. Fox pricing starts at what a whole entry-level MTB costs. That's just asinine. Good on SRAM to honor the warranty. I had a similar experience with Park Tools where I inquired on ordering a part that I lost for my scale and they just asked me for my address and had one in the mail to me the next day for free.
If you like Fox forks, but can't afford them, just get a Marzocchi. The Bomber Z2 is a Fox 34 with a few minor downgrades. (Marzocchi is now owned by Fox )
RJ you’ve been quite on YT for a few months. Miss you mate hope you are well. Much love from 🇬🇧
That's what I call customer service!
Hey, RJ it's been quite a while since your last video. I hope you're doing okay, just let us know if you can. Maybe a message in the community section of your channel.
Take care!
Hey RJ. Hope you're doing well. 🇺🇸👍
RJ has a new post on his FB page at Jan, 2024, I think he's okay.
Great to give them a shoutout, given your large viewership! 👏
That looks like the fork I just bought for my 94 GT Zaskar. I got a RockShox Recon Silver TK. Getting ready for the rebuild on this classic MTB.
as small as an air pump is, the hose on my Bell "Air Attack" pump broke. I Googled and found a contact and asked them if I could purchase a hose. They don't have parts, the agent asked my address and in a week or so "boom" a new pump arrived... newer, more capacity. Very worthy of the Bell Company.
Fantastic service alot of companies should take notice
Can't complain about that for sure, top draw service . I've got a pair of those forks so hopefully you'll do a vid on how to service them at some point in the future.
That's pretty amazing. I was already starting to more seriously consider SRAM for a new road bike and will be picking up some of their TIME Xpresso pedals next.
Good on SRAM, I have an old 1-inch threadless RockShox fork from an old Bontrager. I had a custom rigid fork made for it instead. I'll have to dig it out and check serial # but I think it's even older than yours. Good info, thanks!
I hope you’re well rj.
That sure is great customer service, even if recalls don't end. I think RST still make suspension forks with 1" steerer tubes. If you find a good replacement for the old fork, I would love to see a video. Thumbs up and thanks a ton!
I'm looking for the same unicorn. Nothing so far until I found your comment and located said suspension forks with disc brakes. Thanks so much for your comment. I have a 1986 Diamond Back Arrival since new and I'm wanting to update it.
@@LemonySnicket-EUC Sweet!
Shimano still honors crank recalls from a similar period.
I have an old US made Gary Fisher that got a new crank about 30 years after the original purchase.
Wow, that’s phenomenal!
I Replaced the insides on mine. They work great now.
Wow. What good people, SRAM are. 👏👏👏👏
You ever think about doing a showcase of some of your personal bikes you ride? That might make a fun video. Thanks for the content RJ.
That IS cool, RJ
Wow! That's Great. I like SRAM, it seems like they really think through the details when they make components.
well they certainly did,nt look at the details on this set up 1 inch tube just send 1/18 tubed fork useless garbage
Maybe . Maybe that's all they had. A 1 inch tube is an old design. If they had one and didn't send it I would agree with you. Maybe they were trying to show good faith and know RJ the bike guy works on all kinds of bikes.
@@theresnobodyhere5778 They probably didnt even have to honor this recall after 30 years, yet they did the best they could by sending out their most similar fork for free.
What more do you expect?
@@obi-wankenobi9871 A company has to honor a safety recall as long as said company exists.
@@obi-wankenobi9871 i would expect something that fitted ,not saying they wont be used if you repair bikes ,but it dont solve any problems sending the wrong no good forks they could have sent a frame to go with them then that would have realy impressed me oh and maybe they are bound by consumer law to replace them a recall is last thing any business would want to get involved with and time is irrelevant do you think they doing out of the goodness of their heart dont think so
RCB Fred here RJ. Recalls don’t end. I did one for a Craftsman radial arm saw about 12 years later. This is from the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission ) site. More info there: “There is usually no end date to a product recall. Even if you don't learn of the recall for a year or more, you should follow the guidance in the recall notice the CPSC issues. Call the company at the toll-free number or contact the company through its website, both of which are listed in CPSC's news release.”
To continue.. it’s not really customer service but I think it’s required by law.
Thumbs up for them. For sure the mountains of money they got selling 1x X transmissions worldwide offsets this sort of action.
