Many of his attacks, movements, and even how he stands still are much more stiff and expressionless, which is reflective of his earlier days. He is also portrayed as being shorter and with body proportions that emphasize his youth in the super-deformed art style as opposed to the more realistic proportions seen in MM8. So basically, MvC was using the most modern depiction of Mega Man for its time, whereas Smash Bros. was using a throwback to the NES era of Mega Man games.
