  • As businesses warn Keir Starmer that empowering unions will stifle growth, Pimlico Plumber's Charlie Mullins tells Ben Kentish that unions will 'ruin the country', adding that Labour 'are all for giving money away' and 'do not care about working people'.
The new Prime Minister has been tipped as the most 'union-friendly' PM since the seventies by former Blair advisor John McTernan, as his Party continue to surrender to demands.

these corps also benefit from the mass immigration, will create many low price labor. can work in any conditions.

@@chatham43you need to do some research before blindly defending the likes of Mullins. He gained his status before he was bought out by ripping off his employees and gaming the tax and national insurance systems.
In a unanimous decision by the supreme Court he was found liable for unpaid holiday and sick pay. He played the game of employing his workers on a self employed basis but expected them to work set full time hours exclusively for him. The supreme court ruled that no matter what basis he employed his workers they were still his workers and entitled to all rights and laws given to employees.
That means that over the time pimlico plumbers existed Mullins avoided paying probably millions in holiday and sick pay, it also means that he also avoided paying probably millions more in employers NI and tax by making them work as self employed.
So no you're right we can't all be millionaires, but that's because most of us don't break laws to run our businesses

Unions are the reason for the 5 day week with a weekend at the end. Unions are the reason women have the right to work and same pay rights etc. Unions are the reason maternity and paternity leave exists. Also the reason for minimum wage. Lots of workers rights were won by unions, and then these spread to non unionised sectors. People need to be careful what they wish for. Usually the greedy people at the top that wish to exploit workers are the ones telling you that unions are to blame for everything. They just want more money for themselves and to tear up workers rights.

Scandinavian countries and Germany economies all seem to do extremely well with much higher union membership levels and less anti union legislation compared to the UK and those counties seem to have happier workforces a much better standard of living and their economies seem to be doing pretty well too.
To have a tax avoiding millionaire business owner come on a start spouting his utter ignorance on Unions destroying our economy which has actually been destroyed over the last decade and a half during austerity, ongoing privatisation, increasing anti trade union legislation and Brexit, seems a little bit ridiculous to be honest. Also the fact that he is a large Tory donor means it is unlikely he can be impartial when talking about The Labour Party and the Unions.
Workers can enjoy most of the benefits they get at work because of hard fought for rights trade unions have fought for throughout the years. Rights like paid time off, maternity & paternity leave, the right to be safe at work. The right not to be discriminated against etc etc etc etc.

How about legalising conditions of service, maternity and paternity pay, holiday pay, procedures for unfair dismissal, contracted hours, pensions, legal help for its members that would be unaffordable to ordinary citizens, brought in a legal framework for conditions under which you are able to work, regulatory hours in which you have to work, legal entitlement for breaks, a health and safety framework so that you are not forced to do anything that may cause you or others injury or harm.
Yes, what have those pesky Unions ever done for the average working individual?
