  • I join with the fellas from the Roll For Topic Podcast to plan a Scifi Horror One Shot while I create an ASCII map for the adventure. I print out the map on a transparency sheet so it looks retro futuristic!

Love it! Getting some serious FNAF vibes. Also, how do you print on the plastic sheets? Was it a service or do you have a special printer?

I used to program a lot of dungeon crawl type games when I was younger in QBasic. I loved trying to use the limited typeset to give the impression of various walls, creatures, and items scattered through the map. For example, I would animate between Ç and ç to create a chomping sea-serpent. And almost always, your character and friendly NPCs were just simle smiley faces.

There is an amazing book by Anna Anthropy on ZZT! That was a bit before my time, but it sounds like it was a cool scene for a while!

You get +5 nerd points for the video title, that's what got me here. Then, you get an additional +10 nerd points for the choice of font used in Open Office - I'm impressed!

I just found your channel and immediately subscribed...as for ASCII maps I have only one phrase to say. "STRIKE THE EARTH!"

Man, with those transparencies it just made me want to run a game on an overhead projector. Would have an interesting retro aesthetic to it...

Oh man, the odes I could write about the noble art of the DCC funnel. I burned so many statsheets running Mangrels Ate My Servants that it started and stopped being funny long ago.

Wow. I never realized you could create an ASCII map with just a keyboard. Gotta try it sometime.!

I was born after the heydays of ASCII art, and never got good at it. But one tip I do have is: use a font where the characters all have the same width, that way they'll line up in a grid. Fonts used in coding software are a good first choice.

Great tips thanks! :D The map gives me good "Duskers" vibes!
My dad uses a virtual computer for the game we play together so this style is perfect!
Also one of the best youtube avatars I've seen! 🥰 and great QR Easter egg!

The discussion reminded me of this space janitors game I hosted a couple of years back. Imagine a tabletop RPG version of Viscera Cleanup Detail. :D

I've always loved using ASCII, because my intro to d&d was through a bunch of MUD players, whose skill was in that format.
It is definitely a different feel.

This is awesome, but that is not what ASCII is. ASCII is just a standard that just links character representations with binary values in a mostly sensible way. Most of the special characters you use are from the ANSI text standard, and various proprietary Extended-ASCII characters(Which use the leftover space that a typical 8-bit variable has to encode extra symbols that aren't in the ASCII standard for specialty programs and OS terminals styling.) Nowadays most of these special characters are just included in Unicode within the UTF-8 Standard. So I guess a modern name for this kind of art could be UTF-8 Art.
