    I remember back in my skating days in the early 2000's, someone gave me a great tip. I was trying to ollie over a smallish skateboard stack, and he noticed I was concentrating too much on getting the front foot over. As soon as he said to focus on pulling your back foot as high as possible, I was jumping over people. I made that last bit up, but the rest is true. Vast improvement.

    One thing to always remember when first learning to ollie: YOU have to bring the board off the ground. The board does not lift you off the ground.
    When I see people first learning to ollie they often appear to be thinking so much about foot placement and front foot movement that they seem to have forgotten you gotta jump. All the footwork ain't gonna mean diddly if you just smack your tail and slide your foot. It's an extremely unintuitive thing to do which is why it's so frustrating at times.

    • @nico-bf1kr
      @nico-bf1kr Před 4 lety +6

      Exactly my problem when i was young. By watching people making very high jump I thought the pop of the deck were propulsing the rider. Complete mistake! A Ollie is a body jump first of all. Then you play with the bord to elevate it so it will follow your movement.

      Hey Jonny, just a little advice: I couldn´t learn how to ollie for a long three weeks because I didn´t really understand the pop. Then sometime, I saw a video of Tony Hawk explaining it, saying that you actually try to pop the tail down so it kind of "jumps" over its edge. That´s the fantastic "pop" noise. Once I had that down and understood that the tail should pop over the edge, I got the ollie down in two hours the next day and was happy as ever. Just a little tip, whenever I see these ollie videos they don´t really emphasize that, but I personally think it´s the aspect of it that matters most.

      Hi Jonny, fellow Swiss here.
      You should try tu use some free audio edition software, like audacity for example.
      Just turn up the volume, maybe add compression, and try to get your volume to 0db.
      I personally like VirtualDj the best, it's visually so easy to understand.
      Otherwise, I really like your skateboarding, I hope you'll get more recognition soon. Not as a youtuber but as a professional athlete.

    Here is a tip for anybody trying to get the ollie down. Its not so much as how hard you pop as it is the timing. Its all in the snap of the pop on your backfoot. You wanna spring up with it and not focus on putting too much pressure on that backfoot. Also dont be afraid to put that frontfoot further back than Johnny did in the video. Everybody is different and has diff foot positioning for every trick. Whatever works for you works. Just experiment and most of all have fun!

  • @dfgyuhdd
    @dfgyuhdd Před 7 lety +560

    The secret to the ollie is timing. Nearly everyone learning ollies believes that they have to pop then level really fast. NOT TRUE. The correct timing will come to you after practice, practice, practice. The more you do, the better you get.

      True, Ollies are one of those tricks that you need to practice for a long time, there's people who get desperate with this trick (including me when i was younger) years later i got back on my board and started doing ollies every day, at first you will do them rocket and 1 inch off the ground lol, but you just gotta keep doing them A LOT, and you will eventually get them higher and better, its one of those tricks where you constantly progress at them even after months/years of skating (took me around 6 months to get a nice solid ollie) (i have not tried to bone them which means they're not perfect and i still need to progress at them see?) :)

    After 30 years I have been Olling wrong . I never knew you were supposed to tweak the back foot I always kept it flat. So basically your supposed to do a ninja kick. Well I’m 45 now and stating skating again and I will be practicing how to do this now. Thank u

    Quick tip: something That helped me was to bring up that back foot more to go over stuff. It lifts the back truck so it doesn’t get stuck.

    realy good Video mate !
    i just started a year ago and i think i just landed my first Olli a couple of days ago.
    but this video will help me massivly to get more into skateboarding
    i am a Longboard rider tho :D
    i would love to see more "how to do easy moves" videos like this
    how to manual, Nosemanual, usw.
    perfekt would be you on a longboard but hey.... i wouldn't mind if its even on a regular board, i think i can adopt a lot of things that will speed up my progress in boarding
    cheers for all the ggod entertainment so far and keep on skating ! :)
