      I think it is in an exhibition match. Walner throws it up and motions to hit the ball (very fast), but instead catches the ball with his right hand. The opponent, thinking that the ball is served, turns and looks for the ball - then Waldner bounces the ball over the net.

      He might be the GOAT of illegal serves but he’s not even close to being the best of the sport. Literally any top 100 player nowadays would crush Waldner. Obviously ML is the one and only GOAT of tt, regarding skills and technique

      Yeagerist Any top 100 player would crush Waldner ? Are we talking Waldner the middle-aged man, or Waldner in his prime? He's up there, in the top ten of all-time, and you dismiss him, by saying 'any top 100 player would crush Waldner'. He's obviously not your favourite player, but the man was pure brilliance, with a unique game, and let's remember that he didn't serve illegally, he served as the rules allowed.

  • @martinjohnsons4523

    kinda wondering, if that's very powerful, why don't elites (or everyone for that matter) uses the heavy ghost backspin serve that bounces back like on 0:10 ? why doesn't it become meta? it looks...unbeatable (and while still legal, ofc)... right?
    is it because there's some problems (caveats, weaknesses, hard to pull / master), or is it just out of good will from us all players (like, if everyone's doing it, it would be...monotone) ?

    • @Sazyua
      @Sazyua Před 3 lety

      I have to admit, that heavy ghost backspin serve looks so difficult to receive.
      However, if you’re talking about the elites, there is no such thing as a unbeatable serve. No matter what kind of spin is on the ball, with the right training and right bat angle, you can get it majority of the time. The pros would probably fall for it or have trouble with it once or twice but after that, they should be able to recognize that it’s just backspin. A lot of players practice against backspin all the time, especially the Chinese players.
      Of course, if everyone keeps doing it, eventually it will be countered. Sometimes, the best skill is to just keep it to yourself and use it when you can :) Kinda like the YG serve (reverse pendulum). In the beginning, it was so unique and so much reverse spin but the pros can handle it pretty quickly. It’s still a great serve but so many players use it now that it practically only works on people who don’t know what side-spin is.

      Even club level can do backhand flip it, and if it goes back the opponent can reach and basically hit downwords and won t miss

    • @martinjohnsons4523
      @martinjohnsons4523 Před 3 lety +1

      @@bgmaster8557 the issue doesn't lie on the backhand flip, no prob with that
      what I was highlighting is the ball that touched your part of the table extremely close to the net and bounce pretty much instantly right after that - leaving you with such a small windows to react - not to mention some short ppl couldn't reach to that part, and will need to move to the side first - too late

    • @bgmaster8557
      @bgmaster8557 Před 3 lety

      @@martinjohnsons4523 It isn t about reach, if you step deep under the table you will have enough space, and keep in mind the top players start moving for the serve while the ball is bouncing on the table ot opponent side, and reading the spin on the name of the ball for the brand which is over it, they will know while it is bouncing on the other side it is very short backspin serve and will prepare to flip it or return it. If you suqat a little more and step deeper under the table you have more reach, even mima ito doesn t have problem with very short balls
