I randomly took Taxus cuttings and accidentally almost killed them. And I explain how to take Yew cuttings
Just a short video today. I did something stupid and almost lost a bunch of succesfull cuttings. What I did? Has this happened to you? Drop me a line and share your experience
A-ha! I got two yews in a parking lot I take care of and one has berries and the other doesn't! I suspected they were male and female. Thanks for that info. I almost cut them down because they were very old and didn't have a lot of green on them. I gave them cow manure and after a year they have come back to life! They are not 100 percent yet but I am glad I let them live.
:) Instead of cutting them down, offer them to someone for bonsai!
@GrowingBonsai I did think of that but they looked like Bonsai like they were without pruning (aside from cutting off dead branches). The dirt in that parking lot was just awful, awful, awful! It reminded me of the dirt in a vacuum cleaner bag. Besides no nutrients to speak of from rotted vegetation like you would get anywhere else other than an urban environment, the soil was loaded with gravel, sand and salt from the snow plows. These poor shrubs where in shrub hell! I greatly admire these shrubs for living in such harsh conditions! They are tough. Besides all that, they are OLD!

oh no, I repotted my yew cutting because the soil was too dense and I pressed down on the soil! It hadn't rooted after being in the previous pot for a while (5-6 months) and wanted to repot it with some more porous soil... Hopefully it is fine
Hello Jelle! I didn’t thought about the sweet berries when I collected a yes this spring. I have to check next summer if I got an female or male plant. Maybe I have to get some cuttings 😍 thanks for the video!

Yes, they root very easily. I tried with half a pencil thickness and they still root. Also, they admit very hard root pruning.
Great to hear. I have a bunch of more mature taxus, and they handle a lot of root pruning, once accustomed to living in a pot. The transition from the field into a pot is often more dificult!

Thank you for posting this informative video. Can you tell me how long it takes for the roots to appear? I took 3 cuttings last summer, but no sign of any roots yet. Thank you.
Thinking back, the video of styling the female tree was in summer. So I took the cuttings in summer, and was cleaning up in winter. So probably less than 6 months. As long as they are vivid green, they are still good to go.

My only regret is starting this hobby so late in my life ,I am 56 wish I was 20 years younger then I will have more time to see my seedlings mature, I know is a long and slow process I could go and buy mature trees but then I miss watching it grow learning how to wire and repot .

Hi Michael, I have found a simple solution to dealing with age and development time needed: I do not worry about it, and just enjoy the process. Lots of younger people starting the hobby who will be happy to get some plants that have had a decent preparation for bonsai :)

Hi Ben, I use lots of different components. In winter I expect to do a video. In this case, pumice, diatomous earth and bark as core substances.

Does the season of the year influence? When is the best time to take the cuttings?
I am not fully sure. I would guess late-winter to be good, but I have absolutely no reason for this.

I’ve got some yew cuttings back in February/March and planted them more or less as you did… they haven’t wilted yet, but no growth so far… shall I risk popping them out of the floor and check the roots?

I did it all the time but for now in my place its so dry and hot and I'm running out of water that most of my trees are in very Bad condition and some will probably die...I cant do nothing against it

I didn't know about females and berries. I have a male taxus that identifies as female so we are patiently waiting for the red berries :)
I think it is beyond how the plant self-identifies. It is about the genes, and whether or not those trigger production of female flowers!
