The Garmin Varia RVR315, RTL515 and RCT715 all detect vehicles coming up behind you while you are cycling on the road.
Outstanding gift idea, or get one for yourself and thank me later.

These radar detectors show you where the cars are and their speed relative to your position.
Once you ride with one of these detectors on your bike, you will never want to ride again without it!

For me this is a must have item. I can't turn my head to look back and I can't hear things coming from the rear most of the time. I had my first radar about a year when I dropped it on my hard title kitchen floor and broke it. Without hesitation I jumped online and purchased another unit. I would never be without it. I'm not a fan of the phone app because to sounds are too distracting. I would like to have different sound options to make it more pleasant.
Charles, thanks for watching the video and sharing your thoughts! I agree, this is probably the most useful safety device I have. My wife gave it to me and I was not a big fan until I started using it. Now I won’t ride without it!

I wounder if this gives false positives for people with radar detectors in their cars. Neat tool.
That’s a good question! I don’t know, but if it does, and it causes drivers to slow down, then I am all for it!!
Try a rearview mirror...this is not going to tell you if you are going to be hit...
Thanks for the comment. You are correct, it will not tell you if you are about to get hit, and I had the exact same argument when my wife wanted me to purchase this at the bike store. She ended up giving it to me for Christmas so I decided to go ahead and try it anyway. I now will not go riding without it. I do use it in conjunction with a “sunglasses mirror”, which I also will not ride without. The radar visually AND Audibly lets you know every time cars are coming and how many. It lets you know that it is time to look in the mirror. It works when you are tucked in a descent, out of the saddle on a hard climb, or just daydreaming, all times when looking in the mirror is not happening.
If you try one for a while, you may agree with me that it is a great safety device!

What's battery life like...
The manufacturer says up to 7 hours, my rides are typically 2-3 hours and have never seen the low battery indicator (flashing yellow).
Thanks for the question!
@davescycling
Thanks for getting back so quickly...
I have Garmin Edge 705, 1000, 1030 & now 1040...
I purchased Garmin Varia RTL 500 in 2015...
I like shape, design & light display on the model RTL 500 more than any of the models released since then...
It's rectangular in shape & when connected sits horizontal, taking up less space on seat tube compared to current models...
The RTL 500 has light features that do not exist on newer models...
Taillight Modes and Intensity
The Varia RTL 500 default light mode is flash mode.
The four middle LEDs flash at all times.
‼️‼️‼️‼️
When a vehicle is detected, additional LEDs progressively turn on and the flashing increases frequency as the vehicle gets closer to your bike.
‼️‼️‼️‼️
You can switch the device to solid mode by pressing the device key.
Varia RTL Battery life
Up to 5 hr. in constant illumination mode
Up to 8 hr. in flash mode
Up to 10 hr. leds off
💥💥💥💥
I always use RTL 500 with leds off and still get 8 to 9 hrs from 2015 until now 2023 November...
I'm Very Happy, Surprised & Amazed The RTL 500 Still Works, But Even More; The Battery Still Works & Still Holds Charge That Can Easily Last 8 to 9 hrs when all leds are off...

All My Edges 705, 1000, 1030 & of course 1040 still work...
I think I got Edge 705 back in 2008 or 2009...
None of My Garmin Devices That I Currently Own Has Ever Failed
2008 : Edge 705
2014 : Edge 1000
: Remote
2015 : RTL 500
2017 : Edge 1030
2023 : Edge 1040
Had The UT800 Smart Light, but returned it because it was not bright enough...
Garmin Makes Very Good Products that are durable & last...
The only device I experienced lots of issues when it was first released was the 1000... There were lots of bugs & software defects...
I replaced it once...
I Retired Edge 705 once purchased 1040 Bundle...
I used to Ride With Two Bike computers all the time
705 & 1000
705 & 1030
1030 & 1040
Lately only 1040...
1040 Has Very Fast Touch Screen Response ( 10 Data Fields ) & Probably 10 Screens Per Proffile...
Syncing, Real Time Updates Are Fast Two...
Power Up, Restart, Etc Are Exceptional Too...
I Got 1040 Bundle for ~680.00
Thanks for all that good info!! Garmin does make great products! I love my Varia. I have Cycliq cameras also.