I had a Paris Roubaix with a solid cast aluminum fork. RECALL! Seems there were fatalities from stress fractures splitting at the bottom of the headset. The bike was long since worn out when a replacement arrived (unannounced, however the bike was from a pro shop) in the mail. Late 70's.
That is just amazing! :D Too bad you couldn't fit it on the bike though :(
Best mech-channel in my feed! BIG UPS
Geez I’m really impressed with Sram. I was able to use a product of theirs for the first time last year and I was impressed with it! So glad to see they are a reputable company.
yeah, spare part availability is pretty decent, too - had a big suckdown problem on my 2013 Reba. Bought a full service kit and a new air shaft (as the old one had a cracked head), installed everything and the fork feels like new 😀
I actually bought another Reba as they're harder and harder to come by in 26", and $140 was a real bargain for a decent fork!
Rock Shox ROCK THE HOUSE. Excellent customer service , dya think!
That is completely and totally cool , that sram did that 👍😁🚴🚴 wow
Hey RJ, I love your videos, especially the ones where you make your own tools. Like many people who's parents didn't know any better, I have a pile of worthless old box store bikes in the back yard. I'm looking for ways to put them to use. I'm probably going to turn one of them into a truing stand if I can figure out a good way to do so, maybe cut some of them up to make bike racks or even a bike stand. If you have any ideas on how to recycle them in a useful manner and what parts I should maybe try to salvage, I would love to hear them. And please feel free to use any of these ideas for more video content.
Amazing!!
Thank you sir from India 👍
SRAM is a great company with great products. I only use SRAM chains on my 32 year old Resto-Mod Schwinn Crosscut
If it is a government mandated recall, there is no time limit. But they usually collect the recalled part. If you own a 1984 car with an unresolved recall, they have to fix it even today.
Technically there's no time limit specified for safety recalls, but legally speaking, the limit is within a 'reasonable' period. It's not unreasonable people would still have a bicycle from the 90's still in their garage they ride once in a blue moon, so SRAM did the right thing here. On the other hand, expecting a Dodge dealership to fix your '84 Dodge probably won't happen. Parts have been out of production, ownership of the brand has changed, product life expectancy has long been exceeded, etc. Ultimately it comes down to whether they want to fight it in court or just suck it up and find a solution...the latter is significantly cheaper, so that tends to be the way they go (unless addressing the safety recall cannot be performed - i.e. replacing recalled struts in a vehicle whose frame is rotted out nothing with no mounting point).
That’s awesome!!
Hello RJ. Hope you're ok. I've seen you posted on Facebook in January 2024 but what about the CZcams channel? Its been 1 year and I hope you don't have a problem that you can't talk about on the internet and if you have, I hope it will be fixed soon and you will be fine!
That IS pretty cool of them. As you point out in the description, this recalled fork isn't even a SRAM product.
When SRAM acquired RockShox, they acquired not only their assets but also their liabilities. That's just business law.
Hey rj, i recently bought an old Columbia bike. I restored it visually and looks beautiful but having trouble with the 3 speed sturmey archer stuff and the brakes. The thing only works on one speed and doesnt go into gear on anything else. Should i ditch the 3 speed and keep it single speed?
RJ, I recently came across a frame just like that one, in the white colorway. Unfortunately the paint job was too far gone (lots of DIY jobs) so I sacrificed the decals and repainted it. When I bought it for $50, it was set up as a 700c fixie. Having started rebuilding it, I find that 700c wheels have clearance for days, but they don’t fit the cantilever mounts without adapters. My intention had been a drop bar bike with 700cx38 tires, but I slapped some 26”x2.125 wheels in there yesterday and they fit like a glove. Now I’m torn about the bars and the rest of the build. What’s your professional opinion here?
Hey RJ I was wondering if you could make a video explaining on how to straighten a bent rim to pretty much straight please and thank you
another good one for warranty is BOA, lifetime warranty on all BOA lace systems. i bought some used shoes with a frayed wire lace. got on BOA's site, sent a photo my damaged lace ssytem along with what model my shoes were and they sent out a new left and right lace system free of charge.
even better is the new fasteners have slightly longer laces which made the shoes easier to get on as the S-works trail shoes you usually have to un loop the lace to get them on as it's to short
I was wondering if I can use a v rim for a disk rim
Thanks
As always good video.
If you can let us know where to buy 1” threaded forks.
Thank you
I plan to use a rigid fork that I took off another bike a few years ago.
