It's sad when the woman of your dreams doesn't acknowledge your existence. Del Shannon knew how to write songs & sing songs about that sort of thing. He wrote mostly about things that guys mostly wouldn't talk about. It's a cool song and yet Del Shannon had a large fan following.
Youre right, most male artists at this time didn't want to appear sensitive. The only other big artists I can think of that did this at the time were dion and maybe bobby vee
Del said in an interview that the lights were very hot. His part was filmed in the USA as were most of the American acts. The film story was directed by Richard Lester who later went on to direct The Beatles "Help" movie. Thanks for putting up the whole clip again.
great clip from ''It's Trad Dad'' with Helen Shapiro and Craig Douglas, I adore Del's version of ''I Wake Up Crying'' all the purist will cry Chuck Jackson's is the penultimate version but Del just makes the song his way, what an underrated overlooked songwriter producer and singer this man is, total respect for this gentle guy R.I.P Del, a lifetime of great songs, from Bruce Springsteen to Steve Marriott, the guy influenced a lotta singers and bands and he also had an album produced by Andrew Loog Oldham who loved Del's version of The Stones ''Under My Thumb'' what a giant amongst his peers.
You should here Shakin Stevens version, I love Dels voice but the production on Shaky’s version and the musicianship blows Dels version clean out of the water, it just doesn’t rock in the same way!

It's interesting that the minor changes in lyrics between the Drifters version and Del Shannon's version make the story very different.
