Alex Cameron on Miami Memory, writing with The Killers and being a stepdad

  • In the past few years, Alex Cameron has turned heads with his infectious synth rock. The Australian songwriter and entertainer started his career off with the minimalist Jumping The Shark, but expanded his sound on his sophomore record Forced Witness, which featured full band arrangements. Just like fellow countrymen Donny Benét and Kirin J. Callinan, Cameron likes to portray absurd characters in his songs, using them to comment on toxic masculinity, sexism and homophobia. In doing so, Cameron often shifts between fiction and fact.
On his new album Miami Memory, however, Cameron shows himself in more personal ways. The record is a tribute to his life with actress Jemima Kirke, while Cameron also describes his experiences being a stepdad to her children. ‘I was just so used to the cliché being once you are raising children, the sex life disappears’, he told us before playing Paradiso Amsterdam. ‘I wanted to confront that with the music. And tell a positive story about a family that’s contemporary. It’s a new type of family and they’re becoming more and more common. I thought it deserved an anthem.’

I wander if Alex gets any negative feedback from some of his material. He tends to dwell in those grey areas, he's not afraid to express and embellish that shovenistic/often confrontational side on the male psyche through these characters in his songs. I really relate to that quality about him.

Jeff Graham I believe it’s those grey areas and confronting lyrics that separates him from other songwriters. It’s rare you find an artist write lyrics so raw and it’s what makes him amazing.

He is also really eloquent in explaining himself too. There’s an interview he did with Michelle Zauner from Japanese Breakfast where he talked about the danger of attracting the wrong kind of fans too

I don’t think anyone is aware that he’s playing a character.

Ummm, regarding confronting the issue of no sex after kids...it's odd to confront this as a step parent, without the intensity of childbirth and newborns which is SO HARD, and most importantly you have a break, I'm assuming as a stepdad your stepkids visit their a bio dad at some point during the week. Parents who have no breaks.... it's a little bit of a different story, way more intense when you get very little time to yourself.

Alex seems to be annoyed by the interviewers first question. His voice, facial expressions and the movement he does with his hand are like he wants to say "What a stupid question is that? Get away you unworthy!" :)