@@RJTheBikeGuy thanks for the quick response. Are there any online stores that sell 1” threaded forks
Not rigid?
SRAM is like, "anything for RJ😍"
They didn't know who I was.
@@RJTheBikeGuy WOW. Happy to know proper customer services still exists.
I doubt that fork was stock for the Bianchi. You could try some rigid fork options, and maybe the crowns were cracking because of the bottoming out you mentioned, and perhaps it just needs a better spring or other rebuild. Good luck, great story and now you have a new free fork for another frame.
I am pretty sure it came with a rigid fork.
@@RJTheBikeGuyRST has 1 inch steerer tube forks for this. Someone in the comments posted the info and I followed up on them and will make a purchase for my project.
Well, you are a youtuber, sir...ofcourse, they will be more than happy to promote themselves to you by giving extra services.
Hey , quick question i bought a used bike snd i noticed that it has a shimano fh-mc18 free hub but the problem is the sound of it is very quiet , is that a bad thing? And is there a way to have its sound back without taking out the hub abart ? Because i don't have the tools for that. And thanks in advance
That is very impressive. The other company that really impressed me with this is the one that sells bike locks, and is named after a material in fiction. Replaced and shipped a broken lock dust cover for a chainlock across the world without question, the lock was about 2-3 years old at that point. It must be a new version because the fittings have larger bolts in them and the plastic is thicker.

Hi RJ The Bike Guy, I have a stuck quill stem and I don't know how to handle it. Actually not the stem itself, I could remove it, but the end of the quill stem that is bolted to the long bolted. It's stuck hardly
Greetings RJ the Bike Guy. I recently bought a used Diamondback for my grandson. It takes a 22 mm seat post, and I cannot find one. 22.2 is too large. I've already tried that. I found a metal shop that sells 22 mm aluminum tubing. Would that suffice?
Cool 😎🎉
Are u alive?
Lmao, I put that same new fork on my 95 schwinn (been having issues finding uncut vintage forks to fit my tall frame)... It's a little ridiculous looking, but works well. Kinda reminds me of my old marzocchi downhill shock (rip) I did need to get a longer kick stand. My only real complaint is there's a little rock on hard front breaking, not dive which is also there like any suspension fork... but rock... Going to try a new set of headset bearings but think it's actually in the fork itself due to the geometry of the frame.
Круто, Вот это ФИРМА!!!! Молодцы.
I also installed a 3mm spacer behind my freewheel and as I began tightening the freewheel back up. I noticed a non stop. Which means stripping danger. And I'm glad I stopped tightening up my freewheel. Because when I unscrewed it and checked the threads on my wheel the first one or two threads were coming out. Mag wheels are expensive. So I had to scrap that idea. When I inspected the freewheel itself. I noticed it's threads in the furthest back do not go all the way to the back. It's like a 1.5mm gap. Probably a design to prevent exactly what happened when I installed that 3mm spacer. To keep the threads from being stripped out when tightened under extreme torque. Not that I did that in the first place being that the freewheel is self tightening. Just a heads up folks. Don't risk stripping out your freewheel threads on your wheels.
Sweet
I've looked all over for a 1inch version fork of any kind with at least disc brake mounts. I've been told a 1 inch version suspension fork was non-existent. Wow !
You can have a set lowered I am sure, or figure it out yourself. But yea, when rock shox suspension forks came out, (revolutionizing the Mt. Bike industry in 87 I believe.), they started at 2" travel. As you put your weight on the bike, you do want the suspension to sag some to, so it will react to holes too. With 1" travel, it would almost be rigid.
It would be great if velo orange made a retro suspension fork
with a disc mount
Dude, I didn't even know Sram has something to do with Rock Shocks😊
Wow....The way customer service used to be unheard of today
Above and Beyond, and it recently happened ? I thought customers no longer count , wrong
Hey bud, do you have like a tutorial of fixing chain rub in the front derailleur in the 3rd gear largest cog. I did everything to fix it setting the limiting screw and adjust the cable but still no fix :(
I had similar problems with the front 3 sprockets which turned out to be the bottom bearing bolt that needed tightening pulling in the peddle sprocket just enough it stopped rubbing. On the small front to small back sporkets or large front to large back it can rub because of the chain angle. Rubbing can be unavoidable.
That's not really the gears you should be using or would use so switch to a more centred chain gear.
