I’m 63 now and a Kansas native. To this day, one of the best concerts I’ve EVER been to remains EARTH, WIND AND FIRE! This was when showmanship meant something to performers. We paid for a show and they gave us something to remember. In my hometown, this was and still is two-stepping music. In a club, all you’d hear is feet shuffling and fingers popping. Oh yes SANG, gentlemen, SANG!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

I'm old enough to have gone to 5 of their concerts back in the 70's. My all time favorite concerts back in the Bay Area (Oakland Coliseum). The Emotions opened for one of those concerts. Man, I miss those days. Music was at its pinnacle back then.

Maurice was a drummer, so when he sings, his phrasing and other vocal nuances are sung like a percussion instrument. Plus, his tone is marvelous. This is what separates him from anyone else and makes his voice so unique. Oh, and he does have vocal range as well.

To see them live (which I was fortunate to do several times) was a master class in live music & performing. The comments on how today's music is lacking that "special" sound are 100% correct (imo) there's far too much reliance on technology to try & just create "hits" & not the soul stirring connection that music is meant to have. Music's a gift from God to help us celebrate, mourn, heal and so much more. Technology will never be able to recreate that, ever (again imo).

I feel you Girl. This song came out when I was in high school but I didn't appreciate its beauty until my 40s 🙄 I wasn't groovin' to EW&F in my teens. My parents and uncles and aunts were. I started groovin' to EW&F in college when they came out with the album Raise a few months after the debut of MTV.

I read a biography on EWF. when they formed at their very young ages the music they put out, audience's didn't show much interest. They hooked up with a skilled manager who worked tireless with ewf, they also worked very hard at totally changing the style of music. Ewf finaly started coming up with hits and they very quickly built up thousands of fan's and sold thousands of records. They soon after sold millions in records worldwide. Maurice White was a very talented and skilled musician who started that group and took them to the top
Feel a bit guilty about saying this because I know they were big in the 70's but I never was a huge EWF fan. I listened to their earlier albums just to see if the critics were wrong. Eh...not so much. Their first two albums were on Warner Bros. and released in 1971. I believe at the time Bill Cosby was the CEO and gave a young Maurice White a chance. The albums flopped and the group was dropped. Afterwards they signed with Columbia. And after the first two albums received lukewarm responses the rest became hits. Dad had the Open Our Eyes album which was their third one on the label and the first one that didn't have a lady in the lineup. It was the beginning of their 'classic' period. But with that being said I was still selective about tracks I liked by them. This one is ok I suppose, though I preferred After The Love Is Gone. And after several listenings I still can't get into the Open Our Eyes one...
Open Our Eyes is one of their more "spiritual" album I wouldn't be surprised that many people don't quite get
the album's concept.
Stevie Wonder's Fulfillingness' First Finale released the same year (1974) as EWF's Open Our Eyes and both are one of their deeper albums.
I enjoyed both album quite a lot.
I liked pretty much almost all of their stuff except Heirtage.
The first three albums are so raw I loved it,something that their more popular albums kinda lacked.
Oh and you have to listen to the whole thing some songs they made never meant to stand on its own.

I personally witnessed "EWF" at the Philadelphia International Airport in the spring of '82, when they were likely touring for their "Raise!" album. It was the mainstays, the White brothers, Philip Bailey, and Ralph Johnson ~ 4 wide,, with the craziest-cool looking sparkling outfits and hats on ! 😃 They seemed to be coming in thru the out door: slipping in thru the arrival area and on up to departing, 👻 as to not be detected, possibly ! The "buzz" in the area, with their entourage/posse was unmistakable ! ... *Deja'voodoo 2 years later: I saw the electrifying Miss Dolly Parton & company in the same exact spot !! 🤪 ..GOOD times ! .... # Brush With Greatness ! 🏆
