9/11 Stories: Former FDNY Tim Brown

  • Tim Brown is a 20 year, highly decorated FDNY’er. On September 11th, he came close to death not once, not twice, but several times. Just one different turn or staying a moment longer in a spot would surely have left him among the 343 New York City firefighters to die that day. More than a few were his close friends, whom he saw for the last time that day. Tim says he know why he was spared: to tell their stories, to be the voice that his friends don’t have. He says, “The greatest love is giving your life for someone you didn’t know”.
On September 11th, Tim was a supervisor for Mayor Rudolph Giuliani’s Office Of Emergency Management. The department was comprised of top NYC firefighters and police officers, along with representatives from The NYC Health Department and the NYC Department of Environmental office. Just 5 years old, the department was tasked with organizing an efficient city response to emergencies. Never could anyone in the department ever predict their impeccable training would be a lifesaver, not once, but twice in a single day in a twin attack.
Just before 9 A.M., Tim Brown was going through his early morning routine at 7 World Trade Center, reading all the New York City newspapers as he ate his cheerios in the cafeteria. Suddenly, the power went out. After 5 seconds, it returned. Brown knew the emergency generator kicked in. Across the room, those sitting by the window saw something hit #1 World Trade Center, the North Tower. Tim Brown’s training kicked in. His 9/11 story is unimaginable, at one point holding on to a column, surviving the dust cloud of the collapsed South Tower that was so strong, it lifted his legs into the air.

I was at work (dialysis), just finished getting 1st shift on. Turned on the tv for our patients, and withnessed the first plane. I woke up two gentlemen patients to watch. I honestly thought "drunk pilot." Then witnessed all the rest. I still 22 years later remember vividly all of it. I read and watch EVERYTHING! My heart breaks to know what all those people went through. Even 22 years later. Tim Brown, Pasqual and Welles are the stories that have stayed in my memories. Bless you all!

I was on 74th floor tower 2 when the second plane hit. Finally got out very late. This is an incredible account, so real and close to my experience. I think I saw both Chief Burns at the bottom of B in tower 2. Bigger than life! And possibly Calvin in the street level lobby. Talked with Fire Marshall Ronald Bucca on 60. Yes Tim, each responder KNEW it. It was in there in there eyes and voice. So appreciate this account. You were one of the very best that day and a very good person. Thank you!!!

I'm atheist but I pray to whatever gods out there might be listening that your uncle will someday be able to share his story. I was only a measly freshman in high school at the time and while I can't speak for you, everybody alive in our country 20 years ago was affected by this. My parents saw JFK's assassination "live" and remember their stories. We all experienced this in such a way that every story is sacred. Every one of our individual experiences with this has shaped the past 20 years of American history that I hope will never be repeated. Your uncle has every right to keep those experiences to himself, his story deserves to be heard. So much changed that day that every voice silenced needs to be heard and preserved in the annals of time so that we may never have to experience it ever again.

His friend was a paramedic as well so all he did was save people...he is literally an angel on earth. I love the greeting Tim and his friend shared every time they saw each other. It bought tears to my eyes and made me laugh at the same time. I have been absolutely fascinated by 9/11..Its is the ultimate study of the human condition on so many levels..I have seen pretty much every documentary every made and watch countless interviews. Partly because my Mom was working in the city blocks away and she would take the path to WTC and arrive 7:30am. The feel of not knowing and then the relief when she finally got through to call with her beautiful calming voice to say she was ok was unforgettable. This man I think so far is the most detailed story teller out of any of the victims that said maybe 1 minute of story thanks to the media shortening it. There need to be more of these, long detailed stories. Also we need to hear what people literally went through with the payouts, day by day phone calls and in-person, therapy of any sort done. Any and all information helps us all more understand what happened that day and following months and years.

@Aaron Lewis good BBQ! Hey Aaron, seriously, Springfield and surrounding towns don’t have much to be proud of these days. You, however, have made a lot of my friends feel so proud by using your gift to tell the world how true Americans feel that I really feel indebted to you. Thank you so very much for that.

This guy is everything a man should be. The way he remembers his fellow brothers and reminds everyone who and what they are and were. On top of the fact that he handled the division that came about after that awful day with fortitude and logic. He is a hero and the true essence of what it means to be a New Yorker from New York. The title hero almost doesn't even cut it. I hope he knows how much he's appreciated and the families of his fallen friends are fortunate to have him here. Reminding and sharing what we all must and will not ever forget. Thank you, Mr. Brown.
