      I try my best to be clear. I'm not perfect, I make mistakes, sometimes I do it wrong or different but it gets done and people learn something and get out and get dirty. If you have kids, let them learn with you. Thanks for watching!

    This is the best I’ve seen so far removing pitmans. Though torque specs are missing, I’ll just do them. gentleman tight. I will be working on my Ford Ranger. It should be the same.

      Thanks. And each vehicle is so different i can't list most torque specs. But in this case I don't use any. I've done so many i got by look and feel.
      Good luck. Hope all goes well

    That’s a compliant pitman arm there! Mine needed a 5 ton 3 arm puller, plus torch heat, to come off, outside the truck! I was replacing the steering gear to, I needed to take it off to get the core fee back, or I would’ve just tossed both. It didn’t budge with the normal puller, hammering, etc.
    This is a good video and if the arm comes off, good for you, but there are lots of us who have had a much tougher time than this.

      trying to get mine with a 5 ton 2 arm puller right now. It't not going well yet but I'm hoping if I leave the puller on there tight along with some pen oil maybe it will hammer loose tomorrow

    • @BigFrogs4x4
      @BigFrogs4x4  Před 3 lety +1

      Sometimes it can help to give the puller a good smack with a hammer on the side to jar it. Or you can use a grinder or cut off wheel to grind down the pitman arm. Just don't hit the spines. And if you use a hammer don't go crazy on it or you could damage the steering box. I usually cut it off.

    • @arnoldromppai5395
      @arnoldromppai5395 Před 3 lety

      when the steering box goes back so do the pitman arm, never bother to take it off, it going for total re-build, they only use the casting, none of the shafts or guts

    • @arnoldromppai5395
      @arnoldromppai5395 Před 3 lety +2

      i never use a puller to get the pitman arm off, i cut the arm with my small air grinder 3/4 in and put the air chisel to it, falls f, and even with 4x4 never undo the steering box unless it needs replaced to

    • @BigFrogs4x4

    Mine has 2 pitman arms? Front end wobbleswhen it hits any minor rough patch in the road, steering is stiff. I jacked up the front end and it has side play on the wheels, probably about an inch. I was thinking both pitman arms and the tie rods? It has all new stabilizer bushings so I'm a bit confused. I'm not a mechanic but I redid the front end of a Volvo and a Toyota Highlander watching CZcams. Of course I have the 4wd suburban and it's not that simple. I'm taking a stab in the dark with my diagnosis, does that sound correct? Thanks for the vid by the way, very informative but I was hoping you did both pitman arms, I'm assuming it's the same procedure.

    • @BigFrogs4x4
      @BigFrogs4x4  Před rokem +1

      You have a pitman arm, an idler arm, idler, inner and outer tie rods. Most likely. The pitman are is attached to the steering gear box and ithe idler arm is bolted to the idler on the passenger side of the frame with 2 bolts.

  • @akclan33
    @akclan33 Před rokem

    Can you use a torque wrench on the pitman arm nut while the box is still in the truck.? I tried torqueing it off the truck but can get the the box to stay steady even in a vise it moves.

    • @BigFrogs4x4
      @BigFrogs4x4  Před rokem +1

      Technically it is to be torqued on. But honestly I never have because of the extra time it takes. I can say I have never had one come loose.

    Good Job! did you remove the steering shaft bolt from the steering box?

    • @BigFrogs4x4
      @BigFrogs4x4  Před 2 lety +4

      No. You do need to be careful not to separate the shaft but it does have enough slide to do this. Also bungie cord the steering wheel to the seat to keep the steering wheel from turning.

      I just did mine today 2002 1500 4x4, the HF one worked fine for me. I had to kind of beat it onto the smaller bolt to get it around the boot but I don't think that is the tools fault. Don't know why it wouldn't work for you.

      Just from my experience (and im not a mechanic) most 1500 series '99-06 are 4 spline, some 2500 3500 are 3. Again there could be exceptions im not a mechanic They remove and replace the same. Get both and take back one

    • @tarnokm

    We can’t get the pitman arm to pull off on our 2000 Silverado.

    • @BigFrogs4x4
      @BigFrogs4x4  Před 2 lety

      If a pitman arm puller isn't working, you can use a 3" cut off wheel and careful cut the pitman arm at the spline. Do not cut the spline section. Once cut most of the way through it should split and relieve tension. You may have to hit it with a hammer and chisel in the cut to split it. But don't hit too hard or too much or you can damage the gear box.

      For future ref.
      A 1500 is 4 slot.
      A 2500 is probably a 3 slot.
      Anything HD is definitely a 3 slot.