Also pull gear cable out and check it. Might be jamming so not moving all the way.
Side note
Because I'm mostly road riding I switched front sprockets from 3 to 2 with a larger 40 tooth and 48 tooth using the original 3 chan gear and front derailleur.
How difficult could it have been to make a steerer tube that matches the old fork connect with the better specs?
I don't have a metal lathe for one. Finding the right metal stock. Machining it down to high tolerances. Not easy unless you are machinist with a machine shop.
@@RJTheBikeGuy not saying YOU should do this.... I'm saying that the company that has the resources could have this done. That's all. 😊
How to repair brake lines on rim?
Safety recalls do not expire, because they're a matter of safety (to the consumer) and liability (to the company). Shimano has a recall from 1997 (for the FC-CT90, FC-M290, and FC-MC12 cranks) that they still honor, for example. The only thing here that surprises me is that they allowed you to keep the dangerous item. They should have required you to send them either the fork or proof of its destruction.
I was thinking similar, they really should have proof of destruction. Not sure how they let that slip.
I was surprised he got to keep it too.
I had a problematic crankset on d Marin Bobcat Trail 1995, never managed to get an answer from Shimano about their recall.
@@zoobab28 A lot of brands prefer their recalls to be processed through authorized dealers, not direct to consumer. But was it just "problematic", or was it actually one of the recalled models?
@@mattgies i contacted a Shimano Service Center. I had a Friend at Shimano Europe, i will retry.
This probably isn't the right place for this and I'm sorry about that but I can't find any videos on how to install new gear cables and a chain on a bike without any like everywhere and wants to start with what to do in the first place like shifting to the smallest or biggest anything and it's not getting me anywhere I need to start from f***** up and go from there do you have any suggestions

Hello rj... I have the same fork ... witch number did you call? And where is the serial number on this forks? Thanks
@@wilmersanchez6547 See description. The serial # is on the inward facing top part of the right fork lower.
In our sue happy society *NOT* honoring a safety related recall, regardless of age, is the business equivalent of Russian roulette. What surprises me is that they didn't require you to turn in the defective parts or at least provide an affidavit of destruction. The whole idea of a safety recall is to eliminate the hazard.
what fork did they send you btw?
What was you old Suspension fork a Rock Shox what . I have a 26 inch , Threaded 1 " fork with V- Brakes and Specialized also made my bike with suspension forks , which is what I would like to swap my solid forks to ( suspension forks )
You need my 21r.
Damn... I could use those forks on my bike... '; o
I’d go rigid on that old bike.
why did you stop making videos?
Nit: even if the fork travel is roughly 4 inches more, it should settle at least an inch when sitting on the bike - thus resulting in around 3 inches taller.
The longer fork likely will work better downhill or flat ground. But depending on the original geometry from the '90s, this might not work for climbing. I had to replace a 60mm with 100mm travel fork on a early Trek 9900 carbon frame and it worked well - despite shifting the rider weight more over the rear tire and thus reducing weight on the front tire while climbing (more likely to "wheelie" then). But the pitch at which it would "wheelie" was steep enough that I was better off walking. :)
25%+ of sag would be plenty, especially on a coil fork (which this one probably is, looks like an xc30/32). ½ inch of sag would be more realistic here.
I am the original owner of a Specialized Rockhopper (early 90's) and the headset is cracked... the lifetime warranty is not available for me...cuz the store I bought it from closed at that location. And I paid for it in cash and there is no credit card number on file for the purchase.... it would have been nice to get an update...but oh well. Got a lot of seat time on it.
I am pretty sure that once a user safety issue has been acknowledged. It has to by law be honoured indefinitely. As their liability to user safety never stops. Though companies today try to get around it by making things obsolete over a few years rather than 10 plus years. Though safety has no statute of time limit on it.
hats off to SRAM nice job folk. M.ost companies are trash and all about $$$ you will continue to get my money not only for how good your products are but for this.
It's nice that they honored the recall, but a little odd that they sent you a completely incompatible part.
Who did you call at SRAM??
Does anyone make 1/8" oversize bearing cups that will work with older bike head tubes that will eliminate the necessity to ream the head tube 1/8" to make it work with the larger diameter fork tube?
I think you may not have addressed recall correctly. Try again and get right dimensions to replace recalled forks with correct size
Woot
Ohh, I had one of those forks in my shed for 10 years or so until I recycle it... bad move.
