Would you like to see a how to make a version 2.0 to this?
I’m thinking about making one maybe half the size, made with varying materials rather than just willow.
Would that be something you’d like to see?

I was searching for basket weaving and came across this video, I love the organic form of this basket!

      Thank you so much!!
I’m still a complete beginner at basket weaving but I’ve fallen in love with this style, it’s really forgiving and allows you to create something with a beautifully natural form like you said!
In my new baskets I’m trying to use a similar weave but incorporate varying materials, for example regular wild willow with something like twisted willow or hazel.
What kind of basket weaving are you interested in?

@@agreatalternative I'm not sure yet, I started my youtube search with pine needle basket and before you know it you go down the rabbit hole of basket weaving 😁 But I really like this style of weaving and the use of different kind of materials. I have never woven something myself but now I am very interested in trying :) I love how it looks so organic and beautiful and is funtional as well.

      @@justj3259 Haha that’s exactly how I started!!!
I found what helped me was just going and testing natural materials while out on a walk, then coming back to search for CZcams videos on that particular fibre.
That’s how I learnt a lot about spruce root (pine would work the same I think), an amazing material to work with!
Good luck with your basket weaving journey!!
If you’re interested I share more images of ongoing weaving projects on our Instagram page 👍

I love this basket! The organic shape makes it a work of art! I've been making rather dodgy baskets for the last few years out of olive tree suckers I pruned in Greece but this is a whole other level! Nice to see it in use, perfect for the purpose.

Thank you, I was really pleased with how this shape just organically formed itself as I wove everything together, proved to me that however messy it starts off it’ll come together!
I’d love to see your baskets, especially as that’s not a fibre I’ve heard of using before!

Yeah you could easily make a whole bunch of stuff like this, it’s really easy too!
Remember to wait for November - March to harvest as I think it can damage the plant to harvest during the spring/ summer 👍
Then you can be like me and give everyone woven presents 🤣

This video is fantastic! Would you be able to elaborate on what youre doing to keep the willow from snapping? I see youre doing some sort of twising movement, but every time i try to replicate it, i snap my branches!

    • @agreatalternative
      @agreatalternative  Před měsícem +1

      @@rottenroadkill3311 Great question!
      In short in depends….😁
The methods I use to prevent cracking are
      - Like you said a twisting motion
      - Using a thumb to bend small sections
      - Pulling back and forth over a knee
      - Try to put as small a bend in the willow rod when weaving. Often this means your other hand is supporting while the main one is weaving. There are different techniques for this but it depends on what you are weaving.
Wild willow tends to be more prone to snapping though, plus it depends on whether it’s fresh/ dry or dry and then re-soaked.
Another method could be to re-soak it for longer?
Or use material that is a thinner than you currently are using if possible?
I’ve not tried it that much but you could also try to split the willow in half, which would make it thinner and more flexible.
(I show roughly how to do this in the spruce root harvesting video)
      Hope that helps!!

Yea bramble could work, or maybe pine tree roots (from a fallen tree)?
Otherwise I’ve been using the summertime to find all of the spots where I can harvest wild willow in the winter so i know where I can get a lot in one go!
      See you there 👍

This was a great first random weave basket for me as there is no set template and you can’t really make mistakes!
Отличное начало, надеюсь, вам понравится экспериментировать с новыми идеями!
Для меня это была отличная первая корзина для случайного плетения, поскольку здесь нет установленного шаблона, и вы не можете допускать ошибок!

We don't have poison ivy in Europe. This kind of ivy is called Hedera and only mildy poisonous when ingested in large quantities. Perfectly safe to touch.
