- 4K projectors have become really popular over the past 2 years and there's a lot of confusion about the differences between them. One of the most common debates is related to the difference between native 4k and pixel shifting 4k projectors. In this video I explain the difference.

Another great video Majestechs! Thank you for continuing to put out great content for us home theatre owners and hobbiests!
Love love love your Channel! You make us all feel smarter. I was hoping you would do a more in depth analysis, I'm glad you mentioned the chip size differences in picture quality. No mention of the light border though! I'm looking to upgrade from a 1080p and don't know what the ambient light difference is between uhd50 and uhd60. Keep up the awesome content man!
I loved the description. Simple and straightforward.
That was an excellent video. I really appreciate your work.
Love your channel man... Blessings... 100 k subs soon
You nailed it brilliantly. Well explained. You had me laughing 😃 at the end in your summary. Many thanks great video .
great video, you do a good job and I'm sure your already know this but I'll say it anyway but your video's are well done, high quality and very professional. I finally got my new 4k projector after watching this video ......6 times :)
which projector you got ? i am shopping for one., cant decide. thank you.
Love your channel, I'll stayed tuned for it. Plus, do you need a phone holder?
It was really helpful.
Thanks very much for sharing.
Good video! Helpful info! Thank you sir!
Good stuff... but people need to know more!
Regardless of how it's stated, no pixel-shifted projector can possibly give you a pixel-for-pixel representation of a true 4k video source. The shifted 1920x1080 DMD/DLP pixels are overlapped (2Vx2H shifting), and are physically 4x the size of the 4k pixel they are trying to emulate... you simply can not "light up" 1/4th of each native resolution pixel... the whole pixel is either ON, or OFF.
They can shift it as many "ways" as they want, but unless the imaging device (DMD/DLP/LCD/LCOS) has 1920x1080 pixels spaced with a 1 pixel gap in both V and H axis that it's being shifted (so that there's NO OVERLAP), you simply can not get true 4k projected isolated pixels... it's a simple matter of physics.
Just try to project a single pixel row/column B/W/B/W grid, and you will see a blur of nothing but faded overlapping B&W pixels TRYING to emulate a true 4K image.
Does it matter? Well... yes and no. Pixel-shifted images are incrementally better than 1080p, but Native 1080p will actually have FAR better "small area" contrast than pixel-shifted projected images. Again, this is because when you shift (with overlap) those large pixels, you can't get adjacent PROJECTED PIXELS FULL ON/OFF... the best you can get is 8:1 contrast ratio, whereas a projector operating in Native Resolution mode will give you its full native adjacent pixel contrast ratio of 1,000:1 or more.
One more in-depth way of explaining it...1) In a 2x2 DLP shifted scenario, let's say you want a single "4k-pixel" 100% ON (Full White), surrounded by nothing but BLACK.
2) Your DLP will use a single "1920x1080 pixel" turned ON at 25% brightness (remember, you're starting with pixels that are 4x the size of the desired 4K pixels).
3) This 25% brightness single pixel shifts clockwise 1/2 of its size (1/2 of the 1920x1080 pixel size) in each direction: RIGHT, DOWN, LEFT, UP.
4) This means there is an area in the exact middle of the shifted are that's 1/4th the size of that "1920x1080 pixel" that is getting light 100% of the time.
5) Since it takes 4 shifts to create an image (your eyes do the smoothing.averaging), you can SUM the light of those 4 shift-times to come up with a 100% brightness middle 4k-pixel.
6) BUT... every adjacent "4k pixel" area is getting that same 25% ON "1920x1080 pixel" for 2/4ths of the time due to 1/2-pixel overlap of each "shift" (draw it out, it helps!)
SO... you get a single 100% brightness central 4k pixel - surrounded by eight (8) 4k-size pixels that are receiving that 25% brightness for 2/4ths (1/2) of the time. The "ON" pixel is 100% brightness, but the OFF pixels surrounding it are 12.5% brightness.... 8:1 contrast ratio at the pixel-to-pixel level... best case... and this happens to every "fine detail" edge in the entire image. If you have a "star field" against the blackness of space, anything smaller than a 2x2 pixel star gets blurred.
GRANTED... it takes a LARGE projected image to see all of this loss of detail, but it's there at all sizes.
We're being sold Fake 4K projectors as if they are TRUE 4K projectors.... because CEA says it's OK.
