- John Illsley has been the bass player of the legendary Dire Straits. Now he has turned to play the guitar. On May 14, 2010 he played at the Stage Club in Hamburg to promote his new solo album "Street Of Heaven". He has been supported by former Dire Straits member Chris White who is a phantastic saxophone player and by Polly Wood on 2nd guitar.

Yes of course,there is only one Mark Knopfler,but that’s no reason why John can’t play these songs.He goes on the road with many formats of the the original band members because he loves it.John had a big influence in D.S’s early music,and is entitled to reproduce these songs.
Less of the negativity guys,as an expat in France,I play in a band covering all sorts of stuff over the last fifty odd years,including old D.S material and Marks more recent material.Mark is without my favourite musician of the last fifty years,and I saw him as recently as last summer In Verona
Music is for everyone guys,and if we can play a bit ourselves,so much the better.Keep safe.
John Illsley is Dire Straits DNA. It reminds me first versions of former DS band. Vibrant performance, one of the best I've ever heard not from MKnopfler.

No, noone can replace Mark, but in some odd way John having played for so long with Mark it's quite obvious John knows what the music is about or something, so although he may not copy Mark's style, there's an essence of Dire Straits in John's approach to his guitar parts.

You know what.... He sings very well but this time he did it way too emotional ... this song has a completely different message.... I prefer him as a bassist. Don't you think same?

That just doesn't work, he should be playing his own stuff, which is really nice. One thing on the + side: he doesn't try to play exactly MK's solos, like so many others do and fail.

Yeah, I don't know what to say about this. Ofcourse, it's John's song aswell, as he was a member of Dire Straits. But.. It just fells wrong somehow. Maybe I've been Knopflerized.. Chris White ftw, though.

It doesn't work for me on so many levels. For one you can't play Knopfler with a pick unless you're playing "the Man's too Strong". You can't sing Knopfler in a pretty way. You can't leave the tricky guitar parts to the sax player. The list is longer but I'll leave it there! Is John's pub in the New Forest not doing so well?

Yeah, a nice try but that is it. It's even missing some very important accents and notes for the reel feel. That's what happens with coverbands too... some embarrassment there. Putting a song like this on a solo album and trying to fill in Mark's role? You can be the best friends, but one should know better and stick what you do best: play bass. He's the master of the essential groove, which is a craft on itself... but not a solo guitarist.

i can,t find telegraph road between all the numbers illsley is playing here :-) must be 50 years of practise before he can play that,but a good try here.missing marks techniques but i think he didn,t learn this by only watching
