Repairing a Noisy TV power supply

  • I found this Flatscreen TV on the curb. It's a early generation (2006) 37" Flat screen Polaroid LCD TV. Aside from being dirty and making a horrible screetching noise it worked and had picture. Unlike newer generation TVs these older ones have separate power supply boards that can be easily repaired. The noise it was making is a classic sign of Switch mode power supply (SMPS) failure, typically due to failing capacitors. Not surprisingly the ones in this TV are Capxon, one of many notoriously shitty Capacitor Brands plaguing consumer electronics, and predictably several have failed. A few Nichicons from my parts bin and a $7 pair of filter capacitors later I have a fully functional Flat screen TV.