Thanks Chris, You videos are great source of information on projectors
You are really good at this. keep it up.
Appreciate the video! Was stuck between the 50 and 60.
Good stuff. Thanks for the explanation.
Hi do you have any thoughts on the new optoma uhl55 and will you be getting a review model thanks great channel btw
Preach on man. Learning anything about 4k and or projectors is always helpful to any consumer.
Lot of reviewers out there. Yours are very good indeed. Very professional and relevant. Thanks.
Great clear and simple comparison of how the different pixel shifting works.
You getting the Optoma UHD 51ALV for review? Definitely interested in how that model holds up.
Great video and topic thanks!
Awesome content as usual. Could you possibly do a video on the new JVC LX-UH1 dlp projector? Looks interesting.
Thanks for the video. I am curious as to how the pixel shifting is accomplished. Do they actually move the beam or the dlp chip in between on alternate fields? Any clues would be appreciated. Sounds like interlace of yesteryear.
Well explained. Thank you.
I think you did a great job. Thanks!
When are you gonna test out the new xgimi h2? Really looking forward for that review! :)
Thanks for this video!
How exactly does pixel shifting work? Is that some kind of "overlapping" of multiple pixels?
@Majestechs, do you think it's worth going for UHD60 over the UHD50? Is the difference in sharpness/color accuracy worth the extra dollar?
Quick question! I previously bought a Benq HT2150st off Amazon and had to return it... now that Black Friday and Cyber Monday are coming up I'm considering buying it again. Is there another projector I shoulder consider? It depends how crazy the sales are. Maybe 4K will be an option. I liked what I had and used it for for gaming and movies in a living room setting.
Thanks so much. Great channel btw!
Your the MKBHD of Technology and home cinema.. Absolutely take your word and advice on everything.. Easy to understand and extremely educational.. 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you! Cleared it up for me. I'll just save money and get a 1080p projector since I cant afford the Sony, or the cables or a proper screen. I'm looking at the BenQ HT1050A or Optoma HD27HDR. What do you think? are these still good contenders or can I save even more money and get the Vankyo V600 or V630? please help! this would be my first projector and Im putting it in a 10x10 room and its very dark like crazy dark. love your videos. been subscribed for just a couple days.
What do you recommend for a dedicated theater room, 90% movies 10% gaming? I’ve been looking at epson 3200/3800/4010/5040 and optoma UHD series, but also open to other brands. Projector would be ceiling mounted approx 14 feet from a 110” screen.
Could you do a vid on Home Theater speakers vs PA System speakers? Pros, cons, such power differences and etc
Great expectation.
Thx.
I am more confused. But what do you think of Epson 4k enhancement they charge so much but are they worth it compared to dealing with low black level and rainbow artifact with the dlp single chip
Great video
So with 4K pixel shifting if it’s basically up scaling a 1080p signal to 4K is there any real benefit of using a 4K UHD signal over a 1080p signal since the projector is going down scale to 1080p prior to splitting the pixels? Hope that question makes sense.
That was very interesting.
Hi, Chris. I have a source that's 3840 × 2160. It's a laptop that will be used for a work presentation that requires high detail (a split screen with Excel, PowerPoint, Edge browser). Hence, I'm shopping for a 4K projector. Does it sound like pixel-shift can do the trick for my 4K source, or will my source be downscaled to 1080p before it's pixel-shifted to 4k?
Hey chris, thank you for the video. Would a 1080p projector still look good on a 100" screen or do I need a 4k one?
Wauh very great men! Though am littlebit confuse, i wanted to start a simple small football cinema hall theatre and i bought my first projector Aun A30c pro) but had an esues of giving HD Quality image in defining between grass and fans but works perfectly in movies. I believe you have experience on projectors and you can help on which projector to buy next time. Am planning to go back shoping for projector and on my budget there's around $170 for 4k projector.
Great video! Which mic do you use for speaking part?
Thanks. Sennheiser ME66
Hi i wanted to know if you can tell me which of the Optoma UHD50 or the optima UHD60 is better, which one has a sharper image thank you for your time.
where i can find projector chipset resolution . if any website please share. no one projector website show chipset resolution.
hey dude. thanks for your information. You think it is fair enough to pay for a 4k proyector agains a 1080? i plan to have a 200" or more screen. thanks!
