I think it's a pretty neat concept... when you start on a trip you can make it small and carry it on the plane, and then once you've done a bunch of shopping and need more room, just expand it and then check it in!

Biaggi luggage expands that way, but it is soft sided. I usually take mine in its smallest form along with a rolling carry on to Europe, then check one bag on the way back.
