  • Review of the Pentax LX.
    Since the publication of my book "Photography: The F Manual", I received many questions about the best film and digital equipment to use, so I decided to start with review of the camera, lenses and accessories I use.

    I have taken thousands of photographs with my LX; still in perfect condition. Takumars are great lenses too. Buon proseguimento!

    It is my dream camera. Almost impossible to get here in Poland in good shape, but I hope. With it's advanced lightmeter it should be a dream to use for slides without hauling external lightmeter. Or maybe Pentax will release new SLR that is LX-like ;)

      Yes, it's a fantastic camera. I have a couple of them, one is starting to have problems with the electronics. I plan to try fixing it soon... and make a video about it.

    Never seen, held, or used a Pentax LX but there is a solid contingent of people who are highly passionate about them, and who contend that they are/were THE best 35mm film body ever made.
    I think the exact same way about the Nikon F3.

    I love how you explained everything. I have always used Minolta XG series of cameras for my film photos along with Olympus. I was given a Pentax XL-60. I thoroughly love how this camera performs. I am taking my first couple of rolls in for developing this week to see how they turn out. Thanks for all the information. My next round of pics with this camera will be better now with the new information you provided.

    Hi Luigi - this is a great video. Grazie! I will definitely start looking for a LX now. I'm now using a Pentax P50 with a range of Pentax-A lenses (20, 24,35,50,100) ... very simple and capable camera. The only annoyance is not being able to set the ISO (only reads DX codes).

    Luigi, thank you for your detailed video! My LX I mostly use with the FA-2 viewfinder (without hotshoe). This copy doesn't fit in perfectly but shows little tolerances. My mechanic is not able to fix. Have you ever heard of problems of this kind?

    • @LuigiBarbano
      @LuigiBarbano  Před 4 lety

      Thank you, and no, never had that problem on my LXs. I had it on some medium format but it was just a dried seal and changing it worked.

    Hello Luigi, just got my hands on LX late body and was wondering how to use mirror lock up, as if I do mirror lock up how do I then frame and focus with mirror up? Im new to film photography..
    Thank you Very much for your answer Martin.

    • @LuigiBarbano
      @LuigiBarbano  Před 2 lety +1

      Hello Martin, the idea is to use a tripod when you use the mirror lock up. You frame normally, fix the tripod, pull up the mirror.
      It is useful for slow shutter speed and when you use a particularly long focal lens, so you avoid the vibrations introduced by the mirror. Much more essential for medium format with the big mirror flapping around.

    • @MartinRobinsonSlozie
      @MartinRobinsonSlozie Před 2 lety +1

      @@LuigiBarbano ah ok so I just frame and focus while on tripod and then pull the mirror up and take a shot? I just wanted to try it out the other day while in hand I cocked locked the mirror but was unable to take the shot for some reason..

    • @LuigiBarbano
      @LuigiBarbano  Před 2 lety +1

      @@MartinRobinsonSlozie yes, you put the mirror up and take the shot. Handheld works, but you will not see anything after the mirror is flipped up.

      It's a matter to use a coin to push a tab under the lug.

    How true are the rumours of this camera being very unreliable? I want to buy one, but the internet is telling me they all die really fast, and that they cant be fixed

    • @LuigiBarbano
      @LuigiBarbano  Před 8 měsíci +2

      I have 3 of them, very reliable. One had problems to the electronic when I bought it and was fixed for less than 100 euros.
      In my experience are very reliable cameras and, at last in. Italy, there is people repairing them in case something goes wrong.
      All cameras from that age with electronic can have problems (usually some condenser). If you want reliability go with pure mechanical cameras as the MX.

  • @Limaicco
    @Limaicco Před 8 měsíci +1

    Hi Luigi I read you fix the electronic of one lx; I think I have a mechanical issue in mine (jammed shutter) could you please recommend me a place where you repaired the camera in Italy?

    • @LuigiBarbano

      Yes. I always used

      10153 Torino (TO) - Via Reggio, 17
      tel:011 2472223
      They work well and have a lot of experience in older Pentax.
      You can also try the official one LTR Service (basically Fowa) but I don't think they repair old cameras.

    P.S. Ho una LX con il 50mm 1.7 e il 17 fish. Mi puo consigliare altre 1-2 ottiche? In particolare non sono uno che cerca la sharpness o bokeh bello a tutti i costi. Preferisco piuttosto una ottica leggera e piccola che stia in tasca senza far cadere i pantaloni.
    Cordiali saluti dall'Australia.

    How do you takeoff the strap lugs?

    • @LuigiBarbano

      copied and pasted from Pentaxforum: Using a thin implement, such as a USA ten-cent piece (dime) gently press the small tab at the bottom of the lug to open the jaws: pull it off the post.