I am planning on buying a projector and I am still debating which one to buy. Great video
Great video, but how can you tell if a projector use a higher pixel , pixel shifting resolution?
Do the Benq tk 8801 use the higher pixel count?
Recently i bought optoma UHD51 and its amazing picture quality.
quality video mate , LG HU80KA 4K vs Optoma UHD60 which is a better value?
It all going to depend on setup
Great video! So for a 1080p projector with 4k pixel shifting capabilities it will show a better image in 4k comparing to Full HD? There are people that think this is silly because the chip is natively limited to 1080p whereas eventhough it's not native 4k the enhancement is noticeable?
Does native resolution depend on LCD pixel number or monitor/projector hardware or software? Is it possible to use same monitor/projector board and put higher resolution LCD that has resolution as "supported"?
Hey have you compared the optoma hd27hdr to the optoma uhd50, how does the 4k ready compare
Have you seen the new JVC DLA NX5? If so what are your thoughts on it?
Got recommendation on 4k projector for 150” screen??
About 14 feet distance
Chris, can I change a Optoma uhd50 projector into a smart device (for internet use)?
great video
Can you tell me if the jmgo s3 is any good? Thinking of buying it much appreciated 👍
MAJEST, what about the 1080p sony's compared to a pixel schifting 4k beamer?
The sony will win in terms of black levels and native chontrast by far. For regular 1080p blurays the image of the sony will be much better.
Hello Majestechs. I want to buy the UHD 65 or the UHZ65. Is the UHZ65 worth the extra money? I mean how much better is the picture?
Yes the uhz65 is way better and worth it. Laser 4k is the only way to go.
If I have a pixel shifting 4k projector that's native 1080p should I use a 4k file or 1080p file?
Thank you!!
I bought one of the Darbee adapters that sharpens 1080p extremely a lot. My question to you is, have you tried to put this Darbee adapter on your 4k to see if it makes your picture even better?
I would like to know as if it does, I might go and get the 4k vs 1080p when I build my home theater.
Yes it will , but as if now current Darbee will only pass 1080p signal.
I have a JVC DLA X570R ... they don't market it as a certified 4k but has the 3840x2160 is that considered certified ? I upgrade projectors every 3 years and it's expensive keeping up with the tech
What's the best startup 4k home theater system Budget wise
I am a college student looking for a cheap projector to watch movies and do project presentations. Can you recommend a good cheap projector? somewhere between 100 - 300 dollars (could be a little more but not 400 dollars). I want a good clear/sharp picture with good color and a somewhat big screen (50 - 70 inches or bigger).
I know I want the UHD50 or 60 I don’t know as if I can justify the extra $ going with the 60. Is it really worth ? I currently don’t have anything 4K in my house and want to upgrade, thoughts suggestions?
My room is 13 feet deep, can I get a 120”x51” screen from that distance?
Yeah I understand. I have viewsonic 4k pix shifting I'm okay with it not used it much since buying it last week as I use the 4k flat screen mostly.
Another good question would be Why are early faux-K $1K+ pj's missing low cost features like lens shift. Is it 2004 again or what?
Hey Chris what about 3D home projectors? Do u like them? Are there any out there that gives theater quality that won’t break the bank?
Optoma and Epson have a lot of great 1080p 3D projector that entry level. A good 3D movie is better then 4k any day.
I checked out an Optoma but it felt like looking at 3D through a viewmaster (70s kids toy), so it wasn’t like the movie was coming at me.
@@luisprgreeneyes it all depends on the movie, some have of screen effects, some are more depth cues.
First, i love your reviews. I own a BenQ 1085ST which is an amazing 1080P short throw projector. Great color accuracy, great skin tones, amazing black levels (especially when playing full source BlueRay discs) and great contrast. It truly is an amazing projector at any price point. I saw your best projector review at different price range, but to be honest it wasn’t as clear cut as I would have liked. Plus you did not include the new Epson 4K enhanced projectors in that battle. (I understand it might not have been available at the time of the review). I would like to upgrade to something better than my current projector but only if it can exceed my current one in every aspect. I don’t care about bells and whistles, and i certainly don’t care about the things the naked eye cant see. I just want a projector that is going to blow my socks off visually when compared to what i have. Are we there yet, or have the current crop of projectors not matured enough yet to blow away fully matured 1080p projectors? Please keep on keeping it real.
