  • For the third edition of Real Scenes, RA goes to one of the most special places for electronic music in the world: Berlin. When the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, techno became the underground soundtrack to the reunion between East and West. In recent years, it's become an international destination for ravers-a cheap place to party with clubs that are renowned throughout the world.
Techno has become a business in the meantime. Yet Berlin still maintains a credibility that other cities lack. To understand why, RA went to the German capital eager to find out about its unique history and the reasons behind its continued relevance.

The thing is, Berin used to be different like 12-16 years ago and because of how it was back then, more and more people came to Berlin (if I would live some where different I wolud also want to live in Berlin). But because everyone came here and wanted to live in the cool city, Berlin changed a lot. All the cool districs are supper expensive and the people living there for 40 years had to move, because of gentrification and now there are living rich hipsters that think they enbody the Berlin spririt. Its not a bad thing people are visiting the city. It is nice to talk with them and they bring money but their behavior is often anoying, they feel like because they are in a cool and hip city they can do everything they want.

A couple of weeks ago we went clubbing in amsterdam and we hopped into Escape just for a laugh. OMG, what a tourist trap! The music was horrible, it had champagne VIP sections and it was full of tourists who didn't have a clue about a more gritty club scene and alternative club music. It made me appreciate my regular clubs more. I usually like the lesser known, smaller clubs because they have a more cosy feel and cater towards a niche audience.

"This you only find in Berlin."
Not true and yes I've lived in Berlin and am friends with DJs and record label owners.
Politically it's unique but that type of club culture escapism can also be experienced elsewhere.
In London during the mid 80s there were huge parties being held in derelict abandoned factories. However the scene did not last that long because of the property boom. All in a sudden it became fashionable to live in a converted warehouses , so these illegal house parties no longer had a home until promotors started renting fields off farmers during the late 80s and then the rave culture started. I've been to illegal parties in Berlin and next month they return to the same venue. In London the police were much stricter enforcing the law. You could never return to the same venue and you kept your fingers crossed that you would not be closed down.
Also due to Berlin's unique history a lot of these old buildings are protected. So it makes sense to rent or sell for club use.

I would like to know what the berliners have against tourists in eletronic parties? I am from Brasil and a few days ago I was in Berlin. I try to party in two clubs but none of them let me in. I had already readed about the door policy before trying to enter in the clubs and I couldnt understand whats the meaning of it...

Totally. There is a lot of soft racism in Germany. Go to London and you won't experience this. It will fucking cost you though.

Yeah i know, sucks. I went to Berlin in 2014, got without any problem into Watergate and Berghain. Went to Berlin again 2 weeks ago, Friday they were not letting me in Kater Blau, despite I was telling the bouncer every single dj playing that night, luckily I was on guestlist (which I wasn't sure) so got in (and yeah the place was amazing), but the door policy was fuckin annoying.
Then tried Berghain 3 times and got rejected, really wanted to catch Tony Humphries (1 girl and guy behind me in the queue didn't have a clue who Tony is and got in without any problem as they were regulars).
Went to Tresor which was really good tho, but Berghain is Berghain, and sucks travelling all the way to Berlin and getting rejected at door, as Berlin for me is a pretty shitty city and its only worth for its amazing clubbing scene.

They are trying to keep out people who don’t fit in to the club and would ruin the vibe / experience for other people, I think this is very hard to understand for people who are not used to this kinda door policy

I have to say, I feel documentaries like this really don't reflect or represent the real diversity of what goes on in Berlin. They always focus musically on stereotypical "Minimal House" which I must say kind of annoys me somewhat. Where's Alec Empire? Where's Basic Channel? Where's the groundbreaking techno which Tresor released in the mid 90s? where is the punk scene in all this, what about the Breakcore? what about the anonymous small bars selling Sternberger for 90 cents?

I went to Berlin last January and I was refused entry by the door girl at Tresor after partying and djing underground music for 13 years so for sure I know what partying is and what this culture is all about. I even organise events lol Still active and doing so....
I guess your doorgirl is the stupid one Mr haha :) please note I was sober too. Quite dissapointed ... going inside Tresor was going to be the main attraction for me...anyways went to Watergate and I still enjoyed my night ! :)

The way they put it sounds harsh, but let me put it this way - do you think it's fair that someone that has traveled all this way to finally be amongst other people that love techno as much as they are, and experience it in this environment, faces rejection from the clubs because they're already full of people that are just tourists in the area wanting to get drunk at the local clubs?