Hey I'm looking to buy a 4K projector and I need help to decide on should I get the Epson or Ben Q. or Optima
which one did you go with?
Hi Chris, not sure if you'll see this or reply, but i would love to see you do a review of the Vivitek 2288, as I'm hearing great things about them, and i only trust your reviews...Cheers brother!👍
I have the optoma uhd 65 and got it for about $2400 canadian and i think its absolutely amazing and so does my wife. We watch content on a 135 inch elunevision nanoedge screen and 1080 content looks great and 4k content looks noticeable sharper and richer in detail. Its not perfect but for the price my expectations were blown away. Maybe in a couple years when native 4k projectors come down further in price and theres more content to watch ill upgrade but for the price the optoma uhd 60-65 is an amazing bang for the buck.
Hey what about Optoma HD27HDR is it worth it ? or just go with HD27!!
this video should have been much longer, at last 10 minutes, because it offers some very interesting informations
hey, if i buy the UHD60 from amazon, are you able to return the product if you dont like it? I'm assuming you've bought many projectors from Amazon. Trying to avoid those restocking fees from Bestbuy
So does a Pixel Shift projector Require 4k content or does it basically Pixelshift 1080p Videos too?
They typically upscale 1080p to 4k then use pixelshift to output a 4k image...this ends up being better (generally) than keeping the output at 1080p
What an awesome video.
i spent last month looking for a 4k proyector and finally i got mine last week, but this video would be great when start my quest, i decided to buy the optoma uhd51avl , my first choise was the uhd 60 for the only 2x pixel shifting instead of the uhd 51, but i have tones of 3d movies... if i got the 60 is not 3d compatible, so i choose the 51 but!! when i was bout to purchase i found the uhd51avl same as 51 but with 600 lum more, 2400 vs 3000 lum. thats all , i wish you post this video earlier., great explanation !! now i have an issue with my hdmi cable, i need 40,21 feet or 15 m and be hdr compatible for real.
Thanks for the video. So many variables. Let's compare the epson 5040ub to the Sony 285. The advantage the epson has in price and that it has
lens memory. What if you are playing a 4k blu ray disc? Would the Sony 285 produce a better image?
Always go for Sony when it comes to projectors,of course if you have enough money.
It's already been said in other comments but it needs to be said again. Great video! Professional, concise, informative.
From New Zealand, please keep it up :)
Has anyone tried out the Nierbo Ultra Short Throw Projector?
thanks, very helpful even in 2022! shall go for a cheaper pixel shift model.
So the pixel shifting 4K projectors will it upscale my 1080p blu rays or will I need to buy 4K blu rays?
@Roscoe ,you will need 4k movies or 4k streaming content, Blu-ray movies still play at their 1080p resolution but still looks really nice.
Is the nebula cosmos max a certified 4k?
Nice job.
Hey I just bought the Optoma uhd50 can I connect a sound bar to it and how
Hook sound bar to source for audio
I love people who explain things to me
I've been looking for native 4k projectors but everything I'm finding is that most downscale 4k to 1080p. That's not what I want though. I have a collection of 4k movies I want to watch through my Nvidia shield tv (yes, it can output 4k).
Can you review the Polaroid u 100 pls
There is a lot of confusion out there. A 4K projector can play up to 4K video. That doesn't mean it will enhance or convert a low quality source video e.g. SD to HD or 4K. Picture quality depends on the source video. You mentioned a pixel shifting projector, first time hearing this, which I think is what I am looking for. I want a projector that can shift pixels (convert) the source to higher definition.
So should I not get the uhd50 as I was about to do? Since it’s native is not 4k
It is 4k. The uhd50 is a great 4k projector.
Which is better the uhd60 or the Sony?
I also depends on how many phases of shift the projector uses. 2-phase 1080p will only give you half of 4K. 4-phase 1080p or 2-phase 2716x1528 will give you full 4K, tho it still won't look quite as good as native, but it will be super close.
what about that 8k JVC projector?
Perfect.
Plzz review over XGimi H2
I have a benq 1080p right now. hope to get a native 4K projector by early 2021 coinciding with getting my kids the ps5 earlier on. hope prices drop enough. I really don’t want to get the pixel shifting or simulated 4K
Would u recommend using a 4K projector on a wall
If it's smooth and painted right yes.
